In the UK armed police is a specialist post. With special vetting and training. There is a very high level accountability, and an enquiry every time a firearm is discharged. British police will have things like a stab vest, taser, pepper spray and an extendable baton. Whacking an assailant on the side of the knee with a steel ball on the end of a long stick will usually slow them down.

The armed police hes probably seen are the ones guarding the palace ect. You have to be a police officer first, out of your probationary period. That now takes 2-3 years before you are confirmed in post. Thats just to be a confirmed police officer. I think Cops in the USA have 6 weeks training. Once you have passed this probationary period you are entitled to apply for specialist roles within the police. The thing is, to be a good authorised firearms officer the most important thing is to be a good police officer, that only comes with experience. You also need to convince your first and second line managers as well as your head of department that you are are suitable candidate. If you manage all this then there is a paper application, pre assessment, interview, actual assessment and if you get though all of this and have a good disciplinary record you should be invited to attend an initial firearms course, which lasts anywhere between 6-12 weeks depending on whether you are training for an AFO post or an ARV (Armed Response Vehicle) post.

The reason many pubs in 'The City' close at 11:00pm or earlier, is that few people live in the square mile, as it traditionally caters for the Monday to Friday financial workers and a few tourists so many tend to close early. If you go away from central, tourist infested London, you'll find more than enough pubs open into the early hours.

It was amazing experience to visit London, we organized everything - planned where to go, where to eat (no fast food, only healthy food), bought tickets beforehand to everything, it was crazy logistic (planning took us a month) but we were able to see stuff most people doesn't even know about. We were in London for 9 days, and everyday we were out from 8.00 till 23.00 or even late, saw everything including Buckingham palace and the Royal Mews and Harry Potter Studio, went to Phantom of the Opera, London eye, London Aquarium, Tower of London, Madame Tussauds, The Natural History Museum, The Museum of London, saw change of the guards, Sherlock Holmes Museum, Westminster Abbey, Queen's Diamond Jubilee Galleries, Westminster Cathedral, St.Paul's Cathedral, Hyde Park, Piccadilly, Trafalgar Square, went to River Cruise and even went to a local cinema, also went inside Tower Bridge and other amazing places. It was amazing experience!! When I told people where we went people thought we were there for a month 😂 And we were able to find an amazing small hostel with separate rooms as in hotel with our own bathroom and free breakfast. We were sore from walking and on day 8 we thought to stay in our room, but decided to go with our program and it was great experience, also we did shopping and even went to book stores. On day 9 my body decided to go autopilot and hated me for a long time after he went home 🤣🤣🤣 But it was worth it!! 😉Also when we went home I had problem with looking left/right because I was so used to look right first while crossing a road 🙈🙈Please do your research before going and you will be amazed how many beautiful places there are to visit. Also I'm from EU, so it was easy to go there. 🤷‍♀

No idea why he said that the paintings in the National Gallery were 'copies'. They're not. It's one of the biggest collections of original art in the world, with most of the most famous artists' works. London gets less rain than Rome or Lisbon, so don't pack an umbrella. Some pubs do open until later than 11pm, particularly in the centre of London and on Friday and Saturday, but due to increased crime and noise, most do close at 11.

Go there, amazing stuff, and in an emergency good place to pee ;) If you're counting money eat where the locals eat, your accomodations will probably be somwhere away from the tourist spots, and there is a pub, a curry place, fish and chips shop or anything else with a lot of customers- go there. London is actually less rainy than New York, the eastern side of Britain is drier than the west as the weather mostly comes off the Atlantic, so the moisture is dropped in the west long before it can reach the eastern parts. Not everyone drinks all the time. He much overstates this here. Many day drinkers will be tourists. After the pubs close there are many other places to drink, hotels, night clubs etc. Also pubs can be open after 11pm by arrangement because hours have been relaxed in recent years. Places will open when they can get customers. The police are heavilly armed as in parts of London where greater risks are expected, ie terrorism etc. You would hardly ever see them so armed away from high security areas. Police forces throughout the country do have armed response units to call on as needed, but the regular cops rellie on unarmed tactics, nightsticks & tazers if necessary. The UK is not a gun centred culture, even among criminals, gun crime is extremely rare, outside of terrorist incidents.

One doesn't have High Tea at 4.00 pm. One has Afternoon Tea. High tea is the British equiv to supper or an early dinner. It comprises things like cold cuts, salads, bread, maybe even hotpot or puddings. In my childhood days at an English prep, high tea was only on Sundays, after singing 3.30 Evensong, and comprised the left-over roast meat from Sunday lunch, with bubble & squeak and pickles.

A lot of the time they will try to persuade someone to drop a knife. If they can't do that they might use weapons like a baton, or a hard plastic shield (of course most cops don't carry shields when they're walking around but there are many available to them), or a taser or something like CS spray. It's possible they could call in armed police backup but I think mostly they wouldn't feel that was necessary for a knife.

12 is the usual cut-off point for most 'chain' and 'brewery' owned pubs, and those in small towns, but plenty of pubs have a 1, 2am or even 4-5am license. These tend to be the ones that are either; fully in the town centre and function more as night clubs, or the ones slightly off the beaten track that cater to specific clientele; gay bars and rock pubs are almost always open till 2-3am in my experience.

