The Milwaukee-Eight motor has four valves per head in hemi heads for a hotter, faster, more efficient burn and better spread of heat. Cooler operation is the overall goal. Less combustion heat is picked up by a shallower four-valve combustion chamber, and more heat is dissipated by large-area head cooling fins. It also has dual spark plugs, exposing heads and pistons to flame for a shorter time. There are also anti-knock sensors on the heads, ensuring more precise firing.
Replacing the 103 cubic inch, the Milwaukee-Eight motor comes in a 107 cubic inch (1750 cc) for the regular 2017 Harley touring line-up and a 114 cubic inch (1870 cc) for the CVO models. The oil cooling system has been redesigned and is a much larger. The heads will be oil cooled for bikes like the Street Glide and Road Glide, while bikes like the Ultra Classic will be twin cooled by both water and oil. They place the radiators for the water cooling in the lower fairings attached to the engine guards. Air cooling is still a big part of the overall cooling system.
The eight-valve motor was a complete redesign with new cases, cylinders, heads, and flywheel. Much of the previous twin cam mechanical chatter on this new motor is gone with the new four-lobe single cam design. Noise reduction was a big part of the design of the Milwaukee-Eight motor. It is still a chain driven cam with an auto adjusting hydraulic tensioner. The flywheel has been reweighted to increase inertia by 20 percent. The motor uses hydraulic lifters, removing the need to adjust valves ever again.
There is also a new air intake. Overall airflow capacity of the eight-valve motor is 50 percent greater than that of previous engines, and the throttle body now has a 55mm bore. A free-flowing intake airbox is engineered for low noise and to intrude less into the rider’s leg.
The motor uses dual spray fuel injectors and the oil capacity of this new motor is 4.5 quarts compared to the 4 quarts on the 103 ci motor. In the past, if the oil was overfilled, excess oil could wet the air filter via the breather. This has now been rerouted through the transmission case.
There is much less shaking of the Milwaukee-Eight motor. Idle rpm has been cut from 1,000 to 850 rpm in the interest of better sound and less heat. For the first time in a rubber-mounted Big Twin, a single counter-rotating internal balancer is used to cancel 75 percent of the engine’s primary shaking force.
The catalytic converters in the exhaust pipes have been moved back, thus less heat on a riders legs. Exhaust temperatures are 100 degrees less now.
Harley says there is 10% more torque available as soon as you want it. Performance at 0-60 mph is about 2-3 bike lengths faster than the 103 ci motors. Roll on power at 60-80 mph is about 2 bike lengths faster. The transmission was also changed to suit the goal of achieving a wider spread of performance from a noise, comfort, and speed perspective. A hydraulic Brembo clutch, a balancer, an anti- backlash gear (spring loaded first gear), and a slimmer primary increase smoothness and decreases noise. Clutch pull at the lever is 7 percent less.
The new charging system produces 50% more power. The big new external-rotor 18-pole alternator makes plenty of juice at lower 850-rpm idle.
The Milwaukee-Eight engine produces more power while still maintaining similar or better range per tank, so that points to the Milwaukee Eight’s mpg being the same or better as the Twin Cam’s.

Great job on the video. love the detail and hard work you put in. I'll be in the market for one in the spring to replace my 14 SGS. Too bad the exhaust off previous yrs won't work tho. One thing i did notice on the 17s is they aren't pin striped like the previous SGS.

I just upgraded my bike from a 2016 dyna street bob with a 103. Don't get me wrong I love the 103 on the dyna that only weighs 650lbs and change. I got a 2017 Road Glide with the 107. It was a trade in with 6700 miles on it. It's still at the dealer getting a couple of extras installed. I did notice that the seat height is lower then the previous Road Glides which I'm excited about because I'm only 5'5". It's January now and I got a couple of more months before I can take it for a ride.

As a Retired Harley-Davidson Service Manager i LOVE the new Suspension, love the new Transmission (though it's so quiet that gonna need a gear indicator !! ) i love the fact they went back to ONE CAM !! BUT Very Disappointed with the power, with 4 valves per jug, i thought it would have the power of the big Yamaha's (Roadstar and Stratoliner) but it's not even close. Hate that you have to Remove the Fuel Tank to change the Spark Plugs and they couldn't make up their mind on cooling, some have oil only, and some have water and oil cooling............Lastly STAY AWAY for the 1st few years, a Reminder the new a few years ago Rushmore bikes had over 8 RECALLS

Very good info Bruce and thanks for being involved here in the community. All I will say is yah, have to remove the fuel tank to remove plugs, but that takes like 5 minutes. We have several free vids on this channel showing how. And I bet it's only like every 30-50 change at best. It is weird on the oil/water cool change up etc...agreed. Ride safe!

