This is why Stephen is not only viewed as a National treasure, but as a hero in general. He teaches the right lessons. Learn from each other & pick out what works for the greater whole of society. He openly admits he doesn't have all the answers. No one has all the answers. But learning to make things better is what matters. Hope everyone is having a great week & much love to all from here in the UK

One of Fry's famous quotes (and one of my favorite quotes ever): “It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what."

Stephen Fry is correct. What upsets me the most is literature that has been around for decades is amended so not to offend today’s society. I am sure that people would learn far more and create discussions and make people think by reading original texts. This is just my opinion and not trying to make people see my way.

I agree. And not just decades but even centuries. The language differences bring a need to understand the mores of the times and how similar/dissimilar they are to current views. It can also show how words and terms we use now have drifted from their original meaning out of context. The language of an earlier time brings a little distance and space so that the ideas are not in your face and can be viewed without a feeling of personal confrontation and the defensive stance that engenders when you disagree with them. Finally it lends perspective on how long some beliefs/ideas have been around and whether they should be respected or challenged.

@@Russ_Keith yes, yand there just could be added explanation instead of replacing words.
@Russ_Keith
@Russ_Keith 3 ай бұрын
@@MiaMerkur My main problem with the issue is that the newer words might reflect an ideological difference that subverts the initial meaning, whether intentionally or not. It all feels a little Orwellian to me. And the explanation, if adopted, could present the same problem. It might be a credible interpretation of the text but the truth might be in a different interpretation. I say leave it alone. Generations have managed with the original versions. If the current one can't find a way to understand it, that reflects on modern day educational standards and perhaps that is the issue that should be addressed. After all there is an unprecedented wealth of information on a scale that's never been available before the internet. Critical thinking has to be applied to it of course but I don't think that's a bad thing.
@dimitri877
@dimitri877 2 ай бұрын
That's why language is so important. It has a distinct function. We should not redefine words, they were invented to convey a specific meaning in order to prevent confusion. As important is saying what you actually mean instead of presenting it as fluffy clouds and puppies. Being direct does not have to mean you are being blunt, it means you can be honest about your thoughts and ideas. And then through the correct use of language articulate them without it being misinterpreted and taken as an insult.

It would be great for anyone to debate Fry as long as you leave the idea of winning debates. One could also debate to gain understanding and further sharpen thoughts, and Fry actually has the appropriate style of debating for that. If you lose a debate to Fry it's because you went in to beat him, which was destined to fail. If you are able to play gracefully with ideas there does not need to be any 'destroying' nor losing. One can gracefully concede a point, and score another point from there. Let's not completely reduce debate to a cage fight.

Stephen is so right in almost every way. The debate didn't address the impact of political correctness. And he is right to say that it just simply doesn't work. I couldn't tell you how many positions I have changed my mind on because of political correctness trying to tell me how to think. And I think there is no better example than the one he gave about how the triumph of Trump and Brexit came from a monumental failure of the left. They hounded people who supported Trump to a point that fear kept people from being open about their voting intent. And then when polls looked like Hilary would win, they go to vote and finally in the privacy of the voting booth, they can speak their mind. Trump it is, and no-one can stop me now because no one would suspect me now. You simply don't change minds by silencing them. You're more likely to let them dwell on and double down on their thoughts whilst in silence. So same goes for offensive language and diversity. No lessons are learnt when people are left in the isolation of their own mind

I watched this debate and it was so frustrating because others, predominantly those representing the "left" kept veering off topic and basically using it as a vehicle to directly attack Peterson. Peterson then had to keep defending himself but also starting peddling conspiracy nonsense. Fry was the only one who kept steering it back to the topic of political correctness, which is why he got that applause at about 7:00 in this video, the others had just gone off on their own thing ignoring the topic of the debate. The black guy was constantly talking about racism and how everyone is racist, the woman was constantly going on about feminism and sexism, Peterson was going on about radical leftism and governments. Only Fry talked consistently about Political Correctness.

When it comes to effectiveness: The point is to bring change. Right? And the PC way of doing that is "Shut up. We can't say that.". When has that ever worked? If someone says that I can't speak about something, my first instinct is that they are trying to hide something. Is that a way to bring people to your side? And also, she asked what words we should bring back. All of them. If we want to play gracefully with ideas, we have to use words. Words are not evil. The idea behind the words might be, but the problem is not the words, the problem is the ideas. And does anyone believe that banning the words also bans the ideas behind them? EDIT: The only thing we do when banning words is hiding the ideas so we don't have to confront them, we don't eradicate them. The ideas are still there. Perhaps even growing stronger, and we have no idea because we think it's better to bury our heads in the sand.

