This is a minor nitpick but I hated how they didn't let Weiss's hair down when they showed everyone getting ready in the morning and stuff. She looked ridiculous rolling out of bed with her hair up and tiara in. Remember in vol 1 and we had actual pajamas and she let down her hair bc obviously she wouldn't wear it up to sleep? Bring that back!!

The change to Weiss's design just solidifes they never want Weiss to fight again. She will NEVER be her ballerina/rapier slasher old self who uses every glyph under the book to fight. No, now she will wear BOXY ugly outfits so they can keep her stationary and use her night and ice spears infights instead.

Step B. But with a long dress and a bunch of details it’s hard for the animators to make Weiss move the way she used to. Even Month said he wished he could make longer skirts, but they are harder to animate. Which is why I find it odd that acrobatic fighters like Weiss, Blake, and Neo would wear such long clothing

Every reactor I watched also commented on how Weiss slept with her braid the early episodes. Take what I say with a grain of salt because I don't know much about how RT hires their staff or what their work history are. But as someone who use to go to school for video game art I think the problem with the designs might have to do with if RT are hiring artist who have skills for designing for a 3D environment. Drawing for a pretty image is way different then drawing for a 3D model. What looks good on 2D paper can translate poorly on a 3D model. And I think that's what happening. The werid amount of belts and zippers, the werid way some of clothes are cut ect. may be compensation. While simple designs are nice they can be borning for modelers to make. And difficult for animators to animate. Like how you said, Monty use to have a hand in the dsign process so he could spot problems early on. I agree with the idea that they may need to get a more firm art director, but they may also need to get someone who understand the process from the 2D stage all the way down to the final 3D render. And who can nip problems early in the 2D stage before they reach the final product. But that's just my two cents. Like I said I don't go digging too deep into this stuff. Just an observation.

I think these podcasts (especially this one) would be even better if there was a little bit of editing. Adding more into the conversations, I think the concept artists design team RWBY in pairs then as a group. Ruby and Weiss often of times share elements of each other designs especially in Volume 4( Ruby's Blouse and Weiss' Shroug, their skirts, boob windows, leggings, etc.) and are often designed to feel like their version of Final Fantasy characters or even traditional fantasy( Maybe because Ruby wanting to become a huntress from stories and fairytales and Weiss wanting to follow in her grandfather's footsteps). Meanwhile, Blake and Yang are almost given very similar modern outfits(They literally have the same coat-tails). It kinda feels like because Yang and Blake don't have goals anymore that they just become more modern over the series.

FUN FACT: If you rewatch Volume 6 Episode 13, Cinder's black outfit has bright red on the underside of the shoes, so Twiins, it does have red on it, but you would literally never know unless you looked for it. That is the only splash of colour on her outside of the feather charm and the stupid, faded gold accents.

I will say about Ren though, his braid is practical for fighting. His pants are fine but above his waist it’s so crowded and the lines are annoying. Plus, those lines are 90 degrees while he’s so far had 45 degrees, they could’ve changed the lines to make it less crowded up there. I wish the brown and the bright pink were scattered a bit around his shoulders so that it would be more symmetrical.

What do you three think the core design of each character should be based around? Color? Semblance? Weapon? Folklore allusion? What is the most central aspect each design should focus on, or should there even be one? I would think a show with an acronym of colors for its title should centralize color, but the longer you go on that could feel limiting.

I think I remember hearing that a large chunk of the animation of the Yang & Blake vs Adam fight where he dies was supposed to be used back in the episode where Yang gets disarmed in what we got. Like, that was supposed to be a fight scene, and not Yang charging in like and idiot and getting her arm chopped off.

神影Kamikage Yes a couple of chunks of Adam vs Yang in V6 were assets that Monty had made for their fight in V3 but they decided not to have them fight. Which I think in my opinion worked better

On the topic of outfits for each region, I feel would be nice if we got more than one volume to actually explore everything more. Maybe have something like: Vol 1-3 Vale/Beacon Vol 4-6 Mistral/Haven Vol 7-9 Atlas/Mantle Vol 10-12 Vacuo Then maybe one or two volumes back in Vale to see any and all changes, as well as maybe using the first of the volume sets possibly getting to each place. This way we get more invested and familiar with each kingdom and it may help the creators get a more solid idea of how each place would be. But that's just me.

Hmm, I think I'm in the minority, but I kind of like Team CRDL's design because it's easy to imagine a backstory to explain the team dynamic. My headcanon is that Cardin, Dove, and Lark were friends at a previous academy, and they picked up Russel at initiation. Jaune sits between Russel and Cardin when the five of them are looking at their classmates in Forever Fall. I'd also like to see how Velvet and Team NDGO, who are fan designed, compare to other characters from volume 1-3.

I actually think weisss vol 4 design is ok. She is at home and forbidden to leave so I think the dark cold grays and the choking collar works thematically with her being trapped. But it should have definitely changed when she was leaving. Like she planned and obviously wanted to leave so she should have definitely changed for something more practical

The reason why Weiss' V4-6 outfit is a really weird color is because it's supposed to be a thick mesh kind of thing that you can see through a little, but of course the engine can't handle that

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but I'm pretty sure the huntsman and huntresses can use their aura to protect themselves from extreme weather. And if that's true, coverings for bare skin wouldn't be necessary. And I have to point out, your suggestion on how to make Hazel look more interesting basically turns him into Bane (from Batman) minus the mask.

A little late to the party but I always thought that the military uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars were pretty stylish and would have loved to see a character based off of one of those. Might be inspired by Epic History TV's series of videos on the Napoleonic Wars or reading the Richard Sharpe books, a historical fiction series set during said time period. What are your thoughts?

I always thought that RT were going into popular characters designs, so this all mess were created to Ruby's outfit...well, y'know, besides being goth-like and lolli.

What bothered me about Nora's volume 4-6 outfit was that her design didn't feel fully completed, I wish their was more going on with her legs to make her movements cooler while fighting. Nora's volume 7 outfit was my favorite because CRWBY really took into account her fighting style and brought more attention to her shoulders and thighs with navy blue. I also loved how her overcoat matched the color of her eyes and they extra metallic embellishments on her design. Volume 1-3 had my least favorite outfit for her solely because I didn't like how the black looked on her for some reason, miss her volume 1 bow thogh. It was adorable!

Ruby's V4 and V2 "Slayer" outfits could've been interchanged (and the V4 shirt should've been made gray) so the progression would've been better Anyway, the V2 alt outfits are my faves for team RWBY, V4-6 for Nora, V7 for Jaune and V1-3 for Ren
