It's also interesting as it shows the mindset of a lifelong speedrunner. Very few people would even notice some missing background object, and of those that do almost none would give it a second thought. Goose clocks it immediately, figures out how to replicate it, and right away has concrete examples of where such a trick could be used to improve scores.

8:54 - As the N64 was pretty limited with how much data it could save, it's very likely that the photos are not stored as image files, but instead as just some game state data such as where the player is, the angle they are facing, time in stage, etc. Then when you go to develop those photos, they may re-render the scene from the point of view of that data to generate the image. At the point of re-loading to render again the tree may re-appear. If it was actually storing an image it wouldn't be possible for the tree to re-appear. Not sure exactly how the game handles it, but as a game programmer I think this is likely what is going on. All is not lost though because maybe it would be possible to take a picture with the tree and then have the tree disappear in the develop instead! Who knows
@wombatpandaa97749 ай бұрын
That's exactly what I was thinking. Probably some coordinates are saved to recreate the image on loading the album or when having Oak analyze photos. If this is the case, the glitch would probably have no use in getting higher scores, but if the objects' hitboxes are being culled along with their textures, that might be useful for manipulating Pokémon in different ways. Really makes you think.
@wfjhDUI9 ай бұрын
Yeah, definitely not image files, it's not like Pokemon Snap was using cutting edge AI image recognition over two decades ago. Also, that's a good point about objects potentially disappearing in the developed photos instead.
@Jeremo-FD9 ай бұрын
That makes the most sense to me. It would be saved like a replay from a fighting game. The only thing that really confuses me about how snap handles this is that the movement/position of some pokemon is dependent on your actions during the level. How does the game know if a picture of the surfboard is supposed to have Pikachu on it or not without saving that information specifically? Unless, somehow, the game is actually saving all your inputs from the level up to the point that the picture is taken and when you go to look at the photo in the album, the game just replays the whole level run off screen and stops itself at the moment the photo was taken.
@Wourghk9 ай бұрын
It makes sense to do it that way, because raster was not cheap to store back then. However, don't dismiss the glitch as something novel and ultimately useless, because it may be possible to use the album to force-load levels in a sequence that causes a memory leak or overflow depending on the game version. As it is, this glitch already results in props visually disappearing (though collision may still be present - doesn't seem this was tested). 2 things to consider: 1. If there's a sequence that would cause an object or even a pokemon to vanish during photo scoring, rather than on the course, that could lead to higher scores. 2. Even if photo scoring is bulletproof, if it's possible to make specific objects or pokemon vanish (collision and all) during a stage, then it may be possible to at least speed through the course faster without certain blocks momentarily preventing progress.
@CouchPotator9 ай бұрын
@@Jeremo-FD The "image" doesn't" need to save all the inputs from the level start. It needs to save the camera position, and the positions and states of all objects (pokemon and changeable terrain) that are visible in the frame. So the picture says there was a Pikachu on the surfboard, in the surfing state, at frame ## of it's animation.

When i was young, like 30 years younger, i played castle of illusion on the master system. I once experienced a glitch where the screen bugged and i could leave through the left side of the level select area. The whole area was glitched colours and textures but seemed solid. I only got a short distance before missing a jump and dying causing the game to crash/lock. I was never able to recreate it and have never seen it on anything to do with this game. To this day i think about it and would love to have another shot at seeing where it might lead or if it could make anything happen but i guess it is just a random chance bug that happened. Could have been a cartridge error, not being seated correct or being bumped, who knows. There are likely alot of old games with unknown bugs that people experienced rarely and have never been discovered in wider circles or speedrunning like many games that have accidental discoveries such as the metal gear solid glitch found by the woman playing that didnt know the game properly but it was recorded and turned out to be a new find.
@cliftonchurch60399 ай бұрын
If you ever get the chance to experiment without the tree again, try hitting it with a fruit or pester ball. I think the tree is there in terms of its hitbox, but the textures somehow didn't load (possibly due to the actions taken just before loading the level). This is why the tree "reappears" in pictures. If you follow the development of Dolphin, the Wii emulator, they had issues with this game because of how it takes its pictures. It saves a minimally processed picture then rebuilds the image at the grading screen. This means that any missing (and therefore invisible) textures when playing will properly load for the grading and get in the way. This is my best guess as someone who has no programming knowledge, but enjoys learning as much as possible. It might not be 100% right, but it's a train of thought to start on. Also, texting within the Virtual Console version on Dolphin is likely to give the best insight into what's happening, because if you capture all your inputs (as if you were recording a TAS) on a successful treeless attempt, people can then look through the memory during the error and identify the cause more easily.

