I'm Swedish too, and Rythian's got it totally wrong! Rhyming slang is supposed to be referential in an ingroup - outgroup sort of way, using the whole rhyme ruins it. Of course it's incomprehensible until you learn it, but so is every other language or slang!

It's like the French speaking backwards.. i.e. Femme becomes mef... Which I think is worse for foreigners than rhyming😂

@@capulcinka I had no idea they do that, that sounds crazy! But pretty fun.

On one hand, I like Rythian's crusade against cockney rhyming slang, on the other hand I like how it confuses the Swedes

Its just a very localised slang where a couple words crept into the normal Vocab. Rhyming slang doesn't exist as much anymore anyways, its a lot more patois/patwa based slang these days

Cockney rhyming slang is an example of a 'cant', that is a form of slang that is _supposed_ to be confusing to outsiders. It's like a code; you're _not_ supposed to use the whole rhyme, just 'china,' 'apples,' 'butchers,' 'bubble,' 'trouble,' 'grandfather,' 'berk,' etc. If you don't know what those mean, that's the point.

The purpose of cockney rhyming slang is to distinguish between ingroup and outgroup, so it actually is xenophobic

The whole point is to drop the rhyme, to stop anyone listening in - usually the police. The east end of london has always been quite a deprived area

Right back at you, Rythian! As far as I've been told and experienced, there's neither a rhyme (hehe) or reason to whether a word is "en" or "ett" in Swedish, and us poor bastards to the east of yous need to be figuring that shite out!

As a Canadian, I sympathize with Rythian. I speak "english" and I have no idea what Kristy or Bryony said. How are Apple and pairs easier to say than stairs? Also, why do you need a confusing slang for stairs in the first place.

Rhyming slang is *supposed* to be incomprehensible to anyone who doesn't know it. The entire point is to filter "outsiders" from understanding what you're saying.

...alright, that's specifically me being called out. When communicating with the family back in Scotland, I tend to use a lot of really awful slang/jargon, and do often just shorten things up. Very often, just mentioning oh, I've had a bit of a barney, and the like. But, then, I never claimed to speak *good* English. AND I NEVER SHALL!

The point of slang is to reaffirm tribal bonds to identify against outsiders. So yes slang is xenophobic.

Don't ever let Rythian hear Australian slang, jeez. (Which, by the way, is also very intentionally parochial and exclusionary.) ... Or generational meme slang, which is poggers and also no cap fr fr

Its really simple. Do you say init, cos, fam, lol, bro, or any other slang word? If yes, then using Barney for Trouble is perfectly legitimate. Barney is slang for Barney Rubble, which is itself cockney rhyming slang for Trouble. Technically, cockney rhyming slang is a language, slang variants exist in most languages. For instance. If you call someone a Berk, they probably won't mind. But they will mind if you call them a Berkeley Hunt!

If you really think cutting something short is the same as a substitution then you've obviously never had a special request at a cheap restaurant.