Good stuff. I live on the American River, and in the mid 70's rode my first Honda 50, and Yamaha along the river, and we could shoot squirrels back then, not soo much now. I'm looking at the BMW S1000XR andone of the new Harleys, I just might get both for my retirement. I hope I'm not outta line, but I suggestedShawn Smoak check your site out, as he is a techy at Pro Caliber Motorsports (Vancover). I've been following you both and sent him your site. I think you both would get along famously. Anyway, hope youcheck him out.

I bought a 2017 Road King and I love it. I only have a couple hundred miles on it, but the ride is incredible. I imagine it's going to be too quite and too smooth for many people's liking. Many people trade out pipes anyways, so I imagine that won't be a big deal.

I wish I could get a consistent answer on the best way to break in a Milwaukee Eight. I spoke to five different dealers and have gotten five different answers. The Internet is not a whole lot better. How did you break your's in? Would you change anything if you got another Milwaukee eight tomorrow?
@RyanUrlacher

I break in all my bikes the same. I ride them hard right away, just like I'm going to ride them normally. Truth be told, many HD mechanics will tell you that outside of the shop. They are just bound to tell you other things based on the directions they receive from Harley. Just like the oils they recommend. Many use Amsoil, but have to push the HD brand when at work.

one thing you missed on the exhaust the inlet on the mufflers are different sizes the riders right side is bigger than the left side so you are limited to harley sold mufflers an older exhaust will not work on the new bike and the o2's are high mounts now

Hey man! I traded in my 2014' Road King for a 2017' Road Glide Special, Purple Flake Hard Candy Custom paint. I LOVED my Road King and didn't think for a minute that what HD did could have made THAT much of a difference. Had absolutely no plans at all to even consider trading in my FLHR until I saw this hot rod. Holy S@! I HAD to have this bike! You hit all the major points that I've been trying to explain to my rider buddies and it's almost as no one can really believe just how many upgrades HD rolled out in the same year! The ONLY word you could have added to your outstanding review is...........torque! lol Right? The torque on this "tight" (great description) rocket is SICK! The other immediate thing I noticed---lovingly, is the thinner profile of the engine due to the single cam redesign. I have a short inseam, and straddling that bad boy is so much easier, less bow legged feel, which in turn helps the rider "hug" the bike even tighter with your legs, hence adds to that "tight" confident feel you have deep in the saddle. Thanks man for the killer review. Coming to you as an expat working/living near Hiroshima Japan. Living/riding with some cool Japanese Harley riders that add to the great vibe of being on my "Purple Torque Beast" (little quiet for the Japanese market so I've got some Cobra Power Flo's on the way). Cheers from the Land of the Rising Sun..........Jeff

Milwaukee 8. An engine other motorcycle companies have been using for the past 20-30 years.

Keegan Bray yes 4 valves per head. Been a used on other manufacturer bikes for years now. But this tech is new to Harley guys.

Waiting for them to actually re-style the bike. Just can't get excited about that faring and boxy bags. Tank is too wide by the seat. The seats don't fit me all that well either...I think my nads are just too big and get crushed against the front of the seat.

Indian is a great bike and Victory too. Industry records still show Harley is outselling them. The Street Glide has been the #1 selling motorcycle for a ton of years now and that continues. Nobody has been able to beat the Street Glide sales.

My personal thoughts. I LOVE MY HARLEY but i think Harley holds off on new products to push riders into always wanting to trade for the bigger better thing.. Harley STOP and hear what he people say and get it right. I'm sure my 2014 will ride and get me to where i need to go for the next 5 yrs.. but like cell phones its always the next best thing that people will buy.

Yah, HD is is definitely wise to marketing. They keep the desire for riders to always upgrade.

Two spark plugs is a joke, just so you can pay more out of pocket to the dealer, they are now going to water cooled bike's, so many call backs on the new motor for over heating issues. Water cooled bikes are the only way to go, they just cant catch up to the to the technology that all bike builders know, air cooled bike's get too hot.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Definitely a fine line for Harley not to make the bikes like the "others". They would loose a huge share of the market if they were to just make their bikes like everyone else. The bike is an extension of the rider's soul. As deomonstrated, HD holds the market share of sales in the US for so many years for a reason. The Street Glide is the best selling bike in the US for a ton of years now. We support all bikes here of course...............Bikers clearly like what HD is doing.....

Extension of a riders soul, what a load of crap, you swallowed the hype hook line & sinker, nothing like pulling up to a light & 4 other guys have a bike just like you do. Your analogy is, VW must be the best car builder, they sell the most units.

Nothing to be sorry about. Each rider gets to make their own decision about what they want to ride and we support all. Not always about speed.......there's much more than that. A motorcycle is about soul. It's an extension of the rider. Ride safe

Thanks for watching. As long as it has two wheels......we support all makes and models of bikes here. The bike is an exentsion of the rider's soul and each biker chooses a different make and model. For those interested in HD then it is relavant to them for sure.
