reminds me of a german rapper who was asked in a interview who his favorite rapper was and he was like "me, every artist should give that answer..." and thats kinda the same vibe, even though it might sound arrogant, it should just be true...

nah thats quite vague and incorrect lol. Marketing is a system. Not something specific. It involves strategy. Paid media. Design. And sometimes even digital development.

I love this perspective. I love that idea of building a world around our art. I realized for myself I stopped sharing so much and developed a fear of looking like I had a huge ego and would be drawing too much attention to myself - but it’s actually not about us - it’s the creative work we pour into, the beauty we share, the joy we spread, the connection we make to others. What I was truly afraid of was what other people thought! This gives me so much to think about.

Same! I had the same feeling when I was trying to promote this series. I was constantly worried that I was being annoying or arrogant because I was posting so much about it, but it turns out that people were only more supportive. I keep trying to remind myself that big cooperations have no shame when they spam you with newsletters or ads. So why would people get annoyed if you're actually putting in the effort to make your marketing engaging and colorful.

In that same interview, there was a line that really stuck with me. Tyler talked about how artists should post and promote their art. He mentioned discovering Rex Orange County after seeing one of his music videos and thinking it was amazing. Next thing you know, he flew Rex to Los Angeles to record a song together. The quote was: "You never know who is watching."

I resonate with this so hard. "Selling myself" or creating promo after a project doesn't come easy to me. Sometimes I worry about it coming across as cringe, desperate, or even corny. So I end up just posting a few stories on ig and calling it a day. But after pouring our hearts and souls into a project, I think we owe it to ourselves to be our biggest support. Cause if WE don't care, then who will? We're doing a service to ourselves and to others by contributing our art. Thanks for sharing this Ryan! Really needed this perspective!

This resonated with me way more than I expected. I was also, until recently, firmly in the "marketing is always inauthentic" camp but now realising that's not the case. Loved your take on it. A big breakthrough for me was realising that if you tell anyone about your work (either IRL or by posting online), then you already are doing marketing! The YT algorithm is marketing, your titles and thumbnails are all part of your marketing, whether you like it or not. Why not just do it in a way that feels intentional, in a way that's actually effective, and in a way that allows you to convey the emotions youre trying to convey through your art. Great work man.

This is a great message, this actually just makes a lightbulb go off in my head. “l ain't never had anxiety, l ain't never second-guessed myself. This is by far my favorite educational video on marketing that I've come across. You're original ideas, storytelling, authenticity, and editing really shine. You truly were able to show a perspective on marketing that is easy to grasp and doesn't make me feel like I have to sell out or not be myself. I love how much of how you incorporated your personality in this vid. The Mac Photo Booth was a nice touch.

Such an incredible video as always. I highly relate to this one, as a creator I often feel like my posts MUST perform well and that social media is a shelf to show that I can get that high performance. This has completely changed my prospective, I think it’s time to take a little more pride in every post, after all a bigger number is far less gratifying than the euphoria you get when what you work hard on is well received. Thanks for this!

I've been painting for years and only recently realized that: if you believe your work has value for people and fills a need then marketing is the way to allow people to find it and obtain that value. The view of marketing as 'selling out' comes from being flooded with ads for products that AREN'T providing that value, but if you believe in what you create and you believe your customers can benefit from it, then you can market with confidence.

Well done. I have been a creator that thinks other people will figure out my stuff is good. "My art will speak for itself" BUT TOO MANY INFERIOR PRODUCTS are winning. Trailers, Posters, etc-all great ideas for people who aren't used to "tooting their own horn".

0:03 🎨 The video focuses on marketing and how it relates to promoting one's work as an artist. 0:40 🎤 The creator stumbles upon a Converse interview with Tyler the Creator, whose insights on marketing shifted the creator's perspective. 1:00 🎧 Tyler criticizes younger artists for passively promoting their work, putting in minimal effort after creating something significant. 1:53 🧠 The creator previously believed marketing was unnecessary if the art was good enough to speak for itself. 3:50 🛠️ While working on a big project, the creator felt uneasy about not putting enough effort into promoting the final product. 4:50 💡 The creator realized marketing isn't about selling out but about authentically sharing and being proud of one's work. 5:16 🌍 Tyler's message was about creating a world around the art, highlighting its value through various forms of promotion. 5:32 🚀 Marketing, for the creator, becomes an extension of their passion, making it something exciting and meaningful.

Great start to the series! I really like how you told the story of how you came to these realizations about marketing. It makes it feel like you are learning these lessons that you picked up from around you with the viewers, and you're sharing your experiences rather than telling others how they should carry themselves. Again, great editing, and I loved the detail of showing the poster you were painting at the start of the video, and then showing it up on the wall later on. Nice touch!