What he means by the playing gracefully with ideas is to be able to view something from someone else's standpoint while not letting your own get defensive or warp your understanding of an opposing idea. We are too quick to shut out these opposing ideas today and due to that, we learn less. As you can see by their faces after Stephen Fry refers to their arguments as "snake oil" that they are not as able to digest Stephen's views and ideas without being defensive. She shouldn't be salty about it, she is in a debate and she should be able to defend her position and convince the audience her methods are not akin to snake oil tactics. An accusation like that should roll off her if it is baseless.

My takeaway from watching the political debate in the US for years is: It's all so emotionally charged. Every argument is perceived as a personal attack and insult which only leads to more and more polarization in the end. That's not healthy because the actual issues are left behind without any chance of being solved. Only when the political debate is brought back to the factual level there is hope for improvement. One problem in this regard is the media. Factual discourse is "boring", and emotionally charged outbursts are exciting because they sell - they are clickable, they sell adverts because they are entertaining, they make news a business. Mixing news and opinion (a big no-no for actual journalists) is more entertaining for the masses because it confirms their own bias. But it also leads to even more polarization and less common ground to find a solution to the problems at hand. This is a vicious cycle that has become worse and worse and worse over the past decades. The success that a person like Trump could achieve is only a symptom of the above-mentioned problems in political debate and media conduct. Politicians of different parties don't talk with each other, there is less and less room for a compromise, and problems are left unsolved. The population doesn't perceive itself represented by the elected politicians. There are lots of economic problems e.g. having to work more than one job to make ends meet, student loans, medical bankruptcy, high rents and subsequently homelessness as a visual issue. Additionally, there is the feeling of being left behind and personal failing (how could my grandfather in the 1950s afford a house with eight children to feed on a single income and we just scrap by with two kids and both of us working?). The number and amount of problems seem unsurmountable for many which leads to desperation. This is the perfect recipe for populist leaders like Trump. Politics is a field of complicated problems where a multitude of gears have to work together flawlessly to make the machine run. In the American machine, gears are missing, displaced, grinded away, or broken. It's all such a big mess - there's no solution in sight without disassembling and re-constructing the whole machine. Populists like Trump promise simple solutions for complicated problems and the desperate population gripes for every straw, even when he is a failed businessman without a real political agenda except MAGA which - can you guess it? - plays on subconscious emotions. A hundred years ago Germany was in a very similar situation. There were high numbers of unemployment, the state got rid of its WW1 bonds and other debts by printing money like no tomorrow which led to hyperinflation, hyperinflation led to the loss of any savings a "normal" person had as real estate, gold, jewels, art were only for the rich. The people felt left behind by the establishment and outright betrayed by politicians. This led to a polarization of politics. The parties in the middle lost voters to the left and the right. The left infought among themselves (communist KPD and social democrat SPD fought against each other), and militant rightwing and leftwing groups emerged and fought on the streets against each other (fatalities and murder included). Then the already scrambling economy (think of all the reparations the allied forces of WW1 demanded plus all the other mentioned problems) was hit by the World Economy Crisis in 1929. The land was in shambles - and then comes a "hero" who promises to make Germany great again... does it ring a bell? Yes, Hitler. That's why Europeans were so terrified when Trump was elected in 2016 because we saw the parallels between the developments. That's why we are terrified by the possibility of Trump returning to the White House. We saw him acting like a little child when he lost the election. We saw how he formed the Supreme Court to his liking. We see his behavior in the court cases pending and his doubling down. We see his fright because the Florida governor wants to make all Epstein files publically available. I really hope all the skeletons he hid in the closets come to light. So that everybody can shive the facade away and see the real Trump before election day.

It is also increasingly common in Europe for everything to be emotionally rather than factually charged. I think the media has a lot to answer for. It seems to me that the role of our hyperbolic press is to stir up dissatisfaction and division. I wonder why that is. Debate and reasonable 'differences of opinion' seem to have given way to a desperate need to be right and to tell others they are wrong. As Mr Fry quoted: One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision. Bertrand Russell

There is indeed a fusion of left and right going on, as only the extremists, like Trump, actually stand up and defend what they believe in nowadays - while the rest of us unite in our common horror... So keen are our two-party systems to poach members off one-another, that there isn't actually that much difference between them, any more! They all wear shades of the same colours, I fear.

