My main worry with aftermarket is the quality of batteries used. While I haven't checked, I'm very confident that the official Ryobi pack has high quality Samsung or Panasonic batteries while the aftermarket one has no-name Chinese batteries. With that being said, I was pleasantly surprised by the vacuum test. According to the run time, it draws roughly 180w which is a pretty heavy load for these small batteries, and the EnerGUP performed quite well. While I don't regret buying an official Ryobi battery, my next battery will be an aftermarket one.

The problem with these aftermarket batteries is that they are often made with recycled lithium cells. Not a huge problem if they are lightly used cells, but there can be huge variations in quality even from the same brand. I have some porter cable tools, and have bought 3 knockoff batteries. 2 have worked flawlessly, 1 stopped holding a charge after a few cycles. Still, I came out ahead financially. One of these days I'm going to have to make the 30 mile trip to my nearest home depot and check out the Ryobi stuff. My porter cable tools have held up fine but I'm kinda jealous of the amount of tools in the Ryobi line.

I think your last point sums up much of the central issue here. Ryobi has an insane amount of tools available in the One Plus lineup so anyone can find a few tools they're going to get plenty of use from. Couple that with the cost effectiveness and whether you're a professional, homeowner or d.i.y.er there's something for you there. And the lack of consistency you mentioned is the only reason these aftermarket batteries haven't excelled. In my humble opinion. Still I liked the video. It seems we think more of our tools than what we're working on as a whole. How can I get the nerve to say what is best as opposed to it being what I like. The wood and screws aren't the least bit moved by the brand of drill I used. Nice video and comment. Thanks

Or is this some crazy rumour spread around by clueless clowns btw I have been running vanon 6.0 amp batteries in my Ryobi carpentry tools and they get punished, only one stopped working ,probably dropped hard by a work mate, so I pulled it apart and soldered a broken tab back on ,works great again and by the way the cells were samsung q30s ie good quality.
@CrimFerret5 жыл бұрын
It's just basic math. The Ryobi pack is using 5 1300mAH 18650 cells and the EnergyUp pack is using 2000mAH cells. Ryobi also has packs that use 2300mAH cells and amazingingly enough, they run longer than the EnergyUp packs by pretty close to what the math says they would. While part of the cost difference is in the brand name, part of it is also because Milwaukee holds the patent on the use of lithium ion cells in 12 and 18 volt tools and all the makers of battery powered tools have to pay a license fee to them. I doubt the aftermarket ones pay that fee because they don't make tools and are located in China. We're just selling batteries, we have no control over what they get used in.

My thoughts: First, the Ryobi pack is a 1.3ah pack vs a 2.0ah Energup. People do not typically buy Ryobi P102 1.3ah packs. They come bundled in low end starter sets. Second, how old was the original Ryobi battery compared to Energup? Third, did you anonymously purchase the Energup packs, or were they supplied to you specifically for testing & review? Personal experience:, A friend bought four of the 4ah Energup packs. We compared their runtime against my 3-year old Ryobi P108 4ah packs. His four Energup packs consistently delivered about 1/2 the runtime of my 3-year old Ryobi P108 packs. Energup (along with other aftermarket battery brands) seem hit or miss as shown in nearly all other reviews. Sometimes you get lucky & get a pack with decent cells. More often you get packs with garbage cells. Frankly, I believe suppliers deliver hand-selected custom packs to reviewers while supplying garbage packs to buyers.

@@SillyReviews That's cool I wasn't sure. I did not mean to imply you would be a willing partner, just noting that there are cases where reviewers appear to have been supplied superior packs to those being commonly sold to the public. With a single pack reviewed you may have just been fortunate to receive a good one. -DB

All aftermarket batteries are not the same. And I find it hard to believe you used that battery regularly, for over 5 years, before it failed. @@SillyReviews The Ryobi one was one of a pair that I had with my Ryobi first tools. That was so long ago that the tools were blue before Ryobi switched to piss yellow. They were 1.5 ah and fine in drills and drivers but struggled later with with things like sanders and circular saws. I thought that I would get some cheap ones to supplement them but that was a failure so I just waited for the sales and special offers and got myself a load of 4ah ones for around £50 each and they have plenty of power for the more load demanding tools. I still use the little original battery occassionally when I'm doing a lot of work at head height and above because it is lighter.

