Arguably the best reel in the business. I've owned Penn's (International's) and always had problems with them. Probably, because where I live (Okinawa, Japan) they were prone to rusting and corroding (even after a clean wash and proper overhaul). Maybe the Penn's I bought were a bad batch or something, but the Tiagra's are truly amazing. When I switched to Shimano (TLD's, Tiagras) never once had a problem. I remember catching heat from my dad and his "expert" fishing buddies when they first debuted in the early '90s. My Shimano reels are still working, while these "experts" slowly swallowed their pride and either switched or don't fish anymore.

Accurate Platinum Twindrag & Alutecnos Albacore are the best, but unaffordable for most. The Tiagra does have the best clicker at 82db. Great reels just not the best. Go look at an Accurate Platinum. Insanely over-engineered.

I own two 50w tiagras, four 80w tiagras, one 80w penn international, and two penn international 20s. In my opinion, the best are the accurate atds, but they are over a grand. The tiagra is the best for the money and extremely durable, but I find the internationals to be a bit smoother. The best big game reel for the average guy chasing sharks and marlin is probably the tiagra, but when you start chasing grander tuna, I would go for the accurate. I own two avets and they are a durable reel for the money but their drag and clicker aren't perfect. I've heard good things about the makairas.

The Shimano Tiagras are over rated in my opinion. First their drag is lower than many newer/updated trolling reels to take advantage of increased line rating with the use of braided line. Second they are over priced when you compared the avet 50w vs shimano 50wlrsa. Third point any of the major companies reels will last decades with proper care after use and cleaning. Where the tiagra shines is its clicker man is that thing loud. I own several of the major brands reels Penn, Avet, Shimano, Diawa, and Okuma, the Avet 50w is my favorite and I've owned it since 2007 when I went on a long range trip on the RRIII for cow YFT. I have basically caught everything on that reel from 200lb + YFT, wahoo, marlin, mahi and it also serves as one of my reels for HST for wahoo in NE FL...... I buy a reel for a purpose and do not fall into brand loyalty trap if i there is a better product out there to meet my needs I'll buy it. Note I service all of my own reels (30 plus and counting / saltwater) and you learn more about them rather than paying someone else to do service them for you.

I kinda agree, they hype because they sell extremely well, but they perform about the same as the international, the daiwas, alutecnos, and santiagos, the newer big conventionals like accurate atds and avet trx, and makairas feel better, slightly more refined, larger drag curve, any would honestly work for big game, but if i had to choose,on a no limit budget the avet trxs are absolutely amazing, second choice would be the golden standard(tiagra) they can be hand secondhand for good prices
