Corbin, I read the article you wrote on this today (12:05) and it's totally on point. "Disillusioned and incompatible" indeed. The fact that Macdonald was even considering an Air Raid guy like Grubb last year surprised me; surprised me more he was hired and now not surprised at all he's one and done. One thing I like about Macdonald is when he knows he made a mistake, he seems to move on from it pretty fast.

Our best running games were when K9 was out. The NFL is much more about getting 3+ yards consistently rather than getting 15+ yard runs occasionally. K9 has not produced consistent positive yards in his touches. That is a significant problem in the NFL.
@RogerThatAZ
@RogerThatAZ 16 күн бұрын
Exactly. Yet Grubb still tried to run gaps that the o-line clearly couldn't open and K9 clearly couldn't power through. Play after play, alllllll year long. This doesn't even take into account K9's propensity unsuccessfully stutter step and juke like crazy only to get tackled for a loss.

Grubb's failure was not developing a system to adapt to the strengths and weaknesses of his personnel. With a sub-average offensive line he should have developed more short-medium passing strategy and had Geno under center to help play action. Everybody could see this but Grubb kept trying to force his system on personnel that wasn't cut out for it. If he'd just made a few minor tweaks and stuck to them he'd probably still have a job

Agreed about Kenny Mcintosh and would add because of Walker being hurt so frequently its almost a must have to have a 3rd guy with lots of potential and talent. Will be very interesting to see what our running backs and offemse could be and how great overall the offense could be if they get a couple good solid offensive linemen.

My opinion is we just have to trust coach McDonald. From an outside perspective we can't really tell how much was the players and how much was the OC not getting the best our of the players. So much of the play calling is adapting to what your guys can execute against any particular team on that particular day. We can't really see what that clearly from outside the team. Trust Mike McDonald

People not realizing how Ryan Grubb kind of let Geno down this season. When you refuse to develop the run game, which Grubb had no excuse for, it heavily limits the mismatches you get from play action, which two years of data shows is Geno's bread and butter. So now you have more pressure on Geno and you've taken away a huge part of his game. Now add a bad offensive line. Now factor in how Geno barely targeted Tyler Lockett this year because my guy doesn't want to get hit anymore. I love Tyler, but his YAC is basically zero, which makes him kind of useless when Geno needs yards or a 3rd down conversion. Geno is not an elite QB, but he is very good, and he can't play against both the defense and Grubb's scheme. Grubb wasn't adapting enough to the players and strengths he had, and that's why he's gone.

I agree 100% and would say for me Tre Brown is also another guy getting beat constantly and taking penalties. Otherwise the only other guy i replace is Hankins the guy is way too fat and slow and found that when he was in over Murphy they gave upma lot more long drives led by the rush. On defense I'd also be giving tape to send home with Woolen on things to improve. Lots of talent and great athletics but he needs to play smarter. On offense it would be Tomlinson for me maybe draft a left guard or pick one up in free agency. The right guard and center we have guys who have some promise but they could find a good vet for 1 or both of those spots too. Wasn't too impressed with Barner dropping balls and completely botching blocking assignments early in the year but as the season went along he got a lot better and Fant is pretty decent and lesser Brown. Who would you be replacing other than Pritchett?

@@sterlingmork2974 You pretty much nailed it. Only other thing is we desperately need our next franchise QB or really anyone who can replace Geno sooner than later. Feel like he played more to protect his performance bonuses than to ensure the team wins. I do wonder about Woolen's work ethic. He has way too much talent to play as poorly as he does much of the time. Reports of him out partying the night before games.

The decision to hire Grubb was most likely Schneider's, as it's been reported that "Mike had to be convinced that Grubb was the right fit, as there were concerns he was too pass heavy". Given the fact that Schneider had to wait so late to interview and hire Mike, with Baltimore having their deep playoff run last season, coupled with most OCs being scooped up by then already, makes sense it was a Schneider hire that Mike reluctantly went ahead and said "Ok, let's give it a shot" to.

Maybe I missed it, but all season long, we were complaining about a really bad offensive line. And yet, the major discussion was the coodinator. How much better would the 'Hawks have been if they got more than 1 yard per run - and yes, in the earlier games, they kept trying to pound the ball hoping to get a big play - but almost always getting 1 yard or 2. Someone suggested that the only reason K-9 was successful was because of the occasional 15 yard runs or so, but only getting 1-2 yards the rest of the time. I was really ticked off that until the end of the season that they gave McIntosh a chance. In my opinion, they should have gone with 3 backs and see which one(s) would do better depending on the offensive line and the defensive scheme. Pounding the same rock in the same place with the same players made me sick. So, yes, there is a problem with the coaching, but the line was a huge disappointment. What also made me sick was how many times a defensive player was into our side of the line almost as quickly as the ball was snapped. Is that quality of players or quality of coaching?

Any talk of a D.K. trade brings out all the crazy talk......on both sides. I'm not interested in getting rid of him just to get rid of him, but I'm with Rang that if you could get some valuable draft capital for him it could be worth it. I doubt there's anyone in the league who'd give a first rounder for him, but go fishing and see what he could bring. If it's a crazy good offer jump on it. How to replace him? If you're one of those who wants to spend the 30m+ there's Tee Higgins as a pending free agent. This is where the less informed say there's no way the Bengals will let him go. Yeah, Burrow would scream like a gut shot tiger, but the Bengals nickname is the Bungles....for a reason. They just fired their highly regarded DC if you haven't paid attention. They have a history of shooting themselves in the foot. Higgins has almost as many yards a DK, as a number two receiver, has better hands, high points better, runs better routes, and is more dependable in general as well as a couple years younger. We need upgrades nearly everywhere on this team to be genuine contenders. Don't let sacred cows get in the way.

My issue is this firing shows a lack of vision and planning at the organizational level. You hired a first time OC from college, finished middle of the pack on offense, and you fire the guy? So you thought a rookie OC with a bottom OL was gonna do better? Says a lot about the culture and vision on both John and Mike. They all look like newbies in this one. Rookie OC who is literally league average in his first year installing a new system with entirely new set of players he didn’t even know. 🤷‍♂️ it’s weird

Trouble was he never adjusted. He ran his stuff matter who they were playing. Works in college where you have more talent than the other team 99% of the time. But in the NFL you run your stuff sure but it tailored to attack what the other team doesn't do well. This week you attack lBs next week you might be attacked weaker SSs. Or run between the tackles. He never did that. It's why he's gone at this point in his career he couldn't tailor the offense each week to attack that week defensive weaknesses. He'll go back and rip college up. But he just doesn't have the knowledge at this point in his career to run and NFL offense. Each week you could see that. It didn't work well they moved on. Grubb isn't bad it just didn't fit.

The problem is John Schneider, He has a long track record of ignoring the offensive line. Paying less attention...HE is the bottleneck, the problem. This team needs desperately to build a snorting offensive line. Lockett leaving will clear up cap room, trade Woolen or DK, whatever it takes to get some quality free agents and draft focus to turn this around quickly. I'm not sure if it's possible with JS calling the shots. Evidence suggest he doesn't think its worth focusing on. He's stuck in his head with his years with a young Russ, running around and avoiding defenders. He hasnt evolved.

Grubb is to blame regarding the run game but Geno was also to blame regarding the pass game. Isn't it peculiar that Grubb's game at Washington was the long pass and we had a deep threat in Metcalf, and yet Geno has the 30th longest yards in air per pass? The reason is that Geno was checking down and protecting his completion percentage performance bonus at the expense of the team.
