Roosterteeeth's newest RWBY spin off is less than amazing. Each episodes is uniquely flawed, so I guess there's only one way to take a good look at how each episode succeeds and fails as an adaptation, and as a story! Let's dive into the incredibly blandly animated world of "Fairy Tales!"

The idea of Salem telling one of these fairy tales as a way to get people to stop bothering her is amusing to me. like i just imagine a young Ruby randomly stumbling across her in the woods, and so she tells her the story and sends her back like some cranky grandmother scolding a naughty child.

Isn't this the point of fairy tales. In our world myths/fairy tales are usually either about the world and how it came to be or cautionary(don't know if this is how you spell this) tales. The grimm child is a good representation of that. The chill (grimm in the story) isn't as powerfull in the real world as it is in the story, it is meant to warn and scare kids. Qrow said that diffirent religions and beliefs exist so it isn't that weird that some people believe this is how faunus came into existance and that they weren't made by Salem or the brothers Grimm.

@@jonsku6662 It’d be awesome if she got a chance to narrate moments in her own past as the beginning to Vol 9. So we can FINALLY see how she met everyone, how she perceives her curse, her feelings for Ozma and about the Gods, and any events leading up to now. Seeing as they call her the witch and speak as if everything is all her fault, we deserve her perspective. And then at the end of the episode *cough*, which should be like 40 minutes, we either see her messing with the relics, speaking to Ambrosious and Jinn (cause we’ve never seen two activated at the same time) while they stare uncooperatively, or at home smiling at the fact she’s almost at the end before locking the relics away in her own special vault.

I knew as soon as I saw the one involving the 'creation' of the Faunus, that it would be absolutely terrible. As mythical origin stories go, it's incredibly unimaginative to have your animalistic half-human minority turn out to be... people that a random god decided to merge with sentient animals to teach them a lesson about not being that different from each other? Not only that, but that that the addition of vague animal bits like horns and tails suddenly turns their own communities against them? I think the two most likely ones are going to be the Grimm Child or the Warrior in the Woods, and that does not excite me. Mostly cause those two stories are gonna pound me over the head with a sledgehammer with its subtlety and execution in the show. Also, the fact that Jaunes emblem can be found in the girl in the tower makes me angry. This dude is getting more importance because you know for a fact that they are going to make him even more important in the next few volumes. Salem is gonna see him and have a flashback to one of her children and that’s gonna be how they reveal that Salem and Jaune are related. I hope that doesn’t happen, but honestly, it probably will. Man, doesn't it sucks when a student mentor relationship turns into a shoehorned romance out of nowhere... well, anyhow. Salem being 16, which implies she shouldn't look much older than our main girls right now is weird, like how Cinder is supposed to be 10 years old when she meets Rhodes, but looks 14, and years later into her training, she looks the same. That said, it could've been interesting if she was indeed much younger, not only because it would bring home the idea that she's immature and doesn't understand the natural order of the world. Maybe instead of being Ozma's lover, she could've been his daughter, so his failure in raising her is reflected in the way he treats his students. She would see the Grimm more like toys or pets and care more about them than the people around her, and it bring home the show's fairy tale themes since Ozpin proliferated these stories around the world, to teach people the lessons she never learned.

Personally, what they should have done with the *"Indecisive King"* story at least in my opinion. In his story it should have ended with the Kings vision of the future coming true years later. As during the years leading up too his Kingdoms inevitable destructions he never prepared for what is to happen. Essentially seen's this storyline involves the Relic of Choice so essentially choices matter. The Widow decision to tell the King to live in the present and not worry about the future, this makes the King to have the decision to Marry the woman and neglect *"His future"* leading to his Kingdom not being prepared for a Grimm invasion and the death of all his subjects and his Queen. The King being the only survivor wanting answers to why all of this have come to pass puts on the Crown, ones again too see far into the future an find a way to fix this problem. But this time the King loses his mind as seeing far into the future his mind could not take it and he devolved into the state we see him at the start of the story. An The Mysterious Man who gave the King the Crown in the first place returns and reclaims the Crown from the now vegetative king who is forever lost in madness and eternal grief. I think in my opinion at least this story could work this way.

