Absolutely love your chanel, your story and everything you have going on. For the first time in my life I im in a period of unemployment and after watching some of your videos (spring overseeding) , it inspired me to start a chanel (DIY peat moss spreader was my first video). I have been at it a month and am around 450 subscribers. I have tons to learn about editing, and am constantly working on being more comfortable in front of a camera. I am constantly working on yard projects and doing home improvements so thats what my channel will be about. Anyways thanks for always putting out great content and shareing your knowledge, I have never been so excited to take care of my yard!

Your minimal effort is what I’ve been referring to my Medium Effort Lawncare. I’ve been telling people minimal effort is three things: to sharpen your blades at least twice a season, set your mower above 2 1/2 inches, and cut twice a week. Medium effort involves fertilizer regiments and some kind of appropriate watering schedule. Thanks for covering a spectrum that different people can relate to, it’s motivational to see what’s possible without going all out because for some people all out is beyond what they’re willing to take on, but they’ll take steps to get there if they can see what’s possible at each step.

For me and my lawn/soil, I have finally settled on a hybrid granular and soluble approach. I use a granular heavy in micro nutrients and fairly well balanced in macros as the growing season starts in the spring, and again in mid to late fall. I have started adding biochar to that because we have soil pretty poor in organic material. Then I supplement with a high nitrogen soluble monthly in between, and use solubles to lay down humic and liquid kelp when appropriate.

You're comment about the prill size was so timely enlightening! I'm struggling with spreaders because I was essentially trying to 'spoon' feed with granular. And my spreader is very inconsistent at low rates, and that's why - the prill is just too big for the small opening at low rates and it's very erratic and inconsistent. I end up turning it higher and jogging. I think I need to search for nice small prills!

Ryan, quick question/ scenario. I used your perennial ryegrass to overseed in the middle of April. Mowed and used weed and feed by Scott's last weekend. Watered in the morning and applied it shortly after and didn't water again for about 30ish hours. Now Thursday, all the weeds are dying in the lawn, but some of the grass has some brown to it. I water about 6 hours gor about 15 minutes. It's not too bad and you can't really see it unless you're right on top of it. I was wondering if you had any thoughts about what happened and any suggestions. Washington State is my location.

Great information, Ryan! One question: If it's summertime, how long can a granular fertiliser sit on the lawn before it must be watered in? I'm trying to find that happy place between work schedule and anticipated rain. Thanks!

A complete amateur here! We recently bought our first house and I am trying to learn how to take good care of my lawn; I am also trying not to be overwhelmed lol. Your channel has been extremely helpful! In regards spreaders, between rotary spreader and drop spreader, which one would I need? What would be the advantages or disadvantages of one over the other? I am looking at the Scott Elite, but not sure if I will be alright with it or if I need a different option. Thanks in advance!
@ryanknorrlawncare2 жыл бұрын
For years I only had a rotary type and I recently got a drop just for seeding because it helps to put the seed down without it flying everywhere. Otherwise rotary is fine.

Do you use cold or hot water when you mix it. I've read that using hotter 105' to 120' so that the dry product will break down quicker and more easily. I've used the Scott's 4 step programs will very little to absolutely no positive results I live in Nebraska so also cool season. I don't apply any other products to the yard ever but the 4 step program. Recently I've noticed an extreme increase in ALL weeds including thistle, broadleaf, clover, and many that I don't recognize I'm not looking for a perfect lawn ( I don't have the free time for it ) the back yard is along a field that gets far less care other then occasional mowing far less then I give my own yards and most of the weed infestation is from that area. I can't or probably shouldn't use anything that could be hazardous to a cancer patient for obvious reason any suggestions of ways to combat the weed issues would be extremely appreciated. Excellent work on the you tube channel great video. Thanks

@smetljesm22763 жыл бұрын
Great overview! Than you. I am just getting back into my small lawn I loved the soluable professional fertilisers for my oast hydroponics hobby. - My plan is to get it to fertilise the flower beds using drip line system and venturi valve fertiliser pickup. I even thought about underground line for my small lawn since sprinklers seem ackward for it. Your information about foliar application seems to contradict the effectiveness.

I prefer granular applications, but being able to supplement sounds good. I dislike doing liquids now, only applying for occasional spot herbicide and pesticides around the house. I can't imagine walking the lawn weekly on top of mowing, and the 8-10 granular apps I do right now. I find it too tedious, but you do learn a lot about your lawn by slowly walking it like "Oh, that weed wasn't there last week". Maybe if I had a nice push sprayer, the backpack is pretty annoying.

Ryan I'm curious if you have given any thought to using using Iron HEDTA (fiesta, Iron x!, etc.) as a herbicide, and a dark green kicker? Based on the the deep green of your lawn, I assume Iron is use? If so, what (lots of chelated irons to choose from), how much, and how often? My lawn is a complete mess, and now on the ferrous sulfate , Meso 4SC, and 2.4-D/Dicamba recipe. Thinking I can eliminate two of them with feHEDTA . I'll leave amendment/fertilizer discussion for another day. Zone 4A here if that helps.
