12:57 I think most people do this. I’m pretty sure it’s because the f and v sounds are actually the same exact sound, except for the fact v is voiced and f is voiceless. When you say “have to” the v sound is incredibly close to the t sound in the next word, and since t is a voiceless sound, it feels more natural to use the voiceless f sound instead of v. It’s actually incredibly difficult to say it with a v sound without spacing out the words or changing the t to a d.

"have to" turning to "haff-tuh" is because the t is voiceless so the v also becomes voiceless in anticipation, but a voiceless v is an f.

You can, but according to the level viewer you're forced back down at the end - where you still need Yoshi for the final jump but no longer have him if you went up there. So no cheese, unfortunately. Seems like the creator knew you could get there, though, as he stashed 3 1-ups in a little opening up there.

Regarding "hafta do it:" it's a uniquely English construction because in English, we split our verbs into two words. Most people know a verb is an action word - play, run, jump. However, in English, "to do" (to play, to run, to jump) is the full verb. Specifically it's called the "infinitive" form of the verb, which most native English speakers probably only know if they took a foreign language class. So "to jump" or "to play" is actually the full verb, until you conjugate it - I jump, she jumps. There's a grammatical "error" called a "split infinitive," which is exactly what it sounds like: splitting the infinitive verb up in a sentence. Often, this happens when the speaker places a word between "to" and the rest of the verb. The most famous example is "to boldly go" from Star Trek. It's technically incorrect. You shouldn't split "to" from "go." Instead you should say "to go boldly." However, as an English teacher, I'd argue as long as a speaker is understood (and a listener understands), language is working as intended, even if it's "wrong" Interestingly, languages like French and Spanish don't have this split verb: in French, "to go" is "aller," one word. So when speaking French, the phrase "I want to go" would only have three words, not four; je voudrais aller. A Spanish example: "to play" is jugar. I want to play = Yo quiero jugar. It's not possible to split an infinitive in these languages, like with the "to boldly go" example. When you say "I wanna" (want to) or "I'm gonna" (going to) you're attaching the "to" from the following verb to the previous word, and leaving off the second half of the verb. For example, "wanna" might mean "want" + "to (do)" where (do) is often implied & left off. So when you say "I hafta" in English, it's implying a second half of a verb. One reason it might feel strange is because "to" isn't really a word in that example. It's half of a verb. "Hey, Ryu, do you want to go?" "I don't wanna go" (want + "to go") "but you hafta" (have + to + implied "go"). Strangely, this also means ending a sentence on the word "to" isn't correct either. "I don't want to" ends your sentence in the middle of a verb. Want "to what?" To bike? To play? To learn? One reason "hafta" and "gonna" and "wanna" exist is to shorthand a verb for convenience. "I don't want to go" becomes "I don't wanna." The sentence still feels complete because "don't" is still a verb. But all that's left of the infinitive verb is a vestigial "to"
@FieryLight
@FieryLight 8 ай бұрын
Pretty sure he was just talking about how we naturally use the "f" sound instead of the "v" sound. And the reason for this is that "v" is a voiced (vibrating) sound and "t" (the first sound in "to) is voiceless (without vibration) so we say "hafta" instead of "have to" to match the vibration. If you want to learn more about this, you can search online for "voice assimilation".

The normal factor price for 10 meals a week is 124.25 and I guess that's for only 10 meals. If you pay that amount are you only getting 124.25 for 10 meals the whole month? 124.25 x 4 weeks in a month is estimated to 500.00 a month for 40 meals. Unless it's 124.25 for 40 meals. 124.25 for 10 meals is not worth it at all.

It has to do with the way sounds are formed. It’s very hard to say a voiced sound (like v) immediately followed by a voiceless sound (like t), so one sound has to change to make “have to” easier to say. Usually people change v to f but you could also fix it by pronouncing the t more like a d.
