Ryukin Goldfish Tank with new Vallisneria gigantea

The Vallisneria gigantea did not grow that good after medication a year ago. I have just replanted more of it with more sand, fertilizer and stronger lighting. It looks quite good now and hopefully it will stay and grow.
Will plant more plants on the left side of the tank later.

Beautiful , it looks so amazing. I was looking for an inspiration for my new goldfish tank and I think I have found it right now! The fishes don't eat or destroy the plant? I knew that for goldfish the best option is Echinodorus or Cryptocoryna but I didn' t know about Valisneria, I love this plant. How big is the layer of sand in your aquarium, did you use some other substrate under the plant?

Thanks! I just love vallisneria gigantean. I would ordered online full grown vallisneria gigantean and plant them in the tank, so they cannot be easily destroy by the fishes. Plant a least 3 to 4 bundle together in one bunch. The sand layer should be at least 3 to 4 inches deep. I would only white sandy sand.

Kim KT thank you. 3 to 4 inches it's a lot, I wonder how do you keep it clean, they say that sand with goldfish isn't very easy to maintain. It would be very helpful to see how do you do water changes and clean the sand. Thank you, bye ☺

3 to 4 inches only at the spot where Vallisneria gigantea to be plant. The rest 1 to 2 inches. From my opinion, sand with goldfish is the best option. The dirt stay on the surface of the tank and you can remove and suck them out with a water hose. Goldfishes do produce lot of waste, that why you need strong filter system. I used two Tetra EX 800 Plus for this tank. They are not expensive and quite easy to maintain.

Kim KT ok, thank you for answering so quickly. I would like to ask you just one more question from your experience, how often and how much water do you change? People often do big water changes like 90 % once in a week but I 'm not sure if it's good when you have valisneria, I remember I had this little tipe of valisneria and it tended to break while there wasn't enough water ( during water change).

I do normally a 30 to 40% water change weekly. It is also have to depend on the size of the tank and filtration system. I am strongly against a 90% water change, because it will shock the fishes and give them stress. I would prefer a 30% water change twice a week instead 90% once a week. When you do a 90% water change, you have to be very precise with the temperature. 90% water change should only be done after medication.
