WORD OF CAUTION: The Throttle Lock holds your throttle in place (not a cruise control like you may have in your car). Hitting the hand or foot brake will NOT release it. This could be very dangerous if you are not careful. Ie, if a car swerves in front of you. I just don't want anyone getting hurt. Please Ryde safe!
There’s a very simple reason for the speed fluctuations. If you lock the Atlas while your ground speed was increasing... it will naturally continue to increase. Similarly if you lock the Atlas while the speed was decreasing... it will continue to decrease. The trick is letting the desired speed stabilize for a few seconds BEFORE locking the Atlas. Also remember it is mechanical not electronic, so it only holds a throttle position, and speed may fluctuate in windy conditions or as your roadway is climbing or descending.

It's a great gadget, when lock in place you just have to manualy turn the Throttle to find the desired speed.
@James-qr5hx4 жыл бұрын
Also, as it only holds the throttle in place, things like inclines/declines will affect speed. As we all naturally let off the throttle when going down hill, or give it more 'juice' when going uphill. All things to bear in mind.

Wind direction on the test drive ? If tailwind it will increase speed also...
@aaronkoch1002 жыл бұрын
That doesn't make sense. The throttle has to be pulled back to go. The further back the faster you go. So at the point you lock the atlas the throttle (grip) shouldn't be pulling back or forward at that point so it shouldn't be accelerating or decelerating. If it's locked and accelerating the grip should be continuing to move backwards.

"My speed is increasing: How is that possible?" Because your hand doesn't back away back in a straight motion. You back off your hand and your probably going downward slightly moving it and it slightly goes up. Lock it and without moving your hand downward, let go and bring it straight back. When it's locked, you can still roll the throttle forward to adjust speed, just keep an eye on traffic in front of you. @14:37 Exactly what I'm talking about. It increasing isn't stupid.

My dad taught me a long time ago that you use throttle locks only to give your hand a quick break and not to use them for an extended time. If used for their intended use, they should be fine. Most likely your speed increases slightly because you were on an imperceptibly slight decline. Same would happen on a slight incline, only you would be slowing. Their marketing material that I saw mentioned this as a symptom of it being a throttle lock, as opposed to a true cruise control which automatically accounts for those things. Thanks for this review, trying to decide if this is worth it, sort of pricey.

Hi Ken! That is a really good thought! I am pretty sure you are right!
@BikerGirlTraveler2 жыл бұрын
No, it has to do with the road. If you maintain the throttle at the same location and start going uphill then the bike slows down. If you start going downhill, the speed increases. Common sense. The same is true in car or any other form of transportation. One must either roll on or off the throttle to regulate speed. This device is NOT a true cruise control, which you set the speed and the system maintains it by either accelerating ir decelerating engine speed.

I would think it would have to do with road conditions. Technically the bike is if the roads are rough and it's only a rubber piece that's technically holding it in place. The other thing would be whether you're inclining or declining on a road. As I mentioned it's really just the rubber piece which is holding it in place with pressure

Ya know… they outta make one that’s an electronic one, like a cruise control, push button, but allows you to set it at a really low rpm, for when you come to intersections or need to make a u-turn and want to get into the friction zone…. You roll up to the stop light, and engage the clutch, then when your ready to go, you increase the rpm to your desired level, thenyou hit the button and your rpm is locked in just enough to allow you to use the clutch and back brake and have a consistent throttle during your turn and the second you move the throttle, it disengages and it back to manual …. Thanks for posting all of your videos, with throttle locks on CVT transmissions you need to get to the desired speed then hold it there for at least half a mile or so to let the CVT stabilize to its final position before applying the throttle lock it’s not the fault of the throttle lock. Also try to get the feeling of where the throttle lock is rather than look at it while you put it on this also will result in an increase or decrease of speed it sounds silly but it’s fact, Keep up the good work with all the videos cheers for now Steve.

@bugs1814 жыл бұрын
The idea is similar to this: Get in an automobile and stop at a stop sign. Press the pedal down about a quarter. Now place a brick down in the exact position your foot was. Your car speed will keep increasing until you let foot off (or remove brick). This is the same principal. To make it work correctly, now imagine the same scenario but instead of your foot pressing down a quarter, get up to speed at speed limit. Notice now how your foot isn't pressing down as hard and vehicle is maintaining current speed? Remove foot and place brick in same position. As another commenter pointed out, the solution is quite simple really. Let your speed settle for a few seconds (this is the perfect amount of throttle to maintain throttle position), then engage the throttle lock. What you're doing is engaging the atlas lock while your bike is still increasing in speed (due to the throttle being twisted more). The alternative to the proper use would be to engage the lock and then twist throttle to meet engine demand to maintain speed. Not to be too critical but how do you not understand what a throttle does? It's like a volume knob. You keep adjusting until it's "just right". This is what you do whilst you're riding your bike normally. At a stop, you twist the throttle a decent amount to get up to speed and then you let off twisting so hard once up to speed.
@RykerRydes4 жыл бұрын
Very interesting way of explaining. Thanks for sharing. Bottom line, just like a car, it's important to be safe and aware of the surroundings. Ride on!
@SweDownhill4 жыл бұрын
The speed will vary depending in the incline on the road your driving on. This is because your locking the throttle, and not the speed itself (ie, downhill - speed increased, uphill - speed decreased, flat - speed maintained). Also, I reckon it will push the throttle a tiny bit when engaged so it will increase a bit before it's settled. I don't have one myself, but I definitely want one 🙂