Yes, Stephen Fry is a national treasure; my only problem with him is that, like many very clever people, he doesn't get is that some of us are not so clever; brilliant people tend to assume that it is just a matter of explaining thngs carefully until you understand: sometimes however well it is explained I am never going to understand!

The secret saw of wisdom is that ancient injuction: "know thyself". I think you are smarter than you think. Often it just takes time to reflect to understand certain points. Brilliant minds are brilliant because they can take short cuts, intuitive leaps, that leave the rest of us trailing in their wake. However, we can get where they are -- it just takes us longer because our route there is usually more circuitous.

Always fascinating to see and hear Stephen in action like this. He is tremendously gifted, and i am so genuinely happy that he is able to bring richness to our lives as well as just debates. Even though i don't always agree with him, I am in awe of his abilities and love his superb sense of humour. A watch of 'Blackadder' alone is prescribed by me here! And to be so erudite while contending with Bipolar totally blows my mind. Particularly as I have depression and anxiety, myself. Just by being himself, he inspires me & others to not be afraid to be ourselves too. Love, compassion & tolerance, people. We can do it. And we don't have to compromise who we are to achieve that.❤❤

Stephen fry has been a beacon of common sense, laughter and reason since I was a teenager. I recommend his books. His novel 'The Star's Tennis Balls', for example, is a wonderful modern reworking of Dumas' the Count of Monty Christo. His autobiographies are wonderfully honest and funny.❤️

It might be noted that the lady facing Stephen was fairly level headed and genuine... The gentleman facing him was underhand, pompous, snearing and deeply unpleasent. He played the 'sorry and woe to me' card in places it was not pertinent. He tried to shut down ANY rejoiners to his words by insinuating that 'if you disagree, you must be a racist'....It was very sad because he is a suremely imtellignet man. It is a great debate to watch.

I'm from Italy.I think the shift between right and left is a common thing all over the world (at least in the Western world). When I voted for the first time, I was, for the most part ideologically speaking, far right, but I voted a more soften party because I'm convinced that all extremism only works on paper. Now 20 years later that right doesn't reflect at all my ideology, but It's not my ideas that have changed, at least for the most part, it is the parties that have changed. The result? There is no party that I feel like voting for. Now voting for the right, here in Italy, feels like vote for the pope, while vote for the left seems like to vote for someone who doesn't know what to do/say/want. Keep in mind that here the concept of right/left is very different than in the USA

"It's a compilation of him" Yeah uh, the other 2 just are not listening to a damn word either of JP or Steven are saying. I mean the black guy is even getting racial, & I mean he actually is racist towards both of them for being where they are, simply because they are white, well, maybe not simply, but he certainly drives down that road, with no real direction either, because as Peterson then points out, what in the hell is he supposed to do about it if being white was such a huge privelage that it allowed him to achieve so much. The other 2 are just pain on a spike to try & listen to, & the fact they just are not listening to a damn word, just like, thye're presence there is utterly pointles, except, it's really not because well, those 2's minds are half of what Steven is digging at, that people on both sides can't & don't want to hear what the other's saying. Full thing's worth the listen but, god, pain. Oh yeah I just remembered, he called Peterson a "Mean white man" Which, I mean, for a debate, that's bloody bnokers to actually say that out loud. And he shows Exactly the quality of his thought the instant he says it. Why would it suck to debate them? You know they're going to listen to Everything you say, & then actually bother spending the time really actually thinking, breaking it & their own thoughts down.

I don't share some of Stephen Fry points but I sure do listen and respect his point of view. What I do agree with is. The arguing back and forth for the sake of arguing with political opponents which makes politicians ineffective . It would be honest and truthful to call a liar a liar instead of a politically correct word salad. BUT before those words leave your mouth, it should be checked for Honesty and Truth. It seems to me, lies and misinformation is said easily under the banner Freedom of Speech, but Truth is bound in political correctness.

You are far more insightful than you let on. Good review!

George Carlin (comedian) has a few great bits on soft language and euphemisms which touches a bit on this debate. An example he uses is that the term shell shock from WW1 is now withered down to PTSD, an abbreviation which you can hide the ugliness of the condition behind because we have to carefully tiptoe around these subjects instead of just engaging them head on. More worried about the semantics and possibly offending anyone than actually talking about the issue.
