Ever wondered what it would sound like to randomly shred on a drum kit with 5 Remo Rototoms? A lot like this. 6/8/10/12/16 plus a 22x16 premier kick and a 6x14 mapex snare.

I feel like you could possibly build some sort of shell for them even like the 6, 8, 10 sets I have been seeing I feel like you could build like a "sound box" to put around underneath them to just resonate with the toms as you strike kind of like the sound board in a piano or something. I ran into these randomly online looking for possible pieces to use for building a compact suitcase drum set that still has a lot of aspects to it like multiple toms. Some 3 piece Roto Toms started showing up and seemed like they could fit the bill even being more affordable for what I want. But then the ease of tuning them even in the midst's of a piece after a strike appeals greatly to me for like modern neoclassical music. I just wish I could find the 12 in up as easily as the 6, 8, 10 three piece sets. I think if I got one of those and added a 12 and 14 I'd be happy with that low end, but I would rather maybe have 8, 10, 12 and then add a 14 and 16. Thought I'd share my thought about just adding a resonate box with some decent wood underneath them though, I think that could get a decent result although may be still a bit in between the normal Roto sound and the typical Tom shell sound.

They made some type of plastic shells for them at one point. They just kind of clipped on and rotated with the rest of it. I’ve seen them around but they’re sort of rare and always more expensive. I think you could probably figure a way to make your own.

Really cool video! I've wanted to try using roto toms for awhile now, but I wasn't sure if it would work with the style my band plays in. We mostly play between Doom Metal and Sleaze rock. This video showed me though, that it could be done!

The key for minimal mic mixing is all about parallel compression to get the things to fit in the audio. KZbin did alright with theirs on this
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t know the first thing about parallel compression and I am certain I don’t have any gear or programs that will facilitate that intentionally if I did. 👍🏼

@@RyanAlexanderBloom not a problem at all. I'm in a similar state. Just saying if there's anything that could have benefited the Mic setup that's it. KZbin's compression did alright.

did they ever make a bass drum size roto tom
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 4 жыл бұрын
femaledeer the largest in their catalog has always been 18” I think. You could get it with a plexiglass looking “shell” but mounting it in kick position would be a challenge. I’m sure it’s possible... but then you’d have to think of a way to mount the pedal. It might work as a jazz style kick with a significant amount of effort.
@femaledeer
@femaledeer 4 жыл бұрын
@@RyanAlexanderBloom I have seen I video of someone who mounted it as a bass drum, but it did not look like it was full size. I think the bass drum in the video kind of overpowers the sound of the toms.
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 4 жыл бұрын
femaledeer I only see one obvious video like that and yeah it looks like a 14” and I have no idea what they’ve mounted it on. I’m sure it would sound better with a kick drum specific head and the largest available size. I think it’s Pearl who makes the travel kit with no shells. That has a kick drum that is sort of like a Rototom in that it is just one head, but it doesn’t rotate, of course. Might pair well with a Roto-kit though.

The first drummer to use a full Roto tom kit including 2 18’ roto bass drums was Louie Bellson He recorded a live album using the kit back in 1976. There is a pic on the cover “The Louie Bellson 7” I have the album somewhere in my archives!!

This is pretty representative of what they really sound like. Mine and everyone else’s that I’ve ever heard. I don’t know what heads or mics he had, but if they sounded better that’s some kind of engineering wizardry. Rotos always sound more dead and quieter than people assume they will.

I just bought a pair off of Amazon. The first thing I noticed they were way too heavy that need be so that means nobody has evolved these drums. the second is I cant find a decent spot to mount them and since they are so heavy you need a wide spread on the stand. Guess I'll be selling them soon.
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 3 жыл бұрын
The weight is a feature, they sound better. The stand they came on is the worst of at least 4 mounting methods.

I don’t normally use Evans too much but I’ve not bought a new head in a couple years now and this is the best condition snare head I had laying around. I really do need to rehead with fresh, but I’m cheap, lazy, and there’s no good music store in my town.