As I can see, your "box" has a not completely flat surface. I.e. it has slightly beveled borders, so the little pad tends to shift towards that borders with the throttle at some particular positions. Did u really expect a mechanical device to be able to hold your Ryker to a continuous speed? The Atlas is designed to hold the throttle so you don’t have to. The road elevation changes. If your going up hill and the throttle is locked your speed will decease. If the road elevation changes with your throttle locked going downhill your speed will increase. The only thing you can install that will give you the results you are looking for would be an electronic cruise control like is on cars and some touring motorcycles. This is only a throttle angle locker, not a cruise control (speed locker) Therefore, in case you lock the throttle while you were accelerating, then it will continue doing so.... Also in case you lock the throttle angle while riding over a zero degree inclination tarmac, the vehicle will accelerate if you have a negative street inclination angle and the opposite if you start going uphill 😉 That's a nice gadget anyway... You just need time to get used to it
@turbolag51073 жыл бұрын
In case my last comment was a little bit too technical I'll break it down another way if you lock your throttle position that gives you say 25 horsepower and you only need 23 horsepower to 19 a certain speed you're going to naturally accelerate so you'll just need to back it off ever so slightly and as wind resistance and terrain changes you'll need to move it back and forth ever so slightly to maintain the speed you want to maintain

Your speed will increase & decrease depending on the gradient, as your locking the throttle at "for example" 30% to hold "example" 60. But once you hit a up or down gradient gravity will take effect n either speed you up or slow you down due to the throttle locked at "example" 30%, unlike a factory cruise control system the bike will automatically modulate the throttle to compensate to maintain "example" 60....

Its worrying that you both lack an understanding of how a throttle works. If you lock your throttle while speeding up it will continue to speed up untill it gets to cruising speed. if you are already cruising it will lock it. the flaw with this lock is the buttons are hard to press. when you push down the button you are probably causing the throttle to twist down slightly thereby increasing the accelaration for a while. if you want a better type get the universal type that bolts on for around £27 or the type that rests on your brake lever that one locks the opposite way ie you hold the throttle and push the lever up not down

I have a throttle assist attached to my Ryker... That's the plastic piece that you already had on your bike. The throttle lock by Atlas is a very well-made device . However I know three people that have crashed their Can-Am Ryker because of that device. There is also countless amounts of motorcycles that have crashed because of a throttle lock. Do your research and please be careful. My best opinion is remove it immediately but that's my personal opinion. Great video though...

Thanks Bill! I always love your insight. Very scary to hear that about your friends. I can totally see that happening. Definitely NOT for daily use. I plan on using mine only when I absolutely need a wrist break, no one around, clear road etc. Never to be used in traffic etc. I do love my throttle assist, that I use daily, in all riding conditions. Thanks again Bill!

Good review I think the variation in your speed will be because of the transmission set up. The drive pulley and driven pulley need to find a happy spot to maintain speed but will not stay there for long. A good attachment to give your hand a rest but not as good as a true cruise control. Thanks for the video. Cheers

You installed it the wrong way. You’re supposed to insert the screw first but only twist it one rotation. Then you ratchet down the opposite end, it will ratchet easily. Then you tighten down the screw tight

im not sure what is more scary you lack of understanding of how a throttle works or what looks like a lack of any armour in your gloves? Simple versions of this have been out for years from the alu type that rests on your brake lever costing around £10 on amazon to universal kits that bolt on your bike for around £27. The atlas is very expensive as hell is ugly as hell and works no better than the two i mention except it has buttons which the brake lever type doesnt. The two i mentioned allow you to adjust the tension exactly so you can still close the throttle should you need to. For about £35 more you could have got the machined steel breakway cruise control. Its amazing you spent £135 on this

It's not designed to hold your speed constant, It's designed to hold your throttle constant. Your speed is a function of throttle and the grade of the road. Constant throttle but going up hill and your speed decreases. Constant throttle and going downhill and your speed will increase.
@RykerRydes3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct. I still find it very dangerous because it is not electronic, it doesn't shut off automatically when you brake.

its a "throttle lock" not a cruise control. it has no clue of the speed it just holds the throttle in the same position.

I put the Throttle lock about 3 years ago. It was the older model with one button it was easier that the one u installed. I did not have the foam grips. U can rapidly move the throttle forward if necessary. It will creep forward due to the vibration in the handle bars. Urs looks easier to engage and release. I have a 2013 ST. use the thicker pad to hold it tighter.

I wouldn’t take it off the list. They get take some getting used to. If you move the throttle while locking your will move to adjust.
