Ryōkan Taigu (1758-1831) was a quiet and unconventional Sōtō Zen Buddhist monk who lived much of his life as a hermit. Ryōkan is remembered for his poetry and calligraphy, which present the essence of Zen life. He renounced the world at an early age to train at nearby Sōtō Zen temple Kōshō-ji, refusing to meet with or accept charity from his family.
These selected poems have been taken from various poetry website - many translated by John Stevens
Image/Art - "The Monk Poet Ryokan" by Catherine Jao
Music - Fred Mitchin - Zodiac -with thanks to Fred for his lovely and kind gift of music for this channel

I don't think he would. His happy mind would rather make him laugh and clap his hands. Later he would maybe write a poem, a haiku.

I was struck by the contrast between 8:15 ...I have only the tranquillity of this hermitage to offer... and 9:50 ... sparse rain in my desolate hermitage at night... To my mind _tranquillity_ is suffused with _fullness,_ an abundance of self-full personal connection with all of Creation, so, when a sense of desolation creeps in, when we start to seek confirmation from the cold stones of our hermitage, we need to recall that those stones were put there to shelter us, because Creation loves us and we are beautifully worthy of this love. Desolation cannot withstand the immanence of Love.

a gourd full of pine wind a lone hermit sits upright at night head of hair gently thatching her hut customs of monks and men long forgotten sutras and scrolls piled amongst books a warm spring breeze blows open ajar doors carrying with it the scent of all things a page flutters - an eye reads the word a mouth flaps open and close lips smack tongue clicks sinews stretch a buddha's pine wind never stops blowing