I tried putting a bounty on it, but even then, people don't know the game enough to put in a solid effort. The best I can do is leave a video and description on SRC and hope some hero arrives long after me and carries the torch. So is true for many games of obscurity.

A fascinating discovery that sheds some insight on how taking a picture actually works. The game must use your position, angle, time, and variables like pokeflute, pokemon positions and conditions, etc, when generating photos to determine what the photo should be rather than actually storing a photo and analyzing it to come up with a score. Wonder if you could somehow figure out the scoring algorithm and brute force every combination of all of the variables it considers to come up with a theoretical max score of every picture and the precise conditions needed to meet it. Maybe that would defeat the fun.

One of my favourite speedgames is Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. I've done quite a few speedruns of the game, but there was one area where something weird just happened. Normally there is supposed to be a ~3 second long cutscene. In one speedrun, for some reason, it just didn't happen. The cutscene was gone. I was preparing myself for the cutscene, and it just didn't show up. Which saved me 3 seconds. I wasn't recording, I wanted to relive the experience of my first speedrun by just playing using the same glitches as back then and not bothering with recording and whatnot. Actually, another instance of something extremely rare that I've only ever gotten once, again in Dream Team. The first glitches start at exactly the 1 hour mark, and this glitch I got happened at 30 minutes, I was entering a cutscene like I always do and for some reason Mario couldn't reach his place. It just softlocked for some reason... Like, the cutscene started, Mario runs to the place he needs to go, he reaches the place and then literally just walked in place forever. Softlocked, never to truly reach his place. This one I did record (and by pure coincidence it was the only speedrun I ever decided to save my game prior to this point so it wasnt a full reset (I was doing a Hard Mode run)), and like. What the fuck lol. I can only assume this softlock happened due to maybe some floating point-precise positioning such that Mario just doesn't manage to get to where he needed to be, but I dunno. I've done this cutscene hundreds of times and it is the only time that it has ever happened to me. At least this one was recorded, though I'd have to do some digging to find it again and hope that the recording still exists. These are the only two rare glitches that I've only ever gotten once. Trying to think of other games but I'm not thinking of anything. I know for Sonic Adventure 2 (my other favourite speedgame) has a few extremely unlikely glitches, but for one of them (a random NaN glitch) we found out eventually that it's replicable by doing more or less the same actions. Another glitch that we have no idea how to replicate actually but has happened a few times is in Mad Space, where for some reason there's an extremely rare chance that upon loading up the stage you just teleport to a random location. We have like 2 or 3 videos on it (luckily everyone who got it was recording) but never was able to be replicated, only gotten by chance. The last one I'm thinking of that is a complete mystery to literally everyone even the debuggers is that normally on the Gamecube version if you finish a stage in a certain way, the game just softlocks. Once, just once, and never again, someone absolutely definitely finished the stage in such a way that it was supposed to softlock, and........... it did not softlock. I know some people would LOVE to know how that one happened, but nothing ever came out of it. Long comment but you did ask us about what we may have encountered. Cool video, was fun to watch

