Hope to visit some time, Absolutely stunning location and of course what an amazing film and cast! Would be great if the Old school house could be brought back to it's former glory for future generations.

Yes, the location is still unspoilt and stunning. When you get a day like the one we got on that day, it is truly spectacular. The view out over the Blasket Islands, with the sun setting over the Atlantic ocean, magical. We stayed for two nights on The Great Blasket island, but that's a different video and story, gorgeous also...

@@Karl_with_a_K Everything about the film, location - cast - props - and so on was spot on in my humble opinion and not forgetting the local extras who added to make the film in a class of it's own and the revenue it generated to nearby communities also 👍

@@Karl_with_a_K we couldn't find the road that was the village, is it near the school house?

David Lean was one of the most distinguished and influential movie directors of the 20th century, if not of all time. His movies such as Bridge on the River Kwai, Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago, A Passage to India, and many others, are considered masterpieces. Ryan's Daughter also showcases David Lean's signature style, where every frame of film footage is perfection. The beautiful landscapes and the wild beautiful wilderness of the west coast of Ireland were captured on film in a way that would leave you breathless if viewed in cinema with cinema scope and stereophonic sound. Ryan's Daughter is a much-loved film.

I remember the schoolhouse in the seventies, the roof slates were made of moulded fibreglass , the rails for the 70mm camera visible on the ground, the property still belongs to Colombia pictures .

@ivanconnolly7332 very interesting Ivan, pity they can't gift it to the local community and turn it into something.

A gold purse was handed to the locals as a tourist destination but they leveled it. Vandals

Hippies had occupied the village built for the film, still it is a shame they demolished it.

Was it a school that was used or was it just a prop for the film??
@Karl_with_a_K2 жыл бұрын
No, it was never an actual functioning School. It was, along with the entire village built as the set for the movie. Saying that however the structure and design would have been in keeping with a typical school of its time, ie: one entrance for boys, another for girls etc. The chimney in the building is just ornamental, if you look at it closer there is no fireplace or flue, just the chimney on top. It was amazingly well built considering it was a temporary structure needed only for a few months while filming.

@@Karl_with_a_K thanks for that Karl, just watched the whole film today and it’s a shame that they couldn’t keep the school intact as a tourist attraction for the area ? But yeah nice to see it’s managed to survive all these years, well some of it lol

@@TimeEmotion1971 Yes absolutely, turn it into a coffee shop for the summer months or something. There's quite a bit of day tripper traffic out to the Great Blasket island, the large island with the two hills. So it would be ideal to have the old schoolhouse as a coffee and snack shop. The views from it are stunning. So someday perhaps... 👍
