When I was 18, I fell on the last turn of the last ride of the day on a stupid ice patch. My left wrist was broken badly. After it healed for almost a year, I was on the way to a party and took the skateboard. Hit a pebble not 20 ft out of the driveway and fell on the damn arm again. I was an avid guitar afficionado, and sadly couldn't play for almost 5 years after the first crash. Never went boarding again after that ordeal. Until a few weeks ago, age 31. An old friend wanted to hit some slopes over in Austria, a 1 hour ride from Germany. I never lost the love for the board and had it up in my room for sentimental display all those years. So I agreed, and expected the worst. It was fucking legendary. The snow, the wind, the speed, the curves. Technique wasn't important on that first ride, it was just overcoming fear, trusting God to keep me safe, feel the freezing cold and the warmth of the sun once again, breathe that snowy air. Beautiful. That evening I watched a ton of snowboard vids and saw the vid about you being a legendary carver. My mind was blown. I always wanted to be a jumper, but after all the struggle, now I just want that feeling of freedom the snowboard gives you. And watching you, it clicked for me. We were boarding again today, in Mellau. And I applied what I learned from observing you ride. It was a whole different experience now. CARVING IS LIFE!!!!!!! The best bit of knowledge drop here is that Ryan switched to a board with a smaller sidecut radius. I like that Ryan is out of his comfort zone and it is great to see the changes he makes with his equipment.

It was a crazy great week of learning for myself and some of the other soft boot riders. Jordan was out riding his normal terrain today and messaged me how easy everything seemed after that. Very cool results after working on making it happen on that soft of snow, on steep and narrower runs. We all learned a lot for real, and it was amazing getting to try some other custom boards. On that snow there was some attributes I liked from a couple I got to try, so Donek and I will be testing out some new constructions to see if it works for me on the normal type of terrain I generally ride. Gonna be a fun experiment.

Ryan, thanks a lot for surfacing those Alpine boarders and the beauty of carving. Back when I started in the early '90s on the Italian Alps there were about half softbooters and half hardbooters, nowadays I can go days and days without encountering any fellow Alpine boarder. On mostly groomed pistes like we have here, carving boards can be extremely fun and fulfilling. So I hope that after your videos more youngsters will try them and the shops will start having them again. Fantastic work!

Small tip for insta 360 footage. Try export reframed video to 3840x2160 and 80 Mbps. It does upscale good and improves image quality (even if final YT video will be in 1080p).

Ryan looks like figured out how to carve with your 13m board. Nice work! Turner trails are definitely more like narrow East Coast trails. Anyone trying to carve a 19.5m radius would have struggled. Great videos👍

Glad you mentioned board radius vs mountain you're riding in your final thoughts. I remember when you were first increasing your radius for Breckenridge. I've ridden there and those runs are HUGE! My home mountain was Terry Peak in Lead SD and the runs are way smaller so when I ordered your board I went with the stock 8.7m radius, and still outgrew it. A few years later I ordered a 12m and for the mountains I ride I've never needed more, in fact, I'm still glad to have the 8.7m as a trusty old standby for days when I'm not full carving groomers, or powder days.

What were your waist widths on those? Do you feel like a 10-11m would have been better?

27.6 on the 8.7m and 28.5 on the 12m, and yes, a 10-11m board would have been the sweet spot for a smaller mountain. However, the 12m is still fine I just have to decamber it a little more forcefully. I'd love to go even wider, but don't want the weight and 95% of my turns will never boot out. I'd love a 31.5 with some carbon in it to trim the fat! Guess I better get to building and start a company!

I'm riding a 8.5-10m VSR and it really feels like the best of both worlds. If you're not riding switch, I recommend giving it a try. Stable but able to tighten it right up.

