The Geist Grimm can possess objects to fight but a fun fact about them is the giant knight Weiss fought in her trailer was a Geist possessing a giant suit of armor that her dad Jacques made her fight under the deal if she won she goes to Beacon and if not Atlas academy.

To add on the Grist is called the Arma Gigas when possessing the Knight and Petra Gigas when possessing boulders.

I think what's more interesting is the ice queendom anime canonizes that bit from the manga explaining the Arma gigas but also canonizes the strategy of lowering aura in a fight to risk taking a hit but ensure you still have reserve for fighting with a power or enhanced stats a bit longer. Also explains why Weiss did it cause her aura is pretty crap and is priorly explain theory crafted by winter that it can only hold up against at least two attacks full force like that.

Here's a sad little detail you can try keep an eye out for. Going forward, Whenever team JN-R is on screen, even if Ruby is there. There's always an empty spot of Pyrrha. 😭 17:31 would be the clearest example in this episode, between Nora and Ren.

1:20 if you listen closely you can hear a instrumental version of the song Lusus Naturae playing. Until this point, the song was only used in the game RWBY: Grimm Eclipse. It was then added to vol 4 soundtrack. 18:47 Mirror Mirror part 2 playing in the background 🙂. Also, Ren and Nora’s little debate on their team name mirrors the debate the fans had before the vol was released. Right down the names 🙂. I know people like to rag on Jaune, but I personally thought it was neat seeing how far he’s come(or will go I suppose).

Yeah Tyrian is basically what you'd get of the Joker actually served someone. And some of the episodes from Vol 4 and 5 don't seem to match up Chronologically to each other when they shift focus as well as being like 3-6 months after the Fall of Beacon. So there will be moments of "That seems to happen too soon after This".

I'm pretty sure they all knew the face was the geists weakspot. The problem was it kept protecting it and they weren't really getting through. They could kill its limbs and the geist was more than willing to sacrifice said limbs to protect itself, but then it would just grab something else to replace them. Jaune's strategy of "just hit it harder" actually makes the most sense then, because hitting it hard enough to break multiple limbs at once removes the bits that are getting in the way and protecting its vital spot, and if it tries to go for more it's going to be vulnerable. As it was, it instead abandoned its core and tried to flee, letting Ruby snipe it down. So, the strat worked. Funnily enough this is the same kind of grimm that Wiess fought in her first trailer, and notice how she took it down back then too; she paralyzed all its limbs and then hit really hard in the core whilst moving really fast, exactly how RNJR dealt with this one.

The Grimm possessing the stones and tree was called a Geist, but a Geist actually becomes classified as a Gigas once it gains some armor. When Geists possess natural materials they seem to become Petra Gigas, but when they possess a suit of armor like the one Weiss actually fought in her season 1 trailer, they become Arma Gigas. I'm excited for you to find out more about our little unnamed (currently) friend because he has a very interesting story. And finding out what happened to Ozpin will be just as exciting to see your reaction to.

It's not juat Jaune, I think this volume does a very good job allowing all of the characters to process what happened in the last one in a believable way. Which must have been hard to do, for a show that started as such a light-hearted and goofy way.

Jaune was clear, though; he said it was only protecting the face, then gave them specific routes of attack. His plan was plenty detailed enough for them, and it was only Ren's weapon that wasn't doing anything to the rock. Nora and Ruby could hit hard enough to break the limbs, which is why Jaune got them to do the combo attack at the end there ("Ready to try out the new upgrade?" to Nora, talking about the electrified hammer head). They played it off for a bit of a laugh with how simple it seemed, but Jaune's always been a good strategist. Even back when they fought the Death Stalker (the scorpion Grimm) in Volume 1, he's the one who called all their shots.

I like the intro fight to this volume. They are still students, so I give Jaune a little leeway. It's also our first encounter with this kind of grimm. The timeline between characters in different places doesn't always line up, but it isn't a huge deal. The writers didn't want to have to be strict with the timeline when our team is scattered across the world.

So, I will preface this with the fact that V4 is my least favorite volume of RWBY. There’s just a lot of specific things that don’t particularly work for me. However, there are a lot of good things which I’ll talk about as we go, I’m sure. For now, episode 1. We’ve got a whole new group of characters, which for brevity I’ll call Team WTCH (witch). Watts, Tyrian, Cinder, and Hazel under Salem. They’re fun. Particularly love the detail that Watts doesn’t sit until Salem does. Such arrogance. Speaking of our wicked witch, I love that there’s an instrumental of Divide as she makes her entrance. Best song from V3. Unknown boy is unknown. Loving the new designs for RNJR. Particularly Ren’s. But I also think Nora’s is really cute. Love a good bomber jacket. And another musical cue from V3 with Mirror Mirror part 2 playing when we see Weiss. As I mentioned last reaction, they switched from Poser to Maya between volumes and while that was indeed the right call, it does mean that they had to build everything from scratch, and thus there are some growing pains. The color saturation is a little off, specifically on the models, and there’s a lot of floaty moments in the combat. Minor issues for sure but something I noticed. See you next time.

