Agreed. While I will admit I am a Rangers fan, to see the team accept that "Hey we've been to the playoff's consistantly for a while now but we're not going the distance." And opting to rebuild instead of trying to shore up the roster and make a push was a risky move and while it absolutely sucked to see players go, it was the right decision and while the first half of the season this year wasn't the best, from after the all star break until the hiatus due to the global situation, they played really well and got to 2 points out of a wildcard spot. The future is looking good for the NYR if they keep going the way they are. And like you said pulling the trigger when they did let them sell high and get as much back as they could to help with the rebuild. Some might say it was a huge risk but based on the direction they're going it just might pay off for them in the long run.

Brent Harris the problem is they sold low on that Tampa trade. Wait till the draft if Tampa doesn’t want to offer Anthony Cirelli. I get why Tampa wouldn’t but I think you get back multiple firsts for Mac ,Miller instead of 1 late first and late second with Howden,Vlad and Hajek. Rick Nash trade is why they are doing well with Lindgren and K’Andre Miller(traded up). They were fine with Tampa trade but the condition Tampa needed the Cup instead of reaching it or ECF was a huge mistake.

@@PhillyLeotardo25 I don't think they sold low, I think they whiffed hard on both Howden and Hajek. It's been pretty clear that the Rangers have tried really hard to force those 2 into the lineup to make this trade work out, and it hasn't really worked. If they had actually gotten two 1sts and two 2nds, it might have worked out better (although it's also possible they would have Lias Anderson'd those picks too), but the prospects they were so high on haven't panned out, and they could really have used a 27 year old JT Miller much more than Brett Howden despite his youth. So now it's basically all on Nils Lundquist to carry this trade, and while I'm personally really high on him, he's not going to put up the offensive numbers to make this trade look good unless they can't hold on to Adam Fox. It's really hard for defensemen to put up impressive offensive numbers without significant power play minutes, and I can't see Fox getting moved down from PP1 anytime soon.

Not only did they sell low they sold low and accepted throw ins, by that I mean at the time Howden probably had no chance of making the roster because of the Lightning C depth, so he was always going to be a trade chip. Same with Hajak, trading for McD means they had a D of McD Hedman and Sergachev. So where would Hajak play. At the time Miller had better numbers than Names while playing multiple positions and up and down the lineup. It's like they forgot McD wasn't going to be a FA and we're panicking thinking they would lose him.

Interestingly enough, this trade tree and the Nash trade tree are now linked (through Lundkvist). NYR sent the 1st they got from Dallas to St. Louis for Tarasenko (Blais was another piece the sent back, but he is the piece that connects the Nash deal to this one too).

Horrible at defense - the thing he's paid to do - and just a hitter, but one who hits without considering the context. He gave up so many odd man rushes and prime scoring chances by going for a big bone-crunching hit without bothering to make sure the puck is controlled or there is anyone covering behind him, etc. Awful.

Moving the money to sign Gaborik was the main reason for the trade from the NYR side. Taking that into consideration, that makes this trade even better for the Rangers. Gaborik was extremely productive. And then traded. All of which should be on this trade tree.

When NY went to the Stanley cup finals, they beat Montreal in the conference finals, largely with the help of Ryan McDonagh. Had McDonagh been with Montreal during that series, maybe Montreal makes the Stanley cup final, but we will never know. McDonagh has also helped the Tampa Bay lightning beat pretty solid Habs rosters in the playoffs. It hurts Habs fans to see him be a difference maker against Montreal in the playoffs

@@michaelb4833 I even did the research for them. Montreal got a first (Pacioretty) and Josh Gorges for Rivet and fifth that happened to be Julien Demers (never played NHL). Sharks traded Rivet to Sabres after two ok seasons for 2 seconds (2009 : William Wrenn, never played. 2010 : Traded to Hurricanes for 5th round pick [Cody Ferrerio, never played] and Niclas Wallin [10 points in 97 games for SJ]. The pick was Mark Alt [18 NHL games, 0 points]. With the Sabres, RIvet was picked up in waivers by the Blue Jackets. Josh Gorges was a pillar in Montreal (wore the A) for a little more than 7 years as a defensive d (464 gp, 88 points, +35). Traded to Buffalo where he did not show up those numbers (-42 in 4 seasons) for a 2016 second round pick (Chad Krys, does not play in the NHL, and is not killing it in the AHL). That pick, along with another second round pick in 2016 went to the Blackhawks for Andrew Shaw. Ok, that other pick was Alex Debrincat. Shush But, Shaw was again traded by the Habs to the Hawks for a 2nd in 2020, a 3rd in 2021 and a 7th in 2021. Pacioretty put up 226 goals and 448 pts as a Hab (was the Captain) in 626 gp. He got traded to the VGK (106 pts in 137 gp) for Nick Suzuki (41 pts in 71 games as a ROOKIE), Tomas Tatar (119 in 148 points) AND a second round pick in 2019 (which got traded to the Kings for a 3rd and 5th round pick in 2019) The second round pick by the Kings was Samuel Fagemo (13 pts in 7 gp for team Sweden in the 2020 WHJC). Seems pretty good. 3rd pick for Habs was Mattias Norlinder. Played WHJC, no points in 7 games as a D. But highly ranked prospect. 5th round pick : Jacob Leguerrier. Good prospect. Double his total points in the OHL this year.