Very inspirational video. The all mountain rider who can carve and absorb obstacles and stay in control is just as skilled as the half pipe team rider. the old boards sidecut does require a steep slope to switch from edge to edge. Similar to an alpine set up......ever tried a 1988 crazy banna with skateboard style camber....you cannot edge on that without hand dragging on an easy slope. I think the fish tail skid was the way to slow down on those flat boards before they made boards like burton brushie style which eventually was burton custom , balance, dragon etc or then salomon with the killer sidecut were good. capita were nice and stiff and poppy black sb of death model. anyhow the hard boots and race board are going to give you the most direct response if you can carve. I would like to see half pipe riders start using hard boots. Damien sanders and the avalanche crew had to modify there hard boots for tweaky methods....i think he would have got that tweak either way......so yes the old boards were not as dynamic however they tried to copy them with reverse camber at one point. I believe this was because snowboarding was booming and they wanted to send people down the hill with a board that just spins around like a bumper car and doesnt catch an edge an break ther wrist.

I’m so bummed I missed this considering it’s just down the road (Montana speaking) That lift does swing around a somewhat disconcerting amount those first two towers… Talked to Dave earlier this season at the top of Big Mountain one day. Cool guy… I tried to chase him down but we went into a whitefish whiteout and I lost him Hopefully I can make it next year 🤙🏻🤙🏻

Holly Shit, 83??? That guy is riding since I was born 🤣🤣 awesome riding , carving. I have a 157 classic camber board , if I adjust the stance to positive 13/13 or 15/15 would I be able to carve a steeper hill ? Just this Sunday I had my first run on a red slope , for me was pretty scary, but I managed to ride all the way to the bottom without falling, but there were bumps all over the hill and I was thrown left and right ...😵‍💫🙈

Hey Ryan, boot out is no longer an issue on my Knapton twin, but I'm having issues with my back knee dragging when I try to fully lay out my toe carves. I would love to see a video with any advice you have on avoiding knee drag.

OMG I'm so bummed I couldn't make it there! I live next door by Schweitzer Mtn Idaho about 2 hours away. Would have been great to meet and ride with you on my Knapton Pro 152! Redmond too for sure. Don't you live that feeling when the edge is carving its groove, and all you have to do is relax your legs and the board jumps off the snow and swaps edges for you? 😊 my buddy and me call it "popping the transition".

I ‘ve been snowboarding with soft boots for 6 years now.This year was my first time on hard boots and alpine board.I’ll never go back.The control in turns is so immidiate.Also by using a short board (160) is way easier for short turns

@@RyanKnapton I've raceboarded my whole life (since 1980 omg), and I'm decent, but man, those angles, particularly heelside... Wow! I can't make that happen. I always feel like I'll loose my edge and wipe out if I lean that hard. Very, very impressive! Probably it's more lack of skill (or faith in that I can do it) than a board edge issue ;), but as I sharpen my edges myself, too, at least maybe I can learn something there. Btw my bucket list for this year has a bullet point that says I need to order a knapton twin as I'm getting older and my knees are getting less and less tolerant of the riding position I have on a race board ;). I've had some fun with a wide Capita Warpspeed that allows for some good soft boot carving when I'm too tired to do the hardboot thing, but I really want to try yours and see if that will help with increasing my angles. Love your channel!

Same as some race ski, then everybody has his little preference. I have 88 on the side and 1 on the bottom.

I usually go 0 base 85 side (the most aggressive my sharpening tool allows), feels amazing when it's fresh but 85 doesn't seem to last as long as 87 or 88. There is definitely a tradeoff between how aggressive you go with it (rides amazing) and how frequently you'll need to resharpen since the 85 doesn't last as long. As far as being too bitey or aggressive, I think that doesn't really apply once you have a certain level of edge control, and not having it bite enough when you expect it to where it washes out is more dangerous than it being deemed too aggressive and unridable by the uninformed masses or shop people.

Ryan 13 m of radius is small for you?

It was a long process, but over a handful of years I moved up incrementally. 8.7, 9.8, 12, 13, 14.5, 16.5, 18, and now 19.5. It is a new learning process each time, and too big of a jump up literally leads to failure for most. It takes great technique, and kinda gotta be stronger without injuries that prohibit range of motions... Scaling up in radius always takes work. Scaling down, makes the turns seem extra easy.