Absolutely! It felt so unnatural to me when I started. Even promoting this series felt a little wrong haha. It got to the point where I had to close my eyes when I uploaded my instagram stories, but it turns out that people are totally chill with it and even more supportive than if you hadn't promoted it (as long as it's authentic haha). Sometimes people just need a reminder to watch your stuff. They might have missed it the first time around. A reminder is not annoying at all (think about all the cooperations that spam your inboxes haha).

this is good. love the way you explained everything. you know what’s crazy, i’m a marketing manager for a aerodynamic startup company, i’ve been doing marketing for 6 years and i have my own side hustle. i know how to market so well for the company i work for but when i released a t-shirt for my brand i didn’t market it well, ironically. i just went out and posted it because i felt that if i didnt, i wouldn’t have released it. i failed to market for my own brand and have learned from that. i felt that if i promoted it too much, it would have came off as too salesly or too pushy, or not “me” or true to my brand. im going to release some poster designs in the coming weeks and couldn’t have found this video at the right time. thank you.

I've been struggling with social media because a while ago I accepted that nowadays you can't be an artist without social media and I've never been a social media guy, I've never even downloaded TikTok once, but I always feel the pressure that I should and I'm stupid for not making content there already, but you're absolutely right, if it doesn't resonate with me, why do it and sell my soul, and my art, I will continue looking for my path where I believe it is right for me and not where everyone says it is the right path, I'm so passionate about what I do that sometimes I cry about it, I just need to find a way to share that passion with the rest of the world.

Marketing and Promotion has always felt cringe and to self centred but I've realised the importance of Loving the art that you put out to the extent that you'd want to share it with everybody because you put to much effort to let what you have built not shine, it you're not your biggest fan than is your art even worth being seen by others? Well you got a new subscriber cause this video was amazing.

I’ve been going through a detox/ healing period trying to clear out all the other voices in my head until I hear only mine. It’s a process but I feel it working every time I meditate or hyper focus on an art piece. I can’t wait until I meet her (me) fully. Once I find that voice I’m screaming it from the rooftops.

You did a really good job on this video, aesthetics, edit, audio mix, transitions, shot composition, animations. They were executed so well that everything felt smooth and well connected. Enjoying the double Ryans as well as action + narrative are more engaging than narrative alone. Skill and respect.

Absolutely love this - this has been my journey as well as an artist - and you know what? I have actually worked in social media advertising and marketing for the past 15 years! Somehow I didn't make the connection - how the F? I love your work.

Tyler had also encouraged me to continue putting out the art that I like, and not trying to produce something only because people liked it. I love Tyler!! ❤

When i first saw your video that blew up, i was honestly expecting videos like that moving forward. I was not expecting anything special or like thought provoking if you know what i mean. But after looking at your channel month after month, hoping another video blows up for you, i realised that you instead went in a completely new direction. At first you posted videos that made me aware that im watching youtube, and that how all of this works sucks for you. Then you just start making like great videos that i enjoy watching, and you dont care if you dont get popularity. Its instead a small good community, around these videos that i enjoy watching. Watching your videos is like watching a friend trying to make good videos, and even though no one cares i care because i care about the friend and the videos are actually good. Anyways, this was a very scuffed comment.. i just wanted to get my thoughts out, i hope you understood it. Thank you for all these videos.

Dope video. Thank you for sharing. Creating soul-sell-y content on social media feels so terrible and inauthentic but nowadays it feels like everyone online is telling you it's the only way to grow-- Your perspective really affirms my love for worldbuilding without necessitating viral-trend-chasing. Ur a beast

Man I needed this video, that Tyler clip also resonated with me a while back, but I've always hated the idea of following trends or appeasing the algorithm. Thanks to this video marketing doesn't feel as soul sucking, keep it up man

Great video Ryan-- completely agree; Marketing can be looked at as a hurdle that I'd rather not do. I'd rather people just see what I make and like it. But the truth of the matter is that for people to find and connect with what you make, you have to create and build an authentic connection with them, and so true inventive marketing is a necessary part of that exchange in creating long time fans and supporters.

Thank you for the kind words Jack! Yeah especially in the times we live in, the world moves so quickly. People might have just missed what you made if you upload about it once. It's a bummer, but if marketing is just a world building exercise for you then it can actually enhance the work! idk just my thoughts.

@@RyanNgFilms Absolutely, and Tyler is one of the best examples of someone who markets without losing authenticity. I've been making an animated feature for a while and have definitely been inspired by your stuff. Would love to connect sometime -- building a filmmaker network is crazy important to success and I love what you're doing! I posted a video last month that I think is stylistically somewhat similar to one of yours. Anyways lmk if that might be something you'd be interested in; always trying to meet new awesome filmmakers :D
