The reason the Internet has polluted informed debate so badly, is that people may simply watch reports, commentary, and programming with which they already agree. At school, at least outside the US, pupils are encouraged to argue in debate from the position with which they disagree. So they learn both sides of the argument. All the Internet does is confirm existing opinions.

That divide you were talking about in the beginning. The fissure Stephen talked about. The one you say you are kind of old enough to remember a time when it wasn't like that. I'm 49 next year, born in 1976. And I remember a time when polar opposites could still appreciate the other sides politicians. Or when lefties and righties could sit down, have a meal together and discuss things. No 'Proud Boys', no 'Antifa'. Just people. Of course the 70's, 80's and 90's had their fair share of disturbing things. But this, the present, is in my opinion on a completely new level. I have to say that, with all the good that social media has brought to society, the bad things are a thousandfold or more. Social media and smart phones is a damn scourge on humanity. Social media is what's to blame for this. I'm certain to almost a 100%. It has done nothing but divided us.

Really? I thought the debate was a train wreck. As Stephen Fry later says in this fiasco, "I'm surprised we didn't talk about political correctness in a debate about political correctness." Instead, what we got was Dyson and the female banging the drum of feminist intersectionality and black oppression, both of them stooping to personal attacks on Jordan Peterson. ("You're a mean white man." Then, later, "I'll say it again, you're a mean white man.") ... Fry and Peterson were articulate, though.

I wouldn't trust most politicians to organise a piss-up in a brewery but then most politicians don't do any of the actual governing work at all, they espouse lines but most of the actual work is done by highly paid lackeys under them that keep things running functionally enough for the next highly paid lackey to take over. I think Yes, Minister is a good example of this where you have the politician (Hacker) doing most of the actual campaigning while the work is done by civil servants (Bernard & Geoffrey), it's very realistic of how most countries actually run.

Stephen Fry is a National Treasure in the UK. An incredible comedian, a broadly read intellectual, and a fantastic orator with the ability to speak eloquently yet simply to allow the masses to understand the points he is making. Debating and counter-point discussions are quite common and well respected in the UK which is something sadly lacking in the US in my opinion. The US could benefit significantly from discussions and debates like this, I believe - if anyone would actually take the time to watch them and ponder the points presented.

I was lucky enough several years ago to have a random ten minute conversation with Steven Fry in Gatwick airport about of all things the English language and dialect as I speak with a received accent and my daughter has a strong Cumbrian accent as that’s where we now live and where she was born and schooled. He was courteous and patient and most importantly encouraged my daughter and I to express our thoughts and opinions, she was fourteen at the time, after speaking with him she decided that English would be what she studied at university and her dissertation was on the impact of the modern mores on the English language. Wonderful, wonderful man I will never forget our chat that day and the immense respect I felt for that man as he guided my girl through her thought process. I actually feel quite emotional writing about him. The importance of moments like this are often missed. I work in a prison in the UK at college we were taught that we leave our biases at the gate the people held within the establishment are there after being tried and found guilty by a jury of their peers the result of which is that are incarcerated as a form censure and for the safety of the community. It is hoped that an individual will come to the understanding that his/her behaviour was not acceptable and that upon release they will not again act in such a fashion as to require their removal from society. My point is that we are taught to remain dispassionate and not to judge we are there merely to manage the prison population. A government is elected to manage the country so as to achieve the best outcome they can, they should not be pushing their own agenda. They should remember that in a democracy demos means all not this group or that group and that government is about balancing the needs of many, many differing groups in as fair a way as is possible. We do not live in a utopia and the majority will always win out over the minority in many decisions. What should not happen is the majority bullying or targeting the minority but nor should they have to pander to them either. Apologies for the waffle. I’m old and I’m sticking to my excuse 😊

Not your normal reaction. But it's great to see your views on a very difficult subject matter. I too am surprised to see Stephen on this side of the argument. Very refreshing and he puts up a great argument. Normally centre right in my view but he makes a good point supporting the normal status quo tradition view.

Stephen Fry is one of the most knowledgeable, intelligent people I have seen on TV and from what I can tell, one of the most decent human beings as well. If you want to see a little more of him, I'd really recommend watching the British TV show QI which used to be hosted by Stephen Fry. You will have a lot of fun in the meantime as well. Maybe you can even do a reaction video.

I find his quietly spoken, clearly thought out, contributions the antithesis to the more high volume, short sharp sound bites, from some other social commentators. I feel with Stephen Fry he is aware of his privileged background but has taken time to understand the position of others less fortunate.

I enjoyed this. Stephen Fry is such an intellectual giant, with the kindest, most humble heart to go with it. I love hearing him speak, regardless of the subject. You will most likely not regret going down a Stephen Fry rabbit hole. The debate he did with another massive hero of mine, Christopher Hitchens, is the yardstick I measure all debates against these days.

Subbed. Looking forward to your now obligatory part 2. Happy to watch this again, we can't close the chasm if we can't all talk. Spread the word.. His comedy is great, some of his fiction makes my top ten. He cares deeply for us all and has the eloquence to express complicated issues that concern all humanity perfectly. Enjoy him wherever you can find him..

Muting what people think via political correctness does not chance what they think. It just renders you unaware of it. Not knowing is far more dangerous than being shocked by what people say.

I see a lot of focus being put on right and left in this reaction..... I feel this is something that may be more focused on in the USA! Especially when both political parties are very right wing in comparison to most of the developed world, more like right wing and right wing lite! You will often see everything state side be conflated to a liberal or democratic or republican way of thinking, your either one team or another and by being part of that team you should fit that teams stereotypes! However, i feel like the majority of the world does not operate or view things this way, your political stance does generally not determine and individuals beliefs or how they should behave, a poltical siding is a political siding, not a measure of what type of human being the individual wishes to be! Ps. Been a consumer of your content for a good while, always enjoy your reactions Ryan.

In a formal debate you are not necessarily on the side of the argument you would be naturally inclined to. The point is to be able to put forward a cogent argument supporting the side of the debate one has been assigned to.

When Sir Tim Berners-Lee created the internet he believed it should be available to everyone, thus he didn’t patent it, and hoped it would bring people together. The problem is that the internet allows people to shout their views in their bubble without any push back from people with opposing views. The internet groups like minded people together thus reinforcing their own opinions.

Berners-Lee didn't create the Internet, he invented the world wide web. The Internet existed for a long time before that.

Semantic quibbles aside, I'd agree with this: people end up in their own bubbles and those bubbles grow apart from each other and then grow to hate each other. Algorithms which try to show you things like the things you've seen before amplify and accelerate this process.

@@colinhiggs70It's not a semantic quibble, WWW and the Internet are two vastly different things. It's like talking about when the wright brothers invented the wing, which obviously they didn't, the wing existed in previous inventions like gliders but an aircraft would not exist without the wing. The internet is like the wing and WWW is like the plane that requires the wing to even operate at all. But you are right in that people are being feed into their own personal bubbles by the Internet, it is too easy to go out and search for any source of confirmation bias that you want but the Internet is not the first form of that to begin with, news media in most countries has been heavily controlled, even the democratic ones and propaganda while known due to the nazi usage of it, was not something new by the time of WWII. Historically religion has served as a massive way to feed into the believers and to ostracise (or worse) those outside of the bubble. I'd point out even journalists who set out to do "unbiased" reporting rarely manage to keep their own personal biases out of any reporting on anything even remotely connected to politics.
