Ryan...you get it! The band, the sound, the talent. Thank you for recognizing the Sato style, in the pocket, technical percussion mastery. I have been watching many reaction videos to this Koiai song. You are the only one who gets it. Thanks, keep them coming.

Ryan, I couldn't agree more, their performance really opens up the song. When Kanade joined during the transition to KOIAI I was more than happy. Her jazz fusion experience adds a lot and she's one that feels the music. What else can be said for Lisa-X, Hazuki and Kotono, everyone has a shining moment through each song perfectly executed. Now add Wakazaemon...

Kanade is a phenomenal drummer. Her touch on the drums is so amazing. Wakazaemon's bass in this is sooooo good. This band is amazing. Another band that I want their music. Unfortunately, their earlier CD's are out of stock. Can't wait for the new one.

Unlike most Western rock and pop these days Japanese musicians, in particular, seem to take a bit more pride in the finished 'product'. They make it special...

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve listened to this song. Kanade manages to stay in the pocket with amazing fills and enhancing the music at the same time. She’s a prodigy but it still takes years of practice to develop the sound you’re trying to find. Frickin’ amazing song.

Ryan I was thinking the same thing. It appears Koiai is listening, or reading comments on what people like. If factual, I really, really appreciate this. I think it will help the band, but more importantly provides a feeling of appreciation and interaction with their fans. This is definitely one of my favorites from an incredibly, “stacked,” band. If any foreigners don’t understand the term it means group of super musicians. 💙💙

It has a jazz flavor. Nice changes in the rhythm (Kanada Sato’s syncopated drumming), some technical parts (Li-sa-X’s guitar shredding), while Kotono gets you on the feels. Hazuki and Wakazaemon add to everything as well: it’s good stuff. Come See Me will appear on their upcoming EP, which they said will be out soon.

When I heard this song for the first time, i immediately thought of Steely Dan - 1973 - 1976 era. Very easy to listen to, but so intricate at the same time. Thanks Ryan!

I haven’t been this excited about a new band since 2001. KOIAI really is a true supergroup of tremendous talents. But remarkably, they also write good, mature songs in various styles/genres. Sure, maybe they are still trying to find their sound. But I honestly like every song they have so far. And especially this new one. Cannot wait for the 3rd EP!

Funny thing is that many years ago it DID used to be incredible studio musicians that played on many of the songs we heard on the radio and they always did add interesting parts to the song. As for Koiai, obviously I don't need to mention the extremely talented musicianship but the songwriting is also very smart. Obviously Lisa X could make herself the center of every song from start to finish but her brilliance is not only knowing what to play in the song, but also what not to play. Those bass/drum fills were a real delight. Like you, I don't know what to expect from this band when it comes to the song's genre, but what I do know is that it has always be exceptional.

So much attention to detail, and they never lose the groove. Kanade is such a damn good drummer. I’m glad you mentioned Polyphia. The first time I heard this I thought of Toto, Prince, Steve Vai and the P-boys. Just stellar. I love this so much.

What I love about Li-sa-X Band/Koiai is that they have this fresh contemporary sound; kinda poppy, kinda jazzy in parts, then interestingly there is this a Prog rock/metal edge with shredding solos and a bit of experimentation (like the Prog Cabaret thing from "A New Picture" 🤘). Relaxing, yet metal. So many different nuanced flavors, like a good bottle of Pinot 🍷

This proggy fusion sound suits them. I can't fully figure out what the fusion is, but they are so expressive as musicians, exploring this sound almost seems necessary. Lisa-X is amazing . She learned how to play guitar years ago but is an order of magnitude better expressively by bending all those techniques into really nice, technical phrases. The whole band thrives in this style.

You're absolutely right, Ryan - I don't even listen to radio anymore. And yes, Kanade is a perfect fit for KOIAI. I would still like to hear her rip off a solo, though. ;)

Some years back thinking to myself if i was to build a band around one of the prodigy drummers i would pick Kanade. Well every once in a while you might get something right. She is so tasteful while just killing it. Binging on the Jazz Avengers doesn't hurt either, Senri is raising the bar as well.

Hey Ryan... You are absolutely right. Considering the musicians involved, it is not completely a surprise to get a track with this mind blowing level. And Kanade is my favorite drummer too. If you want something heavier from this band, you should definitely react to "A New Picture". And for something in this mood, just check their cover of "Automatic". Arrangement and instrument playing are spectacular. Enjoy! 😁

I think Wakazaemon on bass here is "the mix." It look like she may be the #5, with all of her positive "X" posts with the 4, and her mentioning working on "songs" with them. 🦍🍌 On a side note: @Misa_bandmaid and @Saiki_bandmaid went to an AJICO show recently, so I had to check them out. They are incredible, especially Ua (lead V) and TOKIE @tke4strings (Bass). She is like a "seasoned" (cut her "teeth" in NYC live music scene) Misa ^3 (how Misa will be in a few years). Take a gander - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pl7Xanese7eMibc and kzbin.info/www/bejne/hovEep5jf9OqotE

Just watched the entirety of their "1st Live in Japan" Bluray. It's great! Harder, faster, jazzier, bluesier, grittier than the studio. I'm going to attribute that to Kanade and Wakazaemon. I underrated Kotono as a vocalist. Lisa X has really improved. She was always technically proficient, but she plays with more style and feel now. And Hazuki was having a blast the whole time. She even took much of the lead in audience interaction.

I’d skip this if it were on US radio for sure, as it sounds like just about everything else that requires mere-sub-par talent and the right connections…but, as no less than Marty Friedman has pointed out on more than one occasion, there is such a depth and complexity to Japanese music- even what we might dismiss as only pop trifling- that the mindful listener is compelled to not ignore it, no matter the genre.

I have never been a fan of their music, especially "a new picture" which I hated, thought "Lisa-X Band" was better, and had lost interest in listening to it since then, but this song is great. If Ryan hadn't uploaded the reaction video, I might never have listened to this song. Thank you so much.👍🎉

Is it only me or what why do i get the feeling Hazuki is under uttilised in the band she must play second fiddle like she used to do in the old Nemophila thats why i am so happy she can unleash her full power now
@RyanMear3 ай бұрын
I meant to add that I think she is happier all around. She had to share duties in both bands, but now she can happily support her friend in Koiai, and then just shred faces off in Nemophila! balance!
Hey Ryan 🍻. koiai/Lisa-X Band is one of the most exciting things out of Japan i found on my journey through the japanese rock scene in the last years. the blend of 80s prog rock like Asia, some jazzy stuff combined with metal is very unique. For me as s bassplayer also fantastic smooth bassplaying in this. But sadly with the departure of Rina the vocals became a total mismatch to the quality of the music. i really love the sound of this new song but the vocals simply don't fit all. No energy. No range. Just whispering through the whole song 🥴. I really hope Lisa realizes this very soon.

She was when she was little. They're really good friends too. But she was actually stupid good before she ever took lessons from him. lol Li-sa-X actually learned more from watching Jason Richardson, Tim Henson and Scott Lepage on KZbin than she learned from Marty. That chick is only 18 right now, by the way! Think about what Kirk Hammett sounded like at 18 and he was a "student" of Joe Satriani. Times have CHANGED, bro.

@@RyanMear That's where you're wrong though. Dude has been in the game for like 45 years now, right? My point is, in all that time, being exposed to the caliber of musicians he's had the privilege to meet, play with and get to know, NOTHING ever rubbed off on him. Not even a little bit. Dude is no better today in 2024 than he was in 1979 when he formed Exodus. So, if Li-sa-X could "instruct" that dude... she'd be wasting her time and his. "Sad but True". lol
