Information I either forgot to add or elected to remover to shorten the vid: 1. The Saltiga Spool has a hardened lip that is present to prevent scratches and dings. Those scratches and dings would possibly fray your line as it comes off the spool during a cast. A great feature, however, I’ve never really had a problem with my spool fraying my braid in cheaper reels. (Even the really beat up ones.) 2. I’ve noticed that after a few trips surf fishing my line roller was collecting extra fine sand in the tiny groove inside the roller itself. I thoroughly rinse my gear after every trip so this fine sand/salt deposits were adhering even after some fresh water blasting. A soft bristled tooth brush easily cleaned this up. Theoretically that sand/salt could have frayed my braid, so definitely something to look out for. 3. The old Daiwa Saltiga (JDM and USA models) Had severe issues with their finish/paint. Salt deposits would accumulate in certain areas and “bubble” the finish. Not something you want in any high end reel, let alone a $1000 one. This new Saltiga seems to have greatly improved the finishes, much of the reel is anodized, and overall better finished than its predecessors. Worth noting though, my Saltiga already has a good deal of scratches. Mainly this is because I’m pretty abusive to my gear, and I would say that it’s not scratching less or more than other high-end spinners I have owned. 4. I believe this to be true, (read it on multiple online forums) although I haven’t tested it: The Medium Saltigas, (8000,10000,14000) and the Large Saltigas (18000,20000) Share some parts with each other making parts interchangeable. Drag Caps and Handle knobs should be useable on all sizes. Spools and handle stems should be interchangeable within each respective class. (Example: you can put an 8000 spool on a 14000, but not on an 18000.) (Example 2: You could swap handle stems from a 18000 to a 20000) 5. My Wish list for the Saltiga (Hope you’re reading this @DaiwaUSA). I would love some more customization available for high end reels like the Saltiga. Obviously this incurs more cost, but, being able to order a custom silver and blue Saltiga, and elect to have either an egg or ball handle would be amazing! Doing this like a year after the reel’s initial release and charging like an extra $100-$200 USD for a custom reel, would be something I believe to be totally feasible. 6. What else did I miss? Comment on this thread 👇

The Pinion gear is NOT made of brass, it's marine bronze(aluminum bronze) which is as strong as most austenite Stainless steels, but much smoother. no comparison to brass at all. Corossion resistance and strength are as good or better than in the standard stainless steel alloys. Actually the combination of materials used in the 2020 Saltiga is way more wear resistance than all stainless steel gears would be cause stainless steel would have much higher friction and the combination with the duraluminium drive gear and the marine bronze pinion has about the same absolute strength as a 304 or 316 stainless steel would have, but thanks to the marine bronze the friction is greatly reduced so it will take several times as long to wear down this drive train and the reel will remain smooth much longer too

Not gonna happen bro... the Japanese statement is this: we've made the finest spinning reel in the world.... this is our company's pride, the best we can offer. No more variation or refinement is possible. The only thing left is to admire it. And I agree, its not up for tweaking the untweakable. Its not up for the buyer to say "please give it to me in silver or red" or "i want a ball knob", such a thing is insulting, they would have surely missed the point and forfeited the opportunity to share in the pride of the company's vision. It must be appreciated for what it is. And you know, even if it did come in other colours, I have no doubt we'd end up conceding the current colour scheme is already the best it can be. Thanks for your review I enjoyed it.

I also got him a last year Stella 8000 and I gave him a Certate 4000 which I loved, and a Penn Slammer 3 so he’s fished with 3 brands and loves them all! It just depends what kind of fishing he’s doing. On the boat he loves the 8000 & 14000 then on the beach or low rock ledges the 4000 & Slammer with 10-14 foot poles!👍

Here is ONE thing probably worth mentioning, I have not seen this myself but heard it from Alan Hawk. First, as many know, he is very detail oriented yet explains up front "I don't know how they do this", but if you have ever had a fish that pulls sooooo hard, that when you drop the rod to create slack to recover line--and it does NOT work as the fish is pulling soooo hard, all that is left is to winch the fish, NOT using the rod, but the reel itself as a winch. In THAT case, this reel apparently holds the balance so well, that on any other reel, you could not budge the fish, but with this reel, it seems you can--somehow. Again, I don't know, just repeating what I read.

I borrowed one from my friend to take on a trip to the Red Sea for black GT, I beat it up a bit for him, it was a great reel, it has no quit in it, it pairs brilliantly with a Zenaq rod, & extremely mediocre with midrange priced rods, I think mainly because the reel is is a bit too much for a low end rod in the heat of action. On avg I tell people who want to step up their game, without breaking the bank to go with either a Daiwa MQ saltist or for a bit more a shimano twin power. You definitely can’t go wrong with the latter, they can land some big GT’s as well, but an 8k MQ will still get smoked a bit fighting pelagics. I’ve played around with a lot of brands/sizes on the water and the Saltiga line is one of the best out there. Like all of us, it’s just all in what you want. Can’t wait to go to Africa & mess around with those big nile perch & hopefully a Goliath Tigerfish(not likely but hopeful)