So, bit of ECHL history for ya, Steve. The ECHL (formerly known as the East Coast Hockey League) formed in 1988 with these teams: Carolina Thunderbirds, Erie Panthers, Johnstown Chiefs, Knoxville Cherokees and Virginia Lancers. The expansion that brought Las Vegas into the league occurred in 2003, bringing 7 teams from the defunct West Coast Hockey League (or WCHL): the Anchorage/Alaska Aces, the Bakersfield Condors, the Fresno Falcons, the Idaho Steelheads, the Las Vegas Wranglers, the Long Beach Ice Dogs and the San Diego Gulls. So, at that point, the East Coast Hockey League adopted the ECHL moniker it has now. So, yes, it was weird to call it the East Coast Hockey League, given how far west the league expanded, and it seems that the league is moving back to the East Coast, given that, out of the 7 teams that were brought into the league in 2003, only 1 remains in their original city and the league: The Idaho Steelheads. Anchorage/Alaska relocated to Portland Maine in 2018-19, Fresno folded midway through the 2008-09 season, Las Vegas (ECHL home of noted Vegas Golden Knight Deryk Engelland, and Oilers coach Glen Gulutzan) officially folded in 2014-15, and Long Beach folded in 2006-07. San Diego folded in 2006, and went without minor pro hockey for about a decade. Bakersfield, my hometown and home city of my beloved Condors, were a consistent team in the ECHL from 2003 up to 2015, when they were moved to Norfolk, Virginia. However, the cities of Bakersfield, Stockton, San Diego and Ontario, as well as the San Francisco/San Jose area (home of the by then long-defunct San Francisco Bulls, AND San Jose Sharks, for that matter) wouldn’t be without minor pro hockey for much longer, as, in 2015, the Oilers, Flames, Ducks, Kings, and Sharks announced they were moving the Oklahoma City Barons, Abbotsford Heat, Norfolk Admirals, Manchester Monarchs, and Worcester Sharks to the cities in California listed above, retaining AHL membership, while moving the Condors, Stockton Thunder, and Ontario Reign to Norfolk, Adirondack, and Manchester, retaining the ECHL membership, essentially screwing the cities of Oklahoma City, Abbotsford, and Worcester out of teams, and demoting Norfolk and Manchester to the ECHL. I say this right after you brought up Las Vegas in the ECHL because, in 2020-21 (or whenever the next AHL season is), Las Vegas will join Bakersfield, Loveland (home of the Colorado Eagles, AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche) Ontario, San Diego, San Jose, Tucson, and perhaps Stockton (if they figure out their arena situation) in the AHL’s Pacific Division, having been relocated from San Antonio, Texas, only for the Vegas AHL team to move to nearby Henderson the next year. If you couldn’t tell, I was an ECHL fan that moved to the AHL with my Condors.

I remember at the time, the goal in getting Gomez was to recreate a line that had had tremendous success in NJ, with Gomez, Gionta, and I can't remember the third player. The Habs settled for a replacement for that third guy, and got Mike Cammalleri. That all happened in the wake of a crushing sweep against the Bruins in the first round of... uh... I think it was 2009 playoffs, not sure. Anyways, this hinted at a rebuild, abd the Habs burned all the dead wood they could, and on paper it was gonna be an awesome trade for the Canadiens. Only, when Gomez tanked, he tanked HARD. He even became a meme in the wake of the supposed 2012 apocalypse, who was supposed to start with a very improbable event, which turned out to be Gomez scoring a goal. One of four only in the entire season. In that followed an aging Gionta who was traded to Buffalo, and Cammalleri with attitude issues just wasn't in the plans any longer. That trio lasted about 3 seasons if I remember correctly. The next offseason, Bergevin rolled in, and the first move he did was buy out Gomez' contract. Montreal chanted at Bergevin, he was heralded as a savior on that move alone. Yet it was too late, because Montreal was watching how McDonagh was evolving during that time, and yeah, in the Rangers' 2014 playoffs, they eliminated the Habs in 3rd round (eastern conference finals) with McDonagh hurting a lot.

Imagine, at one point, Montreal could have had McDonaugh, Markov and Subban on their blueline. Toss Petry into that mix, and that is a really good blueline in front of Price. I don't blame them for making that deal - development is not guaranteed and Gomez was a top player in the NHL at that time. Hindsight is 20/20, but it was still a bad deal.