I really like the narrative choice of the narrator and listener, and using it once for only tai with ruby and yang misses out on the chance to use other canonical characters to literally share these fairytales with each other, and further flesh out the world building! like, if the story of the shallow sea was between blake and her parents, it better establishes that this is a tale circulated by faunus about themselves, or like the story of the girl in the tower being winter trying to help weiss fall asleep after a nightmare of feeling trapped- creating parallels with the characters we already know by showing what fairytales they grew up on! especially since in like volume 2 ruby literally tells professor oobleck that she was inspired by those same fairytales of hunters and huntresses to be one herself. for a show and world that is supposedly very culturally rich with fairytales and stories, we barely see how our cast of characters are inspired by or cautioned by them.

Basically, it's a catalogue of folktale types used in folklore studies about what do fairytales around the world have in common. An example would be the children and the witch (Hansel and Gretel fit into this) or unnatural love (where donkey skin fits in). It would be really cool to see the remnant fairytales follow a tale type and the motifs and archetypes of said tale type.

Actually, "The Warrior in the Woods" has a different appearance in the text of the story compared to the art. In the text she's described as a tall, fair woman with messy black hair flecked with white. She also has a completely different outfit in the text compared to the art. About the only thing the art has in common with the text is that she uses a billhook. Her appearance in the text isn't like what it is in the show, mind you, but her appearance in the show is closer to what it is in the text. The romance angle is also there from the start in the text. It's a very "love at first sight" sort of thing.

Honestly? After watching this, the one story that intrigues me the most is "The Grimm Child". Like, none of it matters because the start is really bad. I haven't read the original, but a better way to start would be having Poppy see nothingin the forest, send Oak in, wait until afternoon, then find him cold and asleep. Having Oak look like a literal demon doesn't make sense. As someone with a brother, if I saw him with blacked-out eyes and red cracks I'd ditch. But also, if I saw him with closed eyes and lying still, I'd assume he's asleep or dead, using the coldness of the skin to determine. Poppy's probably 9 or something, so we can assume she'd bring her brother home, hoping he's just asleep. Boom, instant setup. Also can be used for extra humanisation as Poppy realised Oak might be dead judging by parental reactions. Also, that story feels like one that could benefit from being told by Tai to a young Ruby and Yang. Have Ruby be scared at the end, before Tai assures her that the Chill are extinct. (Oh, and have the Chill actually be extinct. This is supplemental material, and I don't trust RT enough to have the Chill come into the show and explain them in the show.)

Another issue with the execution of this concept is how the stories don't seem to be connected with each other. If the Indecisive King was Salem's father who locked her in the tower because of what he envisioned, and the Grimm Child was the beginning of Salem's rise to power after Ozma died, I think it would have been more interesting and more like a glimpse in how people see the historical events as fiction, but we the audience slowly learn that these actually happened because of what we were shown in the original series

Yeah, 'The Grimm Child' was the worst one for me, specifically because it does a terrible job of explaining things. To be fair, when there's a single character, then it's much easier to explain things in a book, because it can show what the character's thinking. But you can't do that with tv/film. But even so, there was just no attempt even. I think they would've been able to do it much better if they'd have just slowed things down a little, it felt very rushed. Also in the book, Oak doesn't look so obviously possessed right from the start, he just looks very pale and feverish. He only got the red lines on his arms later on. So it makes more sense why Poppy doesn't realise that something is seriously wrong, and thought he just caught a chill.