I agree, especially compared to the 2019/2020 SWC(I still use Stellas in 4000-6000) when I grab the rod with the Stella after castin'a while with the Saltiga the Stella feels like a noisy budget Penn after lots of use. Don't get me wrong, the Stella is a good reel and after a while it feels great but it's no Saltiga! The Saltiga is perfect for fast, pelagic fish and castin' from a boat or off the rocks, for beach fishin' though and when you really max out the drag the Makaira Spinning will do a better job, it's much heavier sealed, especially against sand and I have bend the Rotor and main shaft of both size classes of the 2020 Saltiga, I would say 20kg(45lb) for the 8000-14000 and 25kg(55lb) for the 18000-20000 is as far as you should ever go, the reels survive more and are still fishable but you will get some bends and it won't be as smooth as it used to be cause the bends result in some runnin' on several points. The Makaira Spinning on the other hand is fully machined and forged and every part is made to handle more than the max drag without any issues. It therefore lacks the hardened spool lip, has an aluminum bail, is less smooth, heavier and crankin' power isn't as good either. The bail wire and spool lip of the mak are a big no no from the rocks but from the beach or a boat no big deal. The heavier sealing which is not just better against water but also handles salt almost like a Van Staal is especially from the beach awesome. The higher weight, lack of smoothness and more effort needed to crank is not fun but it's mostly a personal decision if you are able to deal with it or not. For me the Stella 8000 and up is a no brainer, just a joke against the others and if sealing and toughness of the Saltiga are enough it's the best Spinner out there. only for fish and/or drag pressure hardly anyone (I do though) uses a Spinning reel for, as well as hardcore beach fishing I think the Makaira is better!

Thanks for the breakdown and cool video. Technically a deep clean isn't needed ever year with Ferro oil if used correctly but Daiwa wants a yearly service anyways. Second anglers confuse this as water proof and its lead to many mag seal reels returned thus Daiwa stepped up the service on their mag oil reels. Technically a simple part can also serve the same function to seal so why the Ferro oil? Kind of a gimmick and Sure feels like a service plan on a high end BMW . Penn Slammer lll are heavy and ugly by reel standards these days but at the end of the day no major worries, lots of big fish and 75% cheaper plus I can service quite easily at home

@@RyanMorie I used 130lb braid on my 14000, topped off with some 200lb cause I need abrasion resistance. I use it for European catfish in spots where you have to brutally stop them(and I'm talking cats sometimes even exceedin' 8 feet), also for fishin' close by in the Mediterranean sea and Atlantic. I had to use max drag a few times. The reel doesn't run smooth anymore, fishable but not perfect. When I lock up and the spool is at the right position the line roller/bail arm actually touches the spool lip. I also tested my 18.000 at about half spool full(cause often that's more realistic for an actual fight). I didn't over tighten the drag but I got over 80lb without any line comin' off and after my experience with the 14.000 I stopped. The reel had a lil bend too, but still runs perfect.

@@RyanMorie another great high drag pressure reel for a lesser price is the Quantum Cabo, I have two of the 120s, they max out at a lil over 30kg (65-70lb) but on one when I was actually pointing the rod down and usin' that max drag (had spooled it with 200lb hollow core, backed up with some 130lb for capacity) and then the reel foot broke, luckily it didn't ripp off all my guides too. Then I held on (the fish got into structure) and used my hook sharpener too sand down what was left of the reel foot so I could keep fishin', wasn't perfect but worked

Anythin' beneath 100lb is for me only an option for blue water fish, from shore you break off too much cause you need some abrasion resistance. Another thing is that I always splice some heavier braid in for extra abrasion resistance. What I do is get a few spare spools so I can choose between different line sizes. Sometimes you need to drop down but often heavy line is just fine and then it's just much safer

@@RyanMorie I'm in Australia - we mostly fish pe5 on the 8000, pe6 on the 10000 and 14000 models, pe 8-10 on the 20000

The only thing I wish they would change is that top cover. Why not make the MQ a solid body since they don't want you to service it. The only thing that's stopping water is a rubber gasket.

I have a question Amazon have Daiwa 8000-H 20 Saltiga Spinning Reel (2020 Model) for $688 it’s that the same one that you have ?

Being a gear junkie, I think I have to tap out at the Twin Power or Van Staal. But count me in if it ever goes on discount sale.

Those are both great reels!

Oh how badly I want another one of these. I had a brand new one a few years ago but sold it dockside to a guy who had cash and gave me $400 more than I paid for it

Buy it, easy to maintain. Korea manufacturing for magseal kit sell it plus the tool to remove the side plate. Way better then a Stella or lower grade twin power

I would say, especially compared to the 2019/2020 SWC(I still use Stellas in 4000-6000) when I grab the rod with the Stella after castin' a while with the Saltiga the Stella feels like a noisy budget Penn after lots of use. Don't get me wrong, the Stella is a good reel and after a while it feels great but it's no Saltiga! The Saltiga is perfect for fast, pelagic fish and castin' from a boat or off the rocks, for beach fishin' though and when you really max out the drag the Makaira Spinning will do a better job, it's much heavier sealed, especially against sand and I have bend the Rotor and main shaft of both size classes of the 2020 Saltiga, I would say 20kg(45lb) for the 8000-14000 and 25kg(55lb) for the 18000-20000 is as far as you should ever go, the reels survive more and are still fishable but you will get some bends and it won't be as smooth as it used to be cause the bends result in some rubbin' on several points. The heavier sealing which is not just better against water but also handles sand almost like a Van Staal is especially from the beach awesome.

Also the Makaira comes in a 30.000 size which adds to catch absolute monsters on it, especially with the super high line pick up and high ratio and of course the extra weight and the lesser crankin' power it does take more strength of the angler than the Saltiga but it can handle even bigger fish if the fisherman is up to it.

Nothing better than my 18,000 2020 Stella, I catch big tuna here in San Diego and off the coast of Mexico, smooth, powerful, and the service is unmatched with Shimano.

this. Stella is the best hands down. Service, serviceability, no mag seal bs, and beautfiul design. Cant match it.