My two cents: Back in the day I used to mess around with Lunar Magic, the level editor for Mario World. I noticed if you place too many objects on a level they might sometimes appear sometimes not, depending on how many objects were already loaded on screen So maybe in this case, the game's engine can only load so many objects, once they're no longer needed they are purged from memory so new objects can be loaded, but what if, some bug made it so that the game forgets to purge said objects, so when you get to the point in a level when the object is supposed to load, it doesn't. My theory is that it depends not so much on what you did on the menu, but what happened during your previous run of a level. Without a memory dump and debugging tools we may never know sadly :(

Based on what we understand the photo storage mechanics are, it seems as though anything not loaded in the level would not matter at the time of photo development and rating. However, if we were somehow able to corrupt or overflow photo data at the time of rating a photo, you could theoretically add/remove/change the photo data to give you better scores. If SRM, ACE, and other data manipulation is possible in N64 games like we've seen, I wouldn't doubt the possibility!

This isn't actually all too surprising to me, since it's very similar to the sprite limit in the Mario Maker games, even though those are much more recent. Mario Maker level designers will fill up the 100 sprite limit to cause all sorts of wacky things to happen when the game doesn't allow new objects to load in unless you get rid of a sprite. My best guess as to what's going on here is that it's not the album, but rather something you're doing within the level. It's not impossible that it's the memory getting used for the album that's the culprit, but I think your best shot is to spam as many balls or fruits as you can just before the tree normally loads to see if you can pass the part where it pops in without it loading. You'd also have to test whether it actually increases the score and whether you can throw items through it if you take a picture where it would have obscured something, as texture and collision are two separate things, and I'm not sure how the game "reads" one object obscuring another. It is actually possible that this could lead to improvements even if the texture reappears in the final image! It all hinges on how the game handles the actual code, so you're either have to check that or playtest to see just what's what.
@wfjhDUI9 ай бұрын
It'd also be interesting to test if the glitched objects still interact with the physics system, e.g. do apples hit them, to see if the object is actually gone or just not being rendered.

Instead of storing a full image file or render of the scene, you're just storing the data for a "snapshot" of the game as it was and it's being rendered only when you view it. Takes up much less space than an already rendered scene. It's just like how games like smash or overwatch won't store video files for replays but instead store the inputs from all players to recreate the match. Mammoth flips upside-down. Bubsy jumps on the Mammoth. The crowd of Woolies boo and throw a banana peel into the ring. Bubsy has the Mammoth charge at the banana, making it slip and crash into one of the... Laser grid thingies. Repeat 3 times on the same piece of wall, and it breaks and the Mammoth slides into the pool of goop surrounding the arena. What happened this one fateful day? Mammoth is positioned right next to and kinda clipping into the wall of lasers. It enters a sliding state, and carries a second peel along with it, and slides to the center of the arena. The crowd boos- then all of a sudden, fight ends and you're booted to the level selection screen... The level was beaten. Even though none of the walls had broken and the Mammoth never touched the goop, and it wasn't even headed the right way... It was defeated! I wasn't recording at the time, unfortunately... But I know what I saw. Mammoth Skip is my white whale. It's out there... It's odd to me the tree would fail to spawn in. I've always assumed everything except the interactable parts were just part of the level geometry. I think glitch hunting in Pokemon Snap would be a lot harder than in games like Mario 64 and OoT since those require a lot of RNG manipulation and/or almost entirely rely on the player's movement. As Pokemon Snap is an on-rails game, it would be a lot harder to get anything out of place. You'd have to rely on the movement patterns of the pokemon which you have no direct control over. You can only lure them to specific locations with Poke Food or stop their movement with Pester Balls and the Poke Flute. Still, I suppose it's not out of the question that you might be able to throw Poke Food in such a way that a pokemon could clip through a wall and end up on the other side, which might allow for a few shots of additional pokemon. The most useful theoretical kinds of glitches for Snap that come to mind are perhaps a method to throw Poke Food and Pester Balls farther than normal, or to somehow speed up or slow down the Zero-One. Maybe there could be a way to induce lag that might affect the travel speed?

