Storyline
History is turned on its comic head when, in tenth-century England, King Arthur travels the countryside to find knights who will join him at the Round Table in Camelot. Gathering up the men is a tale in itself but after a bit of a party at Camelot, many decide to leave only to be stopped by God, who sends them on a quest: to find the Holy Grail. After a series of individual adventures, the knights are reunited but must face a wizard named Tim the Enchanter, killer rabbits and lessons in the use of holy hand grenades. Their quest comes to an end however when the Police intervene - just what you would expect in a Monty Python movie.

The animator (who suddenly and conveniently dies of a heart attack) is Terry Gilliam, the "token American Python." He played King Arthur's squire (coconut banger) and a few other small roles. He also co-directed with co-Python Terry Jones. He's a well-known and well-respected movie director. You should check out "Time Bandits,", "Brazil," "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," "The Fisher King"....he's made some of my favorite films, most of which are part of The Criterion Collection.

My favorite thing about the Monty Python guys was that they were all at university to do other things than be in a comedy troupe, but the comedy was very well received and the rest is history. Graham Chapman was an ear/nose/throat doctor, for example, and the late great Terry Jones was a medieval scholar. The 'your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries' insult came from him and apparently it was an authentic thing people said during the Middle Ages. Hamsters were always fucking and having lots of babies and elderberries were commonly used to make home made wine in England so the French taunter was basically saying your mum's a whore and your dad's a drunk. Monty Python is educational. The guys, or whoever runs their shit, had fun with home video as well. The first DVD release of this was a long time coming and when it finally arrived with all sorts of extra features, there was much rejoicing. However, when you put the DVD in it played the first five minutes of the wrong movie. Not just the wrong Python movie, a totally incorrect movie, a random black and white comedy from the '60s that nobody remembers. The opening credits and most of the first scene play and hopefully the viewer hasn't given up and ejected it because eventually you hear Terry Gilliam or somebody doing an ancient coughing projectionist voice on the soundtrack as he bitches about having to come up here and fix things because someone put on 'the wrong bloody film.' I often wondered how many people returned their DVDs as defective because they never made it to the punchline?

Classic! Growing up in the US, in the early 80's, we used to see a lot of old British comedy on Public Broadcasting. ie: Benny Hill, Black Adder, Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones, etc..., but my favorite was always Monty Python. Those sketches and films in large part, shaped the development of my sense of humor. Love it! Hope you're feeling better.

So happy you called out the art direction, costume design and editing! It's quite amazing what they managed to achieve on an incredibly limited budget, and as you say, it grounded the story in a way that allowed the comedy to really stand out. The co-costume designer, Charles Knode, actually did the costumes for Braveheart too. You can see a lot of parallels between the design of the two movies!

I worked as a cook in an Italian restaurant back in the mid-80s (pardon me while I put on "that song" by Billy Joel). for almost two weeks, one of the waiters and I would re-enacted the Black Knight Scene just before the dinner rush, switching roles each night. Made for a good start to the shift.

I love John Cleese, got to see him live a couple years ago when he was touring Canada, his theme was “why there is no hope”, he was really funny and heckled a man who got up during his show to use the bathroom, put the spot light on him n everything, then when he got back he asked him if he was ok, I was very glad it wasn’t me lol

I can remember seeing this in grade 9 or 10, and not fully getting all the jokes, but it's definitely a movie you can revisit every few years or so. Plus many of the jokes are baked in elsewhere. Also I recommend Spinal Tap if you haven't seen it!

If you were wondering, the movie was directed by Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones. Terry Gilliam, the only American member of Monty Python (he played "Patsy", Arthur's coconut carrying servant), did all the animation sequences on the movie (and the TV show) and went on to direct films like Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, 12 Monkeys...

You were correct that they used the same castle and they shot it from every conceivable angle because while they were shooting in Scotland, they were going to film at several castles, but then something happened and they only had permission to shoot at the privately owned castle

I first saw this film in my first year at uni in 1977 - Rag were having 2 showings and I got into the first one (30p admission!) and laughed so much I missed a lot of the jokes, so we got them to put on a 3rd showing, which was unheard-of, and I got to see it again the same night!

