I get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grapple with an Olympic Judoka, Chris George, at the recent Jiu Jitsu retreat "Rolling in Tobago".
I'm a jiu jitsu blue belt and former wrestler, but have limited judo experience. Chris is a jiu jitsu blue belt and judo Olympian...
Enjoy!

Massive respect for standing up as much as possible! Shooting for a double is way harder in the gi because you can be controlled from like two arms distances away.

Yes. He did well, but often times in situations like these the pros take it easy on the non-pros like them. Had he been with a fellow olympic level judoka he would have been more brutal

@holdenmuganda97 Each country can only send one per division, so not exactly the top 22 since some countries have deep rosters, but it's still based on world ranking so massive accomplishment just to participate.

Kudos to you. The advancing foot sweep he hit right away is the first thing we all do to wrestlers. Also, the rear collar grip is really hard to break and should be fought at all costs. Nice job though, Olympic level judo players are like grappling iron.

I'm in the "force yourself to not pull guard phase" and I hate it. I thoroughly enjoy when a high level wrestler or judoka bodies me standing. It's really neat to feel the technique used against you and realize how well performed it was. Again... as long as they're being nice about it!

I think your stance on the feet is undervalued and not taught enough in bjj and I think stance alone is half the battle sometimes. I wrestled a lot in high school and notice even at the highest level sometimes, some guys have really uncoordinated, awkward, unathletic stances and if they addressed it, their stand up would go to the next level.

Good job man, one correction though, his throw at around 1:06 is called harai goshi or some would say ashi guruma. Uchi Mata is the inner thigh sweep
@kitjarvis7379
@kitjarvis7379 7 ай бұрын
nope it is uchi mata, harai goshi is both legs and a different grip, but i understand your confusion as he stepped off the throw so it wasn't as good as it could have been
@mark9104
@mark9104 7 ай бұрын
@@kitjarvis7379just throwing it out there, not sure if I'm correct. My understanding is, there can be different grips for a throw, e.g. I saw uchi mata with double lapel grip, behind the neck, traditional grip etc, same for throws lika tai otoshi, single lapel grip, traditional grip, double lapel grip. My understanding for these three differences are: 1. Harai is sweeping up with your block leg, foot placement around knee. you loaded your opponent onto your hip, thus, a koshiwaza; 2. Ashi guruma is a leg throw, you unbalanced your opponent onto your block foot, blocked using your foot, thus a leg technique; 3. Uchi mata is also a hip technique, you entry deep, loaded your opponent onto your back, your sweep up onto inner thigh.

@judowithkeishin No, that was a harai goshi. The man was just very casual in performing. The leg slipped off - that's how it became a uchiMata. With 30kg more mass, you don't have to make much of an effort.

Lets use some precise logic and reasoning here , the amount of training and muscle memory that this Olympian has gathered is equal to the amount of domination that he had over you plus he has more mass than you. Dont you think ? So everything is absolutely expected here . But this doesnt mean that you are not awesome . Cheers .

I think ur giving far too much credit to a BJJ purple belt, the stand up would be way too lopsided, and it will give the judo/sambo/wrestler a much better hold with higher pressure at a blisteringly high pace. He will probably snatch an armbar from anywhere you give him. However, if started at the bottom with the wrestler still in his guard, then I give it to the purple belt.