The fact that the photo isn't just ripped from the render buffer actually floors me, as other comments have suggested that the camera just checks for what is/isn't within culling range, thus the way that professor oak's lab / gallery works is separate from the gameplay logic renderer because static objects are always going to be visible from a frustum point or not. This actually explains how the POSE data factors into the score for the photo itself, if they have to encode the position and animation timer into things. If Jack & Beans did anything like how The Pokemon Channel was created, then even minor details in the game world would dynamically allocate as objects, and N64 object pools were probably very likely to overflow or lock contiguous regions of memory in the tables. Practically, I believe that if the gallery is dynamically loading in each level to generate a preview of the images in them, then the randomness observed is a consequence of exactly which photographs your gallery may contain, because it is creating those objects in a "preview space" so whichever ones are initialized is based entirely on your saved photo and data. ALTERNATIVELY Every photo in the game may record the IDs of objects in the stage which are static, and use that information to disable them if they were not visible in the original photo, therefore simply looking at one photo where specific things are not loaded, or with an ID from a different stage that overlaps with the object you're trying to disappear is off, it may cause this glitch. If I were to try and narrow this down, I would try with a save that has access to every level but has no photo data, and try to pin it down from there from between these two options.

Could be explained by a charged particle striking the N64 processor and flipping a machine code binary from 1 to 0. If you cannot reproduce it, I bet it's that! Which is fascinating to have documented via visual disturbance or anomaly in video game form. This is really a thing and used to cause havoc in airplanes when the GPS or navigation systems would glitch out. To correct this, there are multiple CPUs all processing simultaneously and cross referencing their data and only using the data that the majority of the CPUs are providing. So if one CPU is compromised say, the other two can be like "Hey he was wrong, let's not listen to him." It's a similar firewall or security tactic to Blockchain technology I think.

Great vid as always Goose. Your video on the perfect charizard made me get Pokemon Snap and start playing around with it. It's a nice chilled game but it's also really hard to get record scores.
@GamerFolklore9 ай бұрын
It's a comfy little game to attempt some scores. Much more chill than speedrunning Goldeneye or SM64.
@jazzabighits44739 ай бұрын
@@GamerFolklore Yeah, totally agree. A mistake in snap means a quick course reset and maybe 2 minutes to get back there and set the photo back up, a mistake in sm64 can be a 30+ minute run dead (my 16 star pb is currently at 33 mins i think haha). Keep up the great videos though, you legend.

The weirdest one off glitch I have encounter in Pokémon was in the original games. I had just beaten Brock and was making for Route 3, when I was stopped and a text box came up, saying Pikachu was evolving. I now had a Raichu, with only Thundershock and Growl. That was just the beginning though, because when I reached Celedon and wanted to evolve my Eevee in to Flareon, the Fire Stone I bought was available to use on the Raichu and it turned in to an Arcanine. It was likely a series of glitches that caused that to happen, but I figure something weird happened with Raichu's data, so I'm lumping it together. Raicanine made me one of the coolest kids in the Pokémon group, since everyone knew I was too poor to afford a Game Shark to cheat it. The other kids that had one wouldn't let me use their's either, because I refused to tell people how I got 6 Lv. 255 Mewtwo. Name yourself David and get to Cinnabar to be able to activate MissingNo. Then, search for a Mewtwo over Lv. 100. Feed that Rare Candies until you hit 255; anymore and you stack overflow it to Lv. 0 and it is then capped at 100.