The thing with The Grimm Child is that, in the book, it's not that Ozpin CHANGED the story to be more in-line with Salem, but that this was the altered, vastly more popular telling of the story. Kind of like how the Disney versions of certain fairytales will by and large become the most recognized ones. The Grimm Child story we hear, as Oz explains, was over time merged with elements of another story about a white witch in the woods (ie, Salem) which, bears several other similarities to Grimm Child. It’s this cross-bleed and mixing of elements from the two that led to people telling it with the inclusion of the physical, visual elements of the Chill’s possession (pale skin, empty eyes, varicose veins etc.); it’s implied heavily that in the original telling there was no visual way of knowing who was possessed until they dropped dead. Ozpin notes that the reason so many elements of the original telling of Grimm Child were changed because people wanted to tell the story with an easy way of identifying the Chill, and in doing do dismissed the point that evil can hide behind any face. It tells us that indeed, human nature is to believe that we’ll be able to identify evil; that it’s plain and clear, even though in the original tale Poppy had no way of knowing that what she was bringing home wasn’t her brother anymore. The short does not acknowledge this at all, so the actually INTERESTING part of Grimm Child and what it told us about the people of Remnant, was completely lost in translation.

I personally did like the shorts, (especially with its backgrounds, music, and the designs of some of the characters like baby Ruby and The Animal God) but I agree with you on the art style being super disconnected from the show itself. Also the weird cross-fade thing for EVERY action was a bad choice and really bogged down the pacing. I also love your suggestion of using different characters to tell the different fairytales; it would be really nice and a way to breathe new life into the supplemental material without it ALWAYS being Ozpin who’s narrating. Great video as always!

I think one of the most disappointing parts of this collection is one story they decided not to adapt. Now I know that there is no way that they can or should adapt every fairytale in the book, but there is one in particular I would have really liked to see them do. Not only is it one of the more interesting stories in the book, but it is a great parallel to The Girl in the Tower that says a lot about Ozma. The Infinite Man To quickly summarize, Ozma's reincarnation goes to a town and ends up gaining a group of followers due to his magic powers and his ability to reincarnate. He warns his followers not to put their faith in him because he was "just a man, and not even a very good one." This advice is ignored though and one day an army ends up attacking Ozma and his followers and kill Ozma in the struggle. By the time he revives and gets back to his group he finds out that the place was destroyed and all but one of his followers were killed. The one left (who Ozma doesn't reveal his identity to) says that she was left here as a message and a warning of "placing all their hopes into one man, not even a very good man." I love this story and how it characterizes Ozma just like how The Girl in the Tower characterizes Salem. While The Girl in the Tower portrays Salem and Ozma as the heros, The Infinite Man portrays Ozma as a morally grey and often foolish person that makes mistakes just like everyone else. Not only that but the message of not putting your blind faith into someone because we are not perfect is a good message that fits in with the other stories of this book. Would it have been a good adaptation? Honestly who knows? Does it matter in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. But I still feel a bit disappointed.

I dropped the Fairy Tales on the Shallow Sea episode, to me even when the morals were 'good' they were presented in such a basic way that if someone just walked up to me saying 'hey, stay together to fight monsters! its better that way!' would have the same emotional impact. I came back to watch the Girl in the Tower because someone said it was good, but idk, even the king's motivation felt stupid. His wife died in *childbirth* so he didn't want Salem to leave to protect her from the world? Wtf? It wasn't something outside in the world that killed his wife, that would make a lot more sense if she had died to a Grimm outside or to a bandit or anything else, not by giving him a child.

I am not however, a fan of this version. Also since Jaune's symbol showed up in Salem's tower you know for certain that hes gonna turn out to be a descendant of Salem or something, possibly of a survivor of Salem's children with Oz, and will probably pull magic out of his ass or start a Salem redemption arc or some bs in V9. I'm almost surprised they didn't go ahead and have Jaune's mother or one of his sisters tell him the story just to really bash it into everyone's skulls that Jaune is important and special. I'm really hoping that if they continue this then they will put in more effort for the other stories. But its rt so oh well I guess

I don't think these 'fairy tales' might have had the effect on the fandom CRWBY thought it should in terms of some of the in-show narratives. The girl in the tower certainly did not instill in me any sympathy for Salem situation if that was what was intended. Exactly opposite in my view. She was always manipulative. Her father wasn't really evil. Just over protective. She wanted someone to kill her father. The indecisive king was pretty much an Ironwood story. And it basically showed if Ironwood was shown more compassion and understanding, it's possible he would not have went down the dark path he did. Instead he got exactly the opposite from the 'heroes'. I have a feeling that these takes on some of the tales were not intended or expected by CRWBY. Could be wrong of course.

