In this video we take a look inside of a non-working Ryobi Airstrike brad nailer. It has been really, really botched up. We still take time to look inside talk about what not to do and with a little cleaning and lube we get the mechanism striking again. If you would like to go further looking into the repair of one of these Airstrikes please comment below and I will try to get my hands on one blinking the LED to look into. Hope you learned something from this video and thanks for watching!

Very interesting. When my Ryobi Pin Gun stopped working, I took mine apart like you did. The one big difference is you know what you’re doing. I had no idea. I was looking for something that was disconnected a quick fix. When I couldn’t find anything, I put it back together. I did notice that the mechanism seemed very dry and in need of some lubricant. So I gave it a shot of WD40. When I got it all back together I tried it and it worked. I was surprised. I used my Ryobi for a while then put it up. The next time I needed to use it, it didn’t work again. Now I see that there are a lot of people with the same problem. It seems that lubricant is the answer.

This is such an excellent instructional video - it covered every part of what I needed to dismantle and repair this tool. For me, power was there but it wasn't firing the pin, so it looks like it was just a lubrication issue. Anyway, another tool saved from landfill - that takes me to one Ryobi nailer, one Metabo drill and one Festool vacuum all fixed this holiday season - free tools FTW!.

hey gr8 vid - bought one for 10 bucks not working, cleaned moving parts and replaced the large oring on the canister and boom - firing right on. if only prices werent so ridiculously expensive I have a ridgid lying on table too, i accidentally bought a store demo model at a swap meet not knowing it had parts missing intentionally! just the piston is like 50-60 bucks! also need the square ram too and a new can (they drilled a hole thru it) - overall just those 3 parts would set me back the price of a good used one.. if i get lucky and find another unit for parts I can make one from the two-

Hey Very nice work and tutorial. So these Ryobi nailers work off cylinder compressed air ? I’m looking at getting a Metabo but it looks like you need to put air in it when it needs it via air hose. This is why I’m thinking Ryobi . I would like to get the newer angle finish nailer. I need something cordless do to speak. I’m using Pasload air finish nailer until it Ryobi angle comes out hopefully soon. So what lubricant oil should be used for this plunger ?? Don’t want to have o-rings expand Had someone worked on the nailer before you soldering smaller gauge wires ?? Thank you

This is an older video, so based on the thumbnail, all of this should have been discussed. Even the lubricant I used in the top right of the thumbnail photo, but I can't say for certain as its been a while. I used Teflon lube and as mentioned it can't be petroleum based as it will cause o-ring swelling. Actually, the cylinder seems to assist in the positioning of the plunger, the depth and also has some vacuum to help pull the plunger back up into stop position. No actual air pressure or pump involved. Thanks for your kind comment!

Would it be possible to bypass that safety switch? I just broke the presser foot on the front of gun and I'm curious if I could bypass that switch and jam the mechanism back and use the nailer like that? I haven't heard back from repair shop yet. I'm just hoping it's not a $200 repair for a $180 tool lol.

Most of these models the safety switch is an input to the microcontroller I believe so it will most likely flash an error if it detects a shorted switch?

I see a lot of these nailers on ebay selling for parts. In most cases they say there is NO power and they are demanding in upwards of $60, so risk is too high. What would you look for to repair a unit that has no power at all?

I would check the bracket/plate in front of the nailer. The piece that is bolted on the front that holds the anvil against the slide. It can get moved and not allow the anvil to slide freely. If you loosen and see if you can get it to move real free. I would check that as well as lube up the anvil and slide well with a silicone based lube like super lube and see if that helps. amzn.to/3ncu4Kx

I dropped my Airstrike and now it won't work. It took a pretty good head-first fall on a hard surface. There is a small dent in the head plastic body but nothing in the cartridge assembly or firing pin or safety switch section is damaged. It was working fine just before I dropped it. The light comes on (not blinking) but nothing actuates when the trigger is pressed. Have made sure to try with another good battery, cartridge is loaded with brads, etc. but no cigar. Any suggestions on what to look for? Given the heavy weight of the internal components (motor, piston) it could be that a wire got jarred lose? That's my only hope ... HELP!

@@ThriftyToolShed Thanks. P320 is disassembled. No obviously disconnected wires or internal physical damage or burned components. I have tested with a fully charged battery (LED comes on, not blinking), and activated the trigger and plunger micro switches, but no action results. The driver pin is not stuck; I am able to pull it out after overcoming the pull of the magnet. Are there any voltage test points I can check to narrow down the failure?

@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed Жыл бұрын
That's an impossible question to answer for certain. I have shared in a couple videos about the large resistors over heating and seen either the resistors or thermal fuse opening up on this model. It is what I call the braking circuit for the motor. It has 2 high wattage resistors as well as a thermal fuse on a small board located in the handle. Those are known to overheat in some situations. I have a video fixing one that I was given and someone had tried to rewire to make work without knowing what they were doing. I did show how bad and dangerous it is and a better way to get by in a tight if you had to get one going. It's not something I recommended, but shared it would be better than the way some were sharing as a bypass. The video below may possibly help you some in troubleshooting... kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2akn2Noid9gptk

My real problem related to the question about the head shape had to do with trying to diagnose the tool jamming while shooting 2 nails at a time. I finally figured out that I had loaded it with 18 gauge brads from another air nailer. Works fine with the correct gauge brads.

@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 3 жыл бұрын
I have worked on maybe a dozen or so of these and about half the time. So 50% of the time maybe the thermal fuse or the resistors for the braking is the cause. Other times it is in the control board. Sometimes mosfets and sometimes the board has major issues down to microcontroller itself causing issues.

Yes it is the same over temp protection that most likely all hair dryers have for protection. I worked on a Dyson HD01 lately and it has them as well. The thermal fuse, the ole one time use wonders. They are great little safety devices though for sure. They are used in clothes dryers as well and since they are cheap and protect against overcurrent as well as over heat they are in lots of devices. And yeah, I have seen some things that people do that make your head spin. The P320 repair attempt in this video is a good example. On top of that, it is someone on youtube showing how to do that as a fix, omg!