So looking at the "what if" of discovered glitches which may not see the light of day, a slightly interesting one which is also probably known but i've not seen much about, In Deus Ex, there are various duplication glitches. However i found on my own is that you can play a "new game+" style mode of keeping your old gear by dying and then rather than quitting out, go and select new game. Boom, restart from the start with all your gear, it is necessary to have a few open spaces for this to work, as it will attempt to shove a medkit a pistol and a riot prod in your inventory on start so if you don't have these spots available it will delete everything most of the time, but this glitch theoretically just breaks the speedrun even more seeing you can get a augment which increases speed and then max that augment and this can used in the first minute of the speedrun as there is a convenient medbot near the start. Using this rather than doing a normal start would save over a minute, seeing it takes a long time to max out an augment through the game naturally as a few are inconvenient to access and you need 4x to get the full amount. Arguably this could be used to set a new WR, seeing you are legitimately starting a new game from scratch. Food for thought anyway

this reminds me of the time when I was playing the PS4 version of Tales of Vesperia and was in the final dungeon. I pressed the action button close to a ladder and Yuri climbed an invisible ladder in the middle of the air. I tried replicating this glitch, but without luck. I have no idea how it happened, I did save a video of it but it's currently on a hard drive in storage, I'd have to put it back into my PS4 to copy it to my PC

Mildly off-topic, but I feel like "New" Pokemon Snap is underrated. I literally never hear anyone talk about it, or even mention it. I only even found out about it when I was in a Pokemon Snap mood and searched KZbin. It's a fun game, and deserves more love. It's pretty much just normal Pokemon Snap, with way better graphics, new Pokemon, and new levels. Plus some new features tossed in. Like, it's exactly what a sequel should be, yet I only even knew it existed by complete luck and accident.

Did you test taking any pictures where the Lapras or Doduo would have been blocked partially or completely by the tree? It would be nice to see if anything interesting happens, or if it really does just score it as if the glitch never happened.

Feels like this should be easy enough to study and figure out with an emulator. Finding the address responsible for the tree, record an input file when it disappears and then study the code.

Hey Goose, are you using an expansion pack? I can't help but wonder if the expansion/jumper packs have anything to do with it. Sure it's a long shot, but if this is related to memory, then just maybe the hardware configuration has something to do with it

If the tree is there in the photo but not the video feed, we know for a fact that photos (as in, in your book) are not png files that they create on the fly. Then, how are they made?! Timesptamp, combined with position and angle of the player? It means that the game needs to be deterministic (like Trackmania). But the player can delay pokemons by throwing stuff at them etc so... How are these photo taken?! It's quite interesting... My guess is that a photo is snapshot of raw data. Meaning that if you were to change the texture of the ground to be purple AFTER having already taken a picture, the ground would be purple in that picture... Just a guess. Still, very interesting that the tree is in the photo Also, if the picture taken (while in game) doesn't show the tree, it's still very much possible that the score is being calculated based on that data set. This glitch being useful still hasn't been ruled out. Same goes with the collision, you should have tested that. I think that you released your video too soon, you should have experimented more.
@SkiddlyDoo9 ай бұрын
I immediately thought the same thing as you. The game isn't taking photos it's doing something else, which I think is extremely important when figuring out how to take the perfect photo. I think this type of information is actually specifically important to score based games as opposed to speed based games, because you're trying to beat a system rather than beat time itself. Knowing exactly how it works can allow you to more easily determine the exact conditions necessary to get the highest score.

Sounds like the palm tree "glitch" might be a triggered by an event, such as looking into the album... However, has anyone taken photis and the palm tree just disappeared without hitting up the album.. either way a TAS is needed to work out the reason for the tree glitch
@matirion4 ай бұрын
Isn't this due to how photos work? Photos load and unload objects based on the data it has but the actual stage is loaded. If your last photo on a stage is at an angle that barely unloads an object, then you look at it, and then you start a stage it tries to clean up the memory, it sticks sometimes. I think I saw a TAS demonstration of it a while back on bilibili.

Maybe looking into the code of the game might clear everything up. But I know that isn't easy to accomplish. I think that even if with some kind of ACE somehow turning objects invisible will be a reality, it will result in a new category involving pictures with glitches... Piches. Lol
