Fun, or perhaps not fun, fact: This was the last movie to finish shooting in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina. Some of the cast actually did come back to help in cleanup and rebuilding after the storm. I know Sophia Bush did for sure. That said, as a New Orleanian this movie did do something that massively annoyed me in particular. WHY INCLUDE BATHORY? We in New Orleans have our own actual historical madwoman who tortured people. Madame LaLaurie. Woman who tortured her slaves so badly that it actually outraged everyone and had a multiracial mob try to lynch her. She escaped, and no one is quite sure what happened to her. THAT is absolutely horror movie villain worthy and somehow we gotta import Liz Bathory?

@brandonmeeker77428 ай бұрын
@DistractedGlobeGuy Oh don't get me wrong it doesn't make the film any less trash than what it is, I'm just saying it's nice that Fatal Frame was acknowledged at the time when the juggernaut that is Silent Hill 2 was out around the same time and was in the spotlight way more than Fatal Frame was.

None if the weapons or strats pertain to 4, but sort of pertain to 1. In SH4 you collect 7 spears to damage a giant monster before the actual boss is vulnerable to damage and you try to do it fast enough to stop a female character from walking into a death trap. I thought maybe since SH4 was the newest SH game at the time they deliberately didn’t give away the strat. Clearly the writers played SH1 though. It wasn’t until years later that I went to the goodwill “thrift store” and found a DVD copy of the movie. I keep it out of nostalgia and the random rewatches I do every handful of years. It’s baffling, uncanny, entertaining, got a an atmosphere, and lives in the very weird state of the 2000s. It’s very off beat and I think I respect it more for that, than anything the film actually does. I honestly wouldn’t mind a comedic horror remake of this title. I loved the older author ladies' monologue. It's supposed to be scary, but "She vowed to be wessewwected", just hurts my ribs with laughter.

Loomis was Hutch's childhood best friend whose family took Hutch in after his mother's death. & on a side note: I've always enjoyed this movie, but I do have a few gripes about it. 1. Hutch is an extremely boring and bland character & Abigail is weird, intrusive, a compulsive LIAR, & annoying. (I love the part where Phineas points out that the group just met her 5 minutes ago or something along those lines). 2. It is unclear as to whether October & Hutch are dating. It seems like they were, but then he was flirting with Abigail right in front of October & when October passed away, he barely even mourned her and quickly ended up getting with Abigail like the same day. 3. The line Phineas says about Abigail "The girl has got body karate going on" was funny, but in no way a fitting description.

KZbin put this at the top of my feed because it knows for a gosh dang fact that this movie will NEVER leave my mind. I have no idea why after all this time this movie has stuck with me more than just about everything else I've ever watched in my life. Maybe it was Frankie, maybe it was the concept. I dunno, man. I want to rewatch it now, again.

I died when hutch told everyone how he thinks the game is killing them and then October brings up it might be a ghost and he shuts her down and calls her crazy 😂

This is one of my all time favorite horror movies , I watched it on cable when I was 8 years old when my mom wasn’t home late at night , and was scared shitless . All I ever remembered was the plot so I searched it up when I was 14 and haven’t forgot about it since

Their use of Erzebet Bathori makes it obvious that the studio was trying to ape off the early 00s vampire trend, with Underworld coming out only 3 years earlier. That said, I'd argue with the Southern Gothic layer was there first, the original intention might've been to reference Delphine LaLaurie, an infamous 19th century serial killer from New Orleans, who tortured and killed slaves before one of them (who was a cook chained to a stove) set fire to the house. When the fire was put out, they found the slave who directed them to her torture chamber attic. LaLaurie's death has been contested by scholars, with many believing she died while hiding in France in exile. That could also explain writing in our protagonist's fear of fire, and how it could've directly played into the story. The video game thing leaves me scratching my head though.

Lol, I didn't forget this. Stay Alive always played on cable when I was growing up. It tying in with video games and the ghost aspect really appealed to me. Nostalgia for sure.

13:33-13:39 Ryan's fake-shock shouting at the first "dying in real life to that of the game" reveal was highly amusing. 💀

i always thought the reason bathory freaks out when seeing her reflection was due to her vanity, and how ugly she viewed herself as (been a hot minute since she got a bath of any kind, blood or not after all) happy to see this covered; it's legit one of my favorite movies, and when i just started getting into horror movies, i latched onto it hard. it's a comfort film for me nowadays, like Saw 2

Aww I remember seriously enjoying this movie :D I flashed back to it when watching the similarly themed Black Mirror episode. With both, I thought "damn, if it wouldn't kill me, I'd totally play this game..." Holding onto this DVD forever, lol.

I actually feel like Bathory cheating would have been a great ironic twist if one of the main characters had a habit of playing games with cheat codes, something quite common in the ps2 era.

This movie always randomly stuck with me but i can credit this movie with educating me in the tale of elizabeth bathory. Color my surprise when this information was useful when watching Castlevania: Nocturne. That said i wouldnt mind a remake of this by modern contexts i think the tech is better for this to make a fun, "let me in" type movie

I used to love this flick back in the day! Going to have to rewatch it after this review! If you tackle a found footage next, why not something like “The Last Broadcast” or “Lake Mungo” something more obscure you don’t hear much about anymore.

I’m so happy you covered this one! My father enjoyed scary movies and my siblings and I ended up catching his interest in them. He took my fearless little brother to watch this movie in theatres and they walked out because it finally scared my brother. Eventually we rented it on dvd and my cousin made fun of my brother. Near the end of the movie I looked over and my brother was leaning in me to hide from the movie and I looked further to see that same cousin leaning into my brother hiding themself from the movie 🤘🏽 This makes me want to revisit it even more

On the vampire/Dracula note, allegedly Bram Stoker was originally basing his novel on Bathory before finding out about Vlad Tepes during his research. On the scripture note, the Malleus Maleficarum/Hammer of Witches was very much a real book. It includes such hits as "Believing in witches is heresy because you are believing in a being that can thwart the will of God, but NOT believing in witches is ALSO heresy because you are denying God's ability to create such a being."

I unironically LOVE this movie because of how weird it was in concept and execution. It's how I found out about Elizabeth Bathory and all her craziness. A good turn off your brain movie and it was made by Disney of all people! Good stuff.

Being told about Elizabeth Bathory, as if my interest in the Castlevania series hadn't already brushed me up against the historical figure numerous times. I get the impression she's kinda on the B-list of gothic horror inspirations.

Love the movie and the commentary. An idea/theory i had that is sorta half confirmed/showed in the movie is that the reason the game is able to cheat so much is because the developer not only made it so the game is cursed but also linked an already active spirit and influence of Elizabeth to the game and giving her even more abilities but also at some points meaning she is somewhat trapped by the game as well. Its clear that something must have been going on with her in the first place as her body was in the tower. And through out the film we see Game ghosts and then real ghosts. So to some degree she is bound by the rules of the game but because she is also real she can use her abilities in the real world to cheat in the game. Also a lot of the inconstant shots of the game where at some points it has a HUD and everything then sometimes it doesn't is because those shots were unfinished other than the cutscene moments ingame.

Moving Elizabeth Bathy from Medieval Eastern Europe to an American Plantation is such a weird choice. Madame LaLaurie is right there if you want a serial killer from a plantation.
