Great video! Mizoguchi is definitely one of the biggest Ryu clones. It's not just the special moves, Mizoguchi even shares Ryu's axe kick. However, I feel that Ryo Sakazaki from SNK's Art of Fighting/King of Fighters is the bigger Ryu clone as Ryo is only one letter change from Ryu, their special moves are near identical, their basic attacks are similar, and they both strive to perfect their martial art. Mizoguchi actually wants to retire from fighting and live a simple life, but he keeps getting pulled back in by the chinese mafia. He is also associated with the tiger. On the other hand, Ryu and Ryo are both represented by the dragon (both of their names mean dragon), and they are also considered rivals in crossover games (they both share a special intro in the Capcom vs SNK games for example). IMO, even without the headband, Ryo is the closest equivalent you can get to Ryu simply because both characters share the same creators. Who better to create a clone then the original creators?

Takashi Nishiyama The man who Created Ryu and Ken (and Street Fighter) quit Capcom during hte making of SFII and went to SNK where he created Ryo, Robert, and Yuri. He also created Terry, Joe, and Andy and created Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury, and King of Fighters. He later came back made Street Fighter IV. He's the man who created the genre, then came back and rebirthed it after it died. Man deserves more thanks. Indirectly Masahiro Sakurai worked for him in the early 80s making Side Scroller beat em ups. With that he went and made Mario. Honorable mention; not a clone, but influence at least, Kenshi's alternate costume from MKDA. Oh and Kobra from MKD/MKA. Everyone says he's a Ken Masters clone, so him too.

Akira is basically the Ryu of Virtua Fighter, and to be honest, Akira would get along with Ryu pretty well thanks to Project x Zone 2.
@maninredhelm2 ай бұрын
Akira was basically a last second Ryu re-skin mod, which they did because one of the characters was doing really poorly in testing and nobody was picking him. The change was made so late that the original design, a Saudi Arabian, was still present in all the promotional material and even the arcade cabinet artwork. They also had a second re-design option for him in which he looked more like Kazuya from Tekken (before Tekken existed), but they went with the Ryu clone design instead. I really wish they'd at least permanently retired the white gi outfit in subsequent games. People still think he's a karate guy instead of a kung fu guy, all because they panicked right before the first game's release and made him look like Ryu. Akira was such an awkward and unrewarding character to play in VF1 if you were expecting Ryu that I think he may have caused some people to never come back after wasting a quarter on him, although the game still went on to be a success.

Should've mentioned Flying Dragon to see if they had a clone

Yeah Jago's a Shoto-type, but him being kind of a ninja makes him standout a lot. Akira, visually would be the biggest Ryu Clone, but mechanically, is so far removed from Ryu, that he doesn't even do Karate at all. Liu Kang is mechanically kind of a Shoto(more like Sagat)he's clearly a Bruce Lee homage, which is it's own archetype in the genre. Ryo's probably the best bet moveset and clothing wise, but he's just unique enough like you mentioned.

Idk if this has been stated, but Ryu is based off a real life martial artist who was actually Korean but created the Kyokushin Karate style, so TECHNICALLY Han Baedal might be the #1 clone 😂

I imagine Akuma walking into multiple fighting games looking for Ryu. Akuma: Fight me, Ryu! Sol Badguy: Wrong game, pal. I'm Sol. Street Fighter's over there. Besides, I use a sword. Akuma: Too many damn shoto characters! Every time! Sol Badguy: Aren't you a shoto character? Akuma: 🤔 hmmm.... I didn't think about that.

@@phantomgamer4463 1: he looks like Rambo who ditched weapons & knives to learn karate with a boomerang. 2: Hayate unlike Ryu self taught himself fu’ken which is karate with a boomerang.
