This comment is old as dirt in internet time, but I feel like I have an obligation to reply. I don't know if you've ever had the experience, but lots of modern theaters/stadiums/venues will often have 1 or more subterranean levels underneath even the "basement" or ground floor to keep all the pieces of the show moving efficiently. That feature presumably originated in Roman ampitheatres. When he says "bowels" he certainly means it.
