The fact is, Gerrard had to qualify for Champions League vs Malmo, or sell players to get money for further investment. Neither happened...they strengthened to an extent, with Sakala and Lundstram. At the time of leaving, the team was 7 points clear in the league, and ended up going to to Europa final. The tools were there to repeat, after he said "We will defend this title with our lives". I appreciate Gerrard for what he did, but the way he left was sickening.

Johnston is a far better player, Johnston would probably walk into teams like West Ham, Everton, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and whoever. Tavernier has always been a Championship level player. He would never hold down a place in a decent team as he's clueless defensively and gets caught out 20-30 times a season. Johnston is an athletic incredibly solid defender who very few players get the beating of and is untouchable in domestic football.