The impression that London and/or the UK is a nation of obssessive drinkers is misleading. In this context, I would also have issues with drinkers being synonymous with "Alcoholic Drinkers". Pubs are public houses. Historically, public meeting places to meet up with friends and other members of the community to chat about and exchange news, gossip, views, and opinions in a social atmosphere. Yes, alcohol is available, but so is food. These days, most pubs also serve food, from snacks, baskets, and buffet style to full service restaurants. Accompanied children are allowed. That means families. I could go on explaining many differences between pubs and American type bars. Just as there are many different types of pubs. However, I will leave it there. Yes, many enjoy a drink or two 😉, but it is as much for the social interaction and atmosphere as anything 👍🙂

Not all pubs shut at 11pm. That particular law was repealed around 20 years ago but many still hold those hours, especially during the week. If you're in London, you can get a drink at any time. Having said that, most pubs in residential areas will close at 11pm to minimise noise.

About shock #5: As a Brit, I can confirm that we do have days where the weather is nice and the sun is out. I will however say that when a nice day comes around, someone, somewhere committed some form of ritual sacrifice to make it happen. UK pub closing time: it's the remnant of a 100 year law known as DORA - "Defence of the Realm Act", which was passed to stop WWI population from getting too drunk to work in the war effort. Obviously it then got strengthened during WWII, & has never really been fully reviewed, not least of all because, when we Brits get drunk, we're not always quite so polite & well-behaved!!!

The vast majority of police are unarmed unless you count tasers, batons and pepper spray (which are illegal to have if you are a member of the public) but some police officers carry guns around railway termini, airports, Parliament etc. There are also ARVs (Armed Response Vehicles) which are unmarked police cars that can respond quickly to armed robberies etc.

12:00 Regarding knives, the police wear stab vests, and have pepper spray and a baton. So the first thing they'd do is press their emergency button which summons immediate assistance, then they'd probably pepper spray the eyes, and use the baton. Quite quickly there'd be a lot of police on scene.

The thing about tourism in London and police with firearms is if you're in those sorts of areas you're almost certainly going to be surrounded by embassies and things that are critical to national security and/or on the parliamentary estate so you'll see a lot of PaDP guys about. Outside that seeing firearms is fairly rare, unless the terror threat is high and a lot of tourist sites that kind of thing does noticeably increase. Note to tourists: you can't get good fish and chips in London - don't even bother, get away from London, maybe check the shortlist for the national fish and chip awards or something.

Ryan, your comments about the infrastructure of the British tourism industry have really rubbed me up the wrong way. It is not all about the money! For instance, the government has made sure so many important tourist sights are open free of charge. Wherever you go, you'll get a fair deal for a fair payment so long as you are wary of the exploitative sharks who frequent every international site and who are usually pretty easy to suss. Brits welcome tourists and we want to make sure they have a good time for a fair price.

New York has more rainfall each year than London. The police with assault rifles are usually at specific places due to the heightened terrorist threat, but our ordinary police don't carry guns as we have virtually no gun crime. That's what you get when you have good gun laws. Our police are well trained in unarmed combat, so if they are confronted by someone with a knife they can easily disarm them without using a firearm. We don't call our police "law enforcement". They are public servants and are expected to behave as such. ✌️♥️🇬🇧

The low crime rate is not a product of the "good gun laws" (sic) though. The strict firearms legislation for Great Britain dates back to 1968 - yet somehow, shootings were already rare well before that. Homicide rate is determined mainly by cultural factors. Some countries e.g. Jamaica, where the gun laws are even harsher than the UK, rank consistently in the top ten (in the bad sense) for homicide. A genocide was perpetrated in Rwanda and Burundi in 1994, despite there being few firearms to hand.

The police in London are quite polite and helpful. I wanted to get a photo of my wife outside of Canada House (The Canadian High Commission) in Trafalgar Square. A constable held our soft drinks while she posed and I snapped the photo. Even the armed police officers guarding the front of MI6 headquarters were very polite as they told us we could not take photos of the building. Police constables are much better trained than American police officers. They are trained in preventing dangerous situations and are well-trained in what to do if a person becomes violent. The armed police officers provide security at places like Buckingham Palace, MI6 etc. They carry pistols and submachine guns. In addition, there are mobile response teams that respond to violent situations that the average police constable is not equipped to combat.

I think people who keep saying London isn't English don't think of ethnic minority people as English. Lots of us are English. Lots of us are native Londoners. We've been here for hundreds of years. And London has always been cosmopolitan and multi-cultural through every wave of immigration not to mention all the invaders who have occupied London throughout its history. The English aristocracy, the oldest families have French, German, Austrian, and Dutch roots.

It doesn't rain all the time in London, we have one of the most temperate climates in the world rarely reaching extremes. The standard police officer won't have a gun, just an asp (extendable baton) and pepper spray. The only armed police will be in high power area cars that are on call for armed robberies and dangerous situations. Police at the airports are armed, usually with a Heckler & Koch MP5 or G36 with a Glock 9mm as a back up weapon.