I understand that McDonagh went on to have a solid career in New York and now is doing good with Tampa, and I get Gomez went downhill after his first 2 seasons with the Habs, but that’s the risk of making these types of trades. When you’re trading a young player or a pick for an established veteran player in order to make a run at the cup or stay competitive (which they did and yes Halak was amazing that year, but as mentioned, Gomez had 14 points in 19 games which is solid production), you have to accept the fact that you think you might regret it later if that prospect turns out to be a great player. Put it this way, Gomez was averaging something like 65 pts per season, the Habs were not gonna resign an aging 35 year old Koivu and Plekanec was not 1st line material yet. They went on to trade for Gomez, who yes was definitely overpaid relative to that time, but was gonna replace what Koivu brought the Habs for 15 years. He scored 59 pts his first season, he had 47 assists. He was a good playmaker and the Habs went to the ECF. Montreal felt that trading a young defenseman prospect was a good move to make in order to get that 1st line center. They had prime Markov (30, and before his injury that limited him to only 65 games in 3 years) Gorges (25 and a solid defensive minded defender) and veteran Hamrlik (35). Sure it wouldve been nice to keep a 20 year old McDonagh, but if Habs don’t make that trade, they probably don’t make the ECF in 2010, it would definitely have gone a lot different, maybe McDonagh doesn’t grow The same way with the Habs. One thing you can’t predict is a player’s performance in the future because Gomez flat out fell off a cliff. If he scores 60 pts each year, then this trade isn’t talked about as much. That’s the hard part about analyzing a veteran for prospect/young player trade. A bad or terrible trade is the Habs trading a young progressing player (Ribeiro) for a washed up veteran (Ninnima???) now that’s a terrible trade lol

An aspect of the Gomez acquisition you didn't mention was that he was used to attract highly sought after free agents, Mike Cammalleri and Brian Gionta. Scott Gomez by himself was a mediocre grab by Montreal, but I believe Cammalleri and especially Gionta would not have signed with them without Gomez on the team. While this is technically not part of the trade, it was the main reason this trade was a win for Montreal just as much as it was for NY.

In 2009 the Montreal almost sent Carey Price, P.K. Subban, Max Pacioretty and a 1st to Tampa Bay for Vincent Lecavalier. The deal broke down because Lecavalier refused to be sent to Montreal. So the Goalmez trade wouldn't of been the worse trade that year for Montreal. Just imagine that.

The real reason behind that trade is that Montreal wanted to sign Gionta and got Gomez to convince the former to accept their offer. Horrible trade long term wise, but if you consider the Habs got Gionta out of it, it makes it a little less painful.

This is one of the worst trades in Montreal Canadien history. At the time, it was well-known the Rangers wanted to get rid of Gomez and there were almost no suitors at the time. Montreal overpaid by a lot for a guy with declining numbers. One part of this trade tree that's missing, which I get since it's technically not part of the trade, is that the Rangers used the money they saved trading Scott Gomez to acquire Marian Gaborik the next day at a 7.5M$ cap hit for 5 years. The Rangers got 114 goals, 115 assists for a total of 229 points in 255 games for Gaborik, as well as 13 points in 25 playoff games before they traded him to the Blue Jackets. Montreal got one good season out of Gomez, his production dropped off a cliff the next season, he played 38 games after that and the next one got bought out. Even when the trade was announced, it was baffling to many Montreal fans. Bad bad trade.

This trade is nefariously bad for Montreal, but I remember at the time, its something they needed to do... beyond Gomez, Habs were able to land Brian Gionta, a future captain and a player who had success with Gomez in New Jersey, and Mike Cammelleri who, in that playoff run, was an absolute beast. They were built to win that year, with Markov, Subban, Hamrlik, Spacek, and even Brisebois, Gill, and Bergeron on D. I'm not gonna say thats top notch D but its a solid mix of what you need and up front though they were small, they surprised a lot of people. Halak and Price as a backup in net.... honestly it wasnt the powerhouse superteam, but the run was special. If they could have at least been similar in the following two years, I would have considered it a decent trade. But Gomez fell off, the D got old fast, and the league dealt with their size up front. Not to mention Carey Price, as good as he is, didnt hit his stride for another few years. Unfortunatey this will always be the case for Montreal, always overpaying or overspending for talent that has reached its peak, as well as never figuring out how to draft well early, then not developing properly.

Oli Jokinin missed the last shootout goal in the last game of season against the Flyers in 2010. The Rangers were eliminated from playoffs and the Flyers went all the way to the finals and lost to the Blackhawks. That one still hurts

A point worthy of consideration is that Mtl also gave up Saku Koivu in that deal. Rumors aside (Cammalleri said he wouldn't sign as UFA unless Saku was replaced), the reality is that without this trade Koivu is resigned and stays a Hab to finish his career. It was a classless move ("Your services will no longer be needed"), it was a downgrade (following the trade, Koivu outperformed Gomez in every statistical category... including hits), and I'm glad that it blew up in the team's face. I no longer consider myself a Habs fan and that chain of events played a big part.

Much like with the Duchene trade, this one has yet to fully bloom. Just how well the Rangers do (did?) depends on how Lundvist and Henriksson pan-out. If they continue to develop as advertised, we should see the Rangers in another Cup final sooner rather than later.
