As someone else mentioned, the Steve Bull stand was built behind the famous sloping Molineux Street Stand, which allowed demolition to take place in close season; of course, this resulted in the new stand being about 50 yards from the pitch! Was kind of rectified when the built the new Billy Wright Stand nearer the pitch than the previous stand. PS, the open stand in the corner is known to some as the Gene Kelly Stand, as they're 'singing in the rain'! Particularly true for the Newcastle game!
@limedickandrew601610 ай бұрын
I always used to go to the North Stand, that is the smaller of the two stands behind the goal. Had to walk down the road from the subway to get there and can remember the construction of the new stand on the other side, i.e. my right on the way to the North Stand. Even then I realised how distant it will be from the pitch. It was a very curious sight those games in the 80s.

Great video Ry. I’m a season ticket holder in the Steve Bull stand. I travel up from Southampton for every home game. Last year I did a stadium tour. Every now and again they add a bit on where they invite an old player as a guest who you have tea/coffee and snacks with at the end. On my tour we had Jim McCalliog. Absolutely fantastic, you could ask him anything, nothing was off limits. Told some great stories.

Top video mate. Not sure if he mentioned the Honved match in 1954? Wolves played Hungarian side Honved who had an unbelievable side that consisted of all of the Hungary national side pretty much, that Hungarian side beat England 7-1 at Wembley not long before. So we played Honved in a floodlit friendly at Molineux, beat them 3-2 and that was the game that pioneered the creation of the European Cup, now the Champions League. So Wolves are half the reason that the Champions League exists! Another fun fact for you😅😂

Awesome video of our hometown club which as i always point out to away fans is in the heart of the city centre unlike most other clubs. Didn't realise about the roses untill watching this. And think its been pointed out but the gap to the pitch is down to a stadium revamp in the 70's that failed and crippled the club financially right through to the early 90's. There's a park not a massive distance from Molineux where Wolves 1st played at.

If you want to know why the big gap from pitch to side stands, you only have to look at some videos of Wolves home matches in the 1980s. The new stand built in 1979, known then as the John Ireland Stand, now the Steve Bull Stand, was built on the other side of the road (no idea what the road was called). Then they demolished the old stand which was between the new stand and the pitch, leaving a huge gap. In the 90s when Molinuex desperately needed rebuilding, the new stands were shifted toward the John Ireland/Steve Bull stand, thus leaving a big gap to pitch for both side stands.

@@RysFootyParadise What is now the Steve Bull stand was built in the late 70s, behind the old Molineux St stand before it was demolished. This was the first stage in a plan to build a new stadium further away from the Waterloo Road, as the old stadium was very close to the road. However this first stand ended up bankrupting the club and they very nearly went out of existence in the mid 80s. After Sir Jack Hayward bought the club the other 3 stands were rebuilt in the early 90s. I'm not sure why they kept large gaps between the stands and pitch though. The North Bank (Stan Cullis stand) was rebuilt again about 10 years ago with a bigger 2 tier design closer to the pitch.