Not sitting until a superior does is actually a sign of respect in most European cultures (Watts seems to be British-equivalent). The Queen/King is always the first to sit at any gathering, and it's the reason military protocol is for everybody to stand and come to attention when an officer enters the room. Watts remaining standing until Salem sits I actually take as the opposite of arrogance; it's a sign of his respect and deference to her. EDIT: I had forgotten the part where she does actually gesture for them to sit, so I definitely see where you're coming from. Old British etiquette is to stand while speaking to a superior, so I still think he's showing respect because he's replying to her question, but it is a bit more ambiguous.

If you take the first letter of each word from the second to last line from the new intro "Move onward, not there yet" you get Monty. The composer actually held a contest to see who would catch it first and as a reward the winner got a CD of the complete Volume 4 soundtrack. Also the very beginning where we see the 4 colors going on the map show's where each of the 4 RWBY girls are.

The full name of the butler that was talking to Weiss is named Klein Seiban. Which translates to "Small Seven" in german, keeping up with the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs only in this case he has seven different personalities.

Fun Facts Fact 1: As with previous Volume premieres, when the episode was released at the scheduled time of October 22nd at 10:00am CST, the volume of users attempting to access the Rooster Teeth website was so large that it was inaccessible for some time. Director of Technology at Rooster Teeth, Adam Baird, even received calls incorrectly informing him that the website was under attack by DDoS. A delay in export also meant the episode also had to be re-uploaded, compounding the problem. It was announced that the episode release would be delayed to 3:00pm CST. In lieu of the episode, the Volume 4 Opening was released to the public. The problem was fixed sooner than anticipated and the episode released for Rooster Teeth First members at approximately 1:00pm CST. Fact 2: The title of the episode, "The Next Step", is a reference to a similarly-titled episode in Volume 1, "The First Step". This pattern of nods to titles from The Beacon Arc continues in Volume 5. This is the season they retired the old animation software and graduated to MAYA. The shaders in MAYA aren’t as resource intensive as they were in Poser so the visuals really pop for the environment. They do however mute the colors in general

A note of defense for Jaune's strategy: Yes, you need to get the head to take down the geist. However, it constantly protects it with "his limbs" which he can easily "reattach" so to speak. So it is actually quicker to take them all out at once if possible - which they did - and then you have a clean shot to the actual target. He just... needs to learn to communicate better in battle... which, by the way, we also saw during the tournament so it's a work in progress for him. 🤷‍♀

Jaune is really a good strategist "We hit it harder" is actually a good plan, the grimm doesnt protect its limbs, but its face (not an eye, it was not exactly a ciclops, but more like a phantom), so, if they destroys the limbs from one hardest hit, the grimm doesnt have how to protect its face, that's why it tried to escape when team RNJR destroyed its arms, Jaune was absolutley right.

New characters means new allusions. So Watts is biased from John Watson from Sherlock Holmes. Hazel is Hansel from Hansel and Gretel. Tyrian is from the scorpion and the frog on top of being what you get if The Joker from Batman and Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter somehow meet and conceive a kid. And finally Adorable Farm Kid, which I'll save for later. I doubt you'd believe me anyway. Also fun fact! The debate Nora and Ren had at the beginning of the episode about team names was actually one us fans had during the wait between volumes.

I'm not sure but it's possible they needed to get the geist out of the rock and reveal it's whole body to be able to actually kill it so Jaune may have been trying to figure out how to draw it out. Also to be fair the other three didn't even figure that out so...

To be fair to Jaune's strategy your right he didn't get it across well at first. But his plan was to knock t9 limbs free to attack the face as it defends its face when attacked. The only reason Ren hit it was because it was distracted with Jaune.

Just a heads up Volume 4 is very slow with not that many fight scenes in it and due to that it’s one of the less appropriated volumes. However it has some great character development and interactions and I look forward to you watching it

HAHAHA Yeah, I too found the Geist fight frustrating for how dumbly they write RNJR. EXACTLY. Have you not played video games??? Why do you think electricity will work on stone?? What ELSE is there to attack that looks remotely vulnerable, if not the big white face with the single glowing red eye??? A friend of mine has bitterly argued with me about this. His contention is that white bony spots on Grimm are usually armor... but I'd STILL attack that and try to shoot it in the eye before I went unga-bunga-SMASH and literally tried to attack my enemy at its strongest points. Regardless... Volume 4 is an awkward period for RWBY. Not bad, but OFF in a number of ways, largely as a result of them tailoring a whole new production pipeline with Autodesk Maya as their newly adopted 3d package. Of course, I can't excuse lines that are written like they'll have future significance, but then never actually do. I can tell you after nine seasons, that "It is BECAUSE of the Maiden's power" is a line without meaning, because we never discover that Silver Eyes have any adverse effect on Maidens. We DO find out something about Cinder AFTER all of this, but it's nothing to do with Maiden powers. Oh... and given the nature of Cinder's damage, and the fact that we missed nothing after Ruby's eye flashbanged Cinder, I have NO idea how she lost an eye, or caused the rest of the damage we haven't seen yet. Anyway, enjoy Volume 4 while you can... Volume 5 will follow, and then NOBODY is going to have any fun, because Volume 5 practically sunk the SERIES it did so much damage. Volume 6 is when things finally get back on track though. I promise it's worth it... but the wage of suffering is experience... ...And by god, you will gain EXPERIENCE...
