These five picking patterns have been taken from famous guitar songs, but rather than show you those songs I thought it more interesting and beneficial to show how you can apply these fingerpicking patterns to your own chord progressions.
Not only that, but in doing so I will teach you some new chord grips. We'll be working from a simple I-V-VImi-IV progression in the key of G major (i.e. G-D-Em-C). For each picking pattern, I have arranged some new chord voicings to not only work your fingerpicking technique but also work on your arrangements and chord vocabulary.

Oh the blessings of being self-taught over a 55 year period.... some deeply ingrained bad habits , but also some unique chords and methods along the way. The one pattern I'm most interested in is #5. I sincerely want to master this method. (I think it's the one Fogelberg used in 'Leader of the Band'.)

Great lesson Ry, as always. Can you tell me, is there a method I can apply and practice for working out chord grips like these for my own compositions. Am I right in saying they are like pedal points? Do you have to choose chords that share the same note or notes? Is there a rule for chord sequence that works best? When applying a basic finger picking pattern to grips like these it is so more melodical. Thanks again ry

The starting point would be to learn the chords in a major or minor key. These are chords that are formed from the same scale so they will always sound good together.