Crazy excessive amount of talking when any fool can see the Ryobi is rated for a lower capacity. The problem is you were biased going into this, with your mighty sample size of what, 2 of them? It is well known that the problem with the generics is twofold. One, the PCB and cells in a generic pack may differ from one specimen to the next. Two, the quality control is poor so any pack may fail prematurely. Additionally you did a mere couple power/recharge cycles. It is well known that generic cells may not withstand the same number of recharge cycles. It is also well known that one common trade off that even the premium top name battery manufacturers make is the cell mAh capacity versus its current capacity. Lastly your comment about fire was ridiculous. Obviously most devices which do catch on fire, didn't the first couple times they were recharged, so the comment was at best ignorant, or worst, deliberately deceitful to knowingly ignore that fact and make the statement. Ultimately it is your money and your safety so I welcome competition and choices for buyers, but at the same time your bias and deliberate attempts to make the generic look the best it possibly could, does nobody any favors.

I've bought generic batteries for all types of applications. Cellphones, laptops, etc. The issue you run into is quality control, especially with the cells. I've had cellphone batteries bubble and expand after a few weeks. I've had laptop batteries not hold nearly the charge that they should. And the inverse applies and ive had some last a long time. The problem is a lot of cells are mislabeled, recycled, or just plain crap. So it's hit or miss if what you're getting is quality out of the box... And hit or miss if they will last.

Just buy Ryobi batteries when they go on sale. I got two 6 ah lithium HP+ batteries for 98 bucks! Also, the Ryobi batteries use high quality Samsung Li-Po cells. these cheaper ones use cheaper Chinese cells that don't hold up as well, or deliver the full rated power for as long as higher quality cells do. Just tear them apart and you'll see the differences. you'll also see the differences as you get more use out of them.

My tools are used professionally and at this time, Ryobi isn't a brand to be considered. But, to each their own. It's not necessary for you to agree with me or me agree with you. My purchases are made to satisfy me and that's all that matters. Batteries haven't been an issue. After a few kits have been purchased, under the deals that manufacturers and retailers put together, you build a healthy supply of batteries. Manufacturer's batteries are all that I'm interested in using. They too can be found inexpensively online. Maybe not as cheap as the knockoffs but much lower than retail sticker. In the life of a tool, the slightly larger fraction of a cent each day, that I pay to use manufacturer's batteries isn't that big of a deal. I'm a bit confused that a "homeowner" would use power tools so much that he requires a stock of spare batteries, but doesn't think quality tools are important. I too couldn't get through the video because the style didn't suit me but you are calling this silly reviews. Hopefully you didn't say anything profound beyond the six minute mark because that's as far as I made it.

Thanks for watching (however long you watched) and leaving the lengthy comment. To each their own would sum it up. Well, for people with the jobs like I have, and the budget, these are great! Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving!

I'd say Ryobi is the only cheap brand of tools that's capable of doing professional work. I buy high end high end tools now (makita/milwaukee), but did have some Ryobi stuff at the start of my apprenticeship, and I have a hard time saying anything bad about them. Very solid tools for what you're paying; you won't get top of the line performance, but the tools are reliable in working conditions. I used them throughout winter in -5 weather and the batteries never failed to charge, for comparison I have seen porter cable and B&D tools refuse to charge in -1 weather. The ryobi brand has good quality chargers and affordable battery packs with good quality cells, nothing more to say about it. I picked up some of the brushless tools on promotion to use around the house and those are pretty damn good. Not quite pro-grade still, but just close enough. If those tools had been out when I was using ryobi, I might have just stuck with the brand and continued to use them at work.

I don't think so tho. The EnerGUP pack powered the vacuum for 11 minutes. It's a 36Wh pack, so we can estimate that the vacuum consumes 180w. The Ryobi pack is about 30% smaller at 24wh, and the vacuum ran for 8 minutes, which is roughly 30% less than 11 minutes (going on mental math so not super accurate but u get the point). Still, you make a fair point. The best way to store batteries which you're not going to use is to store them between 50% and 80% charged. Storing them fully charged will cause them to degrade (also talking from experience)

Does energup back up their product though? If your Ryobi battery dies or have problems they back up their product. When it comes to electrical it's hit or miss sometimes. @@SillyReviews I should have looked it up before I commented, sorry. So it's a 180 day replacement warranty (6 months) 1 year warranty which I'm guessing gives you a partial refund. Sorry but for me personally, until I see someone do a teardown video on these energup batteries; so I can see what cells they're using and check data sheets to see amperage ratings etc.. I'll stick with the genuine battery for $7 more, for now. Just don't know enough about these new energup batteries to trust them yet. My Ryobi impact and drill set are only a month and a half old, and I'd rather not risk voiding my warranty. Edit: also, until I get more one+ tools I don't have a need for more then a few batteries. With just my drill and impact (they came with one battery each and I bought an extra) I find I can't use them fast enough/the charger tops off the spare batteries before I can kill the ones I'm using. Then again, I'm used to a good quality (imo) but shit nickel cadmium or ni-mh battery (can't remember which) DeWalt drill. I literally had to schedule ahead of time to use that thing..