I'd only let Royalty in if they brought their own tea. Because you just know that tea is gonna be some good s**t, well. when QEII was still alive. Unfortunately, since the Queen buggered off, I can't speak of Charles' taste in tea, perhaps he likes all that herbal crap. In which case, he can go away. Can't speak for Jagger, or Branson - though I think Branson would bring better tea along with him rather than Jagger. Besides, if Jagger came along there'd be tea all over the place what with all his dancing. Hope that answers your query. :)

They had me at the coconuts. Our local Public Television Station used to broadcast Monty Python’s Flying Circus, so when this came out we were eager to go see it. The movie theater recurrent late show was this film or The Rocky Horror Picture show. It never got old, especially if you got baked beforehand.

Everyone needs to see this film at least once. John Cleese played the most characters if I’m not mistaken. One of those being Lancelot had my favorite scene of all. The storming the castle scene. Cracks me up every time. “Kung Pow Enter the Fist” ripped it in another hilarious scene. To answer another one of your questions: Yes, the castle is the same castle. They just filmed it on different sides to keep the budget low. The budget was also the reason for the coconut gag. Couldn’t afford horses. And as for the ending, they didn’t know how to end the movie, so they just had the police shut them down. They then went back and added the scenes of the professor getting slashed and the other cop scenes to tie it all together. Genius if you ask me. So about this tea and The Queen talk, will there be biscuits? 😂

This was one of my favorite movies growing up. For such a goofy movie, it has a surprising amount of layering, I noticed as an adult. “Life of Brian” is quite similar to “Holy Grail.” “A Fish Called Wanda” has become perhaps my favorite comedy.

I have to admit I (as an American) am astonished you have never seen Monty Python. They are one of the greatest treasures the British have given to the world. As a kid my brother and I quietly turned on the TV and watched them late at night when we were supposed to be in bed. Only got caught once as I recall. By the way, many of them had good solo careers as well. Try Fawlty Towers as well. You won't regret it, I think.

Here in Canada, we watched _Monty Python's Flying Circus_ TV series when we were kids, on public broadcasting stations, along with _Benny Hill,_ _Cell Block H_ and _Doctor Who._ I'm quite sure that _Python_ was a big influence on _The Kids in the Hall._

The Black Knight (kn-ig-it) was played by a 1-legged man. Filming was much easier as was the hole they had to dig for the 1 leg. Unobservant me just noticed Sir Robin's shield has a chicken on it. lol. The holy hand grenade is reprised (briefly) in the movie Ready Player One along w/ dozens of other mostly 80s movie's iconic items in the movie.

I went to a Meat Loaf concert once (free ticket) and he kept ragging on a guy wearing a Jimmy Buffet t-shirt, made him sing lyrics but he didn't know them, really cruel. My favorite part is their use of "Run away!", which is historically accurate. "Retreat" is a French word and this takes place before the Norman invasion, so the English would absolutely have yelled run away instead.

This was deffo in my 90s childhood but also, my mom and I watched a LOT of Absolutely Fabulous lol British humor is not understood by all but I think Monty Python was at least a staple in most American 90s kid's humor appreciation🧐🤷🏽‍♀️ I think most of us saw the movie in the classroom at some point lol😆👌🏽

Usually in Python, it was Graham Chapman himself who loved playing police officers and military types. How fitting Chapman himself should be arrested, thus the guest actors as police kinda makes sense.

Much easier to watch now. Had trouble watching this On VHS as a teen in the 90's, the quality was horrible (tapes would get worse as they were watched and re-round). Made it harder to understand and like watching in 240p with lines going across...I dug it, but so glad it is easier to watch these days. Love it!

"I fart in your general direction!" 😀 and I sometimes say "Ni" when I mean no 😊 Saw this when I was in my 20s. On VHS. aww those were the days. Laughed the whole time. I used to watch Flying Circus on Public Broadcasting Station. I always liked the animation. So weird and funny. Similar style can be seen in the Beatles animated movie "Yellow Submarine". Although the Beatles themselves didn't do the voices, but make an appearance at the end. Check it out, even if just for the music. 😀🎸 p.s. glad you're doing better!