To me the king story seems like a way to blame ironwood more. "You should have loved poor people more. If you had just forgotten about war and trusted in love then you would still be a hero. The king version of you learned his lesson, why couldn't you? Didn't you learn this story?"
@DocMicrowave
@DocMicrowave 2 жыл бұрын
Ironwood did show much "Love" to RWBY and company. He helped them. Disregarded any past transgressions, Gave them a place to stay, support systems, equipment, training, included them in his inner circle planning (which they actually approved.) He listened to and took their counsel. Even acted on it. Seemingly implicitly trusting them. What he got in return was disdain, betrayal, back stabbing, insubordination, lies. The young faunus in the fairy tale did none of that. Despite the king seemingly on the edge of falling off, she showed him compassion and understanding. And he reciprocated by coming back to his senses. (Do you actually think that King wouldn't have sunken to a similarly dark place if it wasn't for an understanding and supportive hand up?) Ironwood was on the edge, trying to do the best he could to protect his kingdom and now the world. Trying to make the best decisions as a military man given the information he had and facts he was denied. Especially without Oz's guidance. He was looking at the bigger picture. He was no where near perfect. But all he needed was some trust and guidance. And no, he was never portrayed as racist to the faunus as some hold. There was even a faunus on his most trusted elite guard. RWBY, instead of pouring water on that smoldering flame, poured gasoline instead. Then turned around surprised when he gets pushed over that edge by people he implicitly trusted. The narrative pushed was that he was always a bad guy, good thing they didn't trust him from the start. As if that justified anything. As you can see. I did learn from this story. Ironwood's turn to the dark side was very artificial and forced. He was written into a box with no way out because that's what the plot called for. A new big bad so they can sideline Salem. (Jen Taylor must be quite expensive to contract for VA..) He had it far worse than this king. But there are enough similarities to see that RWBY could/should have acted differently with Ironwood. The outcome could have been far better than it is now. Mantle and Atlas destroyed. Probably hundreds dead, many many more displaced into hostile lands, and both relics in Salem's hands. Everything Ironwood was trying to prevent. It's funny, in the fairy tale the King is (somehow) deceived by a very shady looking character. For someone depicted as so wise, he sure wasn't in that situation. But he was able to be salvaged. In Ironwood case, he was deceived by people he most trusted. Sank into utter darkness as a cartoon villain destined to die a horrible death. Totally irredeemable. If Ironwood was truly evil from the get go (as some in the fandom claim he was from V2) He would have NEVER have trusted RWBY. Would have thrown them in a jail for putting Argus in danger, destroying government property, stealing an Airship, Violating Atlas airspace during a time of high alert, etc. etc. Or just had them executed on the streets when caught, Councilman Sleet style, as probable enemy agents sneaking into the City. V8 was a continuation of his downward slide. Nothing could be done about that now. The deed was done. There was no turning back for him except to get worse. Now newly justified by CRWBY revealing his semblance after-the-fact in a pod cast. (Not in-show.) We obviously see it in different ways, which is fine.

Granted no one offered Ironwood love, unlike the faunus chick to the king.

@@triggerfairy4070 Exactly. King apparently was starting to head down the same hole Ironwood did if it wasn't for the faunus chick and her approach to the situation. If only Ironwood got the same treatment. But the girls had to be the ones to shine as matrons of good and righteousness. Not Ironwood.

You know kings and queens answere questions and approving weddings/new kids/housing/new development of farmers. Think of it as the people are workers, the leader is a boss, the kingdom is a company.

I've actually been thinking about something after watching this again, the crown in the fairy tale is represented as knowledge. But isn't the lamp the relic of knowledge and the crown the relic of choice? I don't feel like this actually explained what the crown is supposed to do and part of me thinks they forgot that the crown was choice and not knowledge. Does the crown glimpse into the future as like, a warning for what choices need to be made or avoided? I have no idea. If I'm thinking about it wrong can someone explain it to me because I'm really confused now XD