Some people are just loyal to a brand or don’t consider how brands can improve or be suitable for the needs other people have. Kind of like how Toyota cars were miles ahead of Hyundai in terms of build quality and reliability up until the 2010’s. Now, Toyota still carries the more expensive lineup, but I’d absolutely get a Sonata over a Camry now. The Sonata costs less, has a better warranty and the quality is very much comparable. The Camry (non-CVT transmission) is still likely the “better” car, but I barely drive 2,500 miles/year in my own vehicle. I don’t need to spend ~20% more for a Camry.

Interesting video and thanks for posting! 👍👍😉 I came online here in a fit of anger after today one of the 2 Ryobi batteries I bought to the tune of $50 a pop this past April at a local Home Depot quit working and will not charge. What really pisses me off the most is I use these batteries mainly indoors and I keep all my tools in a climate controlled environment. This was the second time this happened as back in 2017 I bought a Ryobi battery and just after mere 9 or so months of gentle usage it to crapped out. 😡🤬 What irritates me even further is I work the aviation industry and we have DeWalt power tools and DeWalt batteries that go BACK TO 2016!!!! All of them have been dropped, had jet fuel/hydraulic fluid spill on them, aircraft primer spilled on them, have been left out in the rain, etc. and ALL of them are still working!!! Ryobi makes good power tools but their batteries are pure Grade A shit! Only question I have is how long do these Chinese knock off batteries last? If they only last a few months I'll (reluctantly) go buy another Ryobi but if I can at least get a year or more out of it then Ryobi can stick their crappy batteries up their ass!!! Sorry to be so profane but I'm just pissed off to the highest of "pisstivity!" 😒
@SillyReviews5 жыл бұрын
I’ve added “pisstivity” to my lexicon. Thank you! As the years go by, and I have more experience with these Ryobi tools and batteries, I have some info and knowledge to share. You’re right. I love the Ryobi tools, but the batteries are disappointing. My genuine Ryobi One+ batteries crapping out early is what led me to try alternatives in the first place. The Energup battery used in this video died. It was holding a strong charge the simply stopped being able to charge. I have 3 chargers and none would charge it. For me, that battery lasted a year. As described in the video, I use these batteries maybe once every week or two to take care of my lawn and random odd jobs. I’ve had Ryobi batteries crap out in 6 months. I also have (2) Ryobi batteries that, while they seem to hold 2/3 the charge they used to, STILL work. One of them I left in a thunderstorm. About 2 months ago, I took a gamble and purchased some no-name 2packs from Amazon. On pack was for my dad. One pack was for me. These were not energup because the energy was sold out. Bad move. All four of those batteries showed full on our chargers, but help little to no charge. I’ve since bought another energy pack and it’s chugging along. Because of the price difference, I’ll keep buying Energup. Life of the batteries seems similar. I’d much rather pay half. Be careful on Amazon if you buy Energup on Amazon because the pricing is wacky. Do your math. Currently, they sell a 5,000 mAh for $29.99, and a 2-pack of the same for $65.77. You’re better off buying those individually.

It will be different for everyone. It’ll depend on how you store them, how you use them, when you charge them, how often you use them, etc. I’ve had very good experiences with Energup. @seanb38086 жыл бұрын
The Ryobi battery is rated at 1.3 Ah vs. 2 Ah for the Energup. If the ratings are accurate, the Enerup should last 53.8% longer than the Ryobi in the same tool. Your tests confirm that the Energup battery lasts about 50% longer in the same tools. This indicates that the ratings seem consistent - Energup is not "lying". But most of us care more about $ and weight. The Energup costs less, weighs less and lasts longer! I bought an after market battery years ago when the Li Ion batteries first came out and it works exactly as advertised. Maybe a more appropriate measure would be $/Ah, which is $12/Ah vs $23/Ah (using the prices in your video) which means that, for the same amount of work, the Energup battery is 1/2 the price of the Ryobi. Moreover, these batteries are constructed with several "cells" inside, and those cells are a commodity. The quality of almost all cells is very similar (would not be surprising if the cells are built in the same factory on the same machines!) , so unless you get a really bad battery, which can happen with the Ryobi or aftermarket, there really isn't any difference. VERDICT: Aftermarket battery is the clear winner.
@ngtb6 жыл бұрын
Depend on which cells the aftermarket batteries maker decided to put on their batteries, for the reviewer demo they may put a named brand in (SS, LG etc) but for mass production just some knock off chinese cells. We don't know that.
