Hammer drill works just fine for ice augers too unless you're way up north. Gone through probably 16-18 inches with my brushless ryobi no problem. Sharp blades are the main ingredient

SO I am sold on electric ice augers now after hitting the ice with a buddy and his ION. Any update on this?

Any update on how this worked for you? Did you try it with a clockwise spinning flyte?

I did not get around to getting another auger this year but I still think it’s a great option for an ice auger

Like too see how it cuts ice, and how many holes on a good new battery.

I am going to try and make an update video. Version 1 did not work because the auger I had is a very old jiffy and drills counter clockwise and keeps wanting to use the anti kick back. I can override the auger if I can get a auger that cuts clock wise like normal

@@TRoutdoors2021 you’ll probably be better off using a plastic flight auger, less weight to spin. Also I don’t think you’ll have to have an adapter. I’ve used the 6” hand auger with the brushless hammer drill and it works good. I tried an 8” but from a gas auger and it was a no go. I tried an 8” hand auger and it does ok. I bought the Cabelas EZE auger, similar to the Pistol bit and it works amazing! Best combo yet. So I think this auger would work great with this auger head. Been wanting to do this with this auger but busy with other projects. Look forward to how this turns out for you.

the EZE from cabelas is a good value. I believe the pistolbit blades also work on the EZE

@@koolkatken83 totally agree, the ice auger idea was a total budget build with stuff I had around defiantly would like to adapt to a lighter auger in the future

Did this end up working out for you? I have one already for digging posts and love ice fishing but am still hand drilling. Not really wanting to spend a ton on a whole auger set up

For sure works great, make sure your auger cuts the right direction for the anti kick back is all

I bought this auger used on ebay, took it on ice with a 4" strikemaster auger, ran for 5 seconds and drilled a hole about 3" deep and then died. I believe it was defective but seller claims I shorted it out in wet conditions of ice as its for earth not ice. Could you confirm for me that you can run this thing on ice, was hoping to see your video of it running so I could convince this guy that sitting 40" above ice does not equate to a wet environment that would burn up the tool.

So to clarify, seller is from Texas and is adament that because I was trying to drill ice I shorted it out, this makes no sense to me as I have used my ryobi drills on ice no problem, they cut the ice like going thru butter. Just wanted to confirm that what I believe is what you have experienced, I have used earth augers which take much more abuse than anything ice can dish out.

I’d have a hard time believing that a little water would do any damage I was in the same boat will a drill too and use the heck out of it on a daily basis with no issues. I’ve had no issues and I think it should be able to handle a little water

I contacted ryobi and determined unit was still under warranty and I could send it in for repair. Three weeks later I had a new auger dropped at my door when I got home. Got it out on ice and drilled three holes with a converted 8 inch mora hand auger blade thru 20 inches of ice before I tore apart the coupling I had made from too light of material. Next day I made a new coupling from 3/4" galv pipe. This time I attached a 6" Mora auger and drilled 17 holes on a 4ah battery again 20" of ice. The battery still had life. Not geared as fast as my Ryobi drill so it cuts a little slower but it easily cut thru the ice and didn't cutout on kickback protection except a couple of times at bottom of hole as it grabbed coming thru. Just wanted to confirm that it works for ice with an ice blade.

I don’t have a video in action yet but I have been using it and works great. Just make sure the auger you use cuts clockwise because I used a old jiffy that cuts counter clockwise and the auger wants to use the anti kick back.

@@TRoutdoors2021 Yeah that's true. The question is, how many Amp hours does the battery have? If it's any less than 4 you probably won't get too many holes out of a charge.

2 handles and eliminating the chuck which can loosen make this a good solution.
