Her name is Featherine- I don't think that is MUCH of a spoiler in Higurashi- she likes watching things..... To say the least about her. Also, she was in the opening from the first episode. That's why most OG fans who knew the larger "When they cry" universe knew she would appear at some point, from really early on.

To me its Satoko that needs to change her view point. Rika wants a lil indepence in her life; she does not hate or pity Satoko. Satoko on the otherhand is a codependent personality that has to latch to people so shes in the wrong. When has she ever actually tried to improve herself... pretty much never. Rika is enough of a ditz where she can trust that Satoko can be a big girl and take care of herself; she offers help but Satoko only wants things under her own way (laser focus level of narrow minded). My personal solution is to try dying while holding the blade fragment and see if that crazy entity can be cut-down with it.

@@ramenluver01 remember that he show gives us one perspective. So if Rika did try more then we following Satoko would not know it. If Rika only did try the one time... well she would be in the wrong; I was thinking that she tryed a couple of times off screen and was ignored each time. With the promise being there I personally would sneak out of my room at night to go to Satoko and talk when others are not present. I would realize that my current friends existing is antagonistic to Satoko in that situation... I mean just watch how they openly treat her. Both are in the wrong originally; but only Satoko actually pursued a path that actively works to destroy the other; so she can brainwash her supposed "best friend" so I call that the greater evil done.

It's almost like the friends are blocking sotoko from even having any time with her. But I see you're point. She even said that satoko pushed away rikas offer to help and I really think that stems from like when her uncle was abusing her and she didn't wanna ask for help even when things got bad. Sotokos not gonnna accept help idk why but that's what I feel like what's happening like misunderstandings. Himazawa syndrome is definitely at play here.

The first 3 or so minutes of this episode were an amazing series of Ciconia references and hints. I loved the goroawase "LD3105"... Totally lost my shit on that one. This information does prove that Gou takes place after Ciconia (by fragment reckoning, anyway...not by the AD calendar we puny humans use, of course) which may provide food for more theory-crafting. I kind of imagine a scenario in which, after the Ciconia game board is folded up, Lambda returns to the Higurashi fragments to play around in for a long, long time, to the point she forgets her own identity (just like Featherine, with her memory storage device to prevent such occurrences in the future)...Hence Featherine knowing all about Lambda's many pieces, yet Satoko seems (justifiably) very confused.

OH! That was a Ciconia reference! That makes a bit of sense! I know very little about it. It actually did not sound very interesting at all to me. I was wondering WFT the deal was with hints at sentient spinal cords in anime and manga (won't name the other series that recently pulled that crap) was, all of a sudden.

I definitely suggest giving Ciconia a try. It is quite different from Higurashi and Umineko but still very good. It has kind of downplayed the mystery aspect (at least so far...it’s only 1 arc in) but that’s not to say the mystery is totally absent or not relevant. Plus we already have references to the usual witches so...it’s going to be a fun ride.

@@Shuukuriimudaisuki-sama Well, I'll likely wait till its done, if I do go into it. I just hope this doesn't mean they are planning to do a Ciconia anime, as well. If they do one now (or at least anytime before the game is properly outlined to completion) then it will be like the first Umineko anime disaster- even as an anime only for Umineko at that time I could tell that they royally screwed that up (I am currently rewatching that mess, to remind myself how badly, now that I am into the visual novel for it.... Its painful to endure. But I let my curiosity win out). Anyway- Got a question for you, Josh: Do you know why they were thanking Type-Moon in the credits? I only noticed it in the credits for ep 20 because they were playing DURING the episode- so I didn't skip them like I usually do (I watch so many anime I usually skip endings and sometimes openings unless they really catch me). I like a lot of Type-Moon's works. But they, CLAMP and the creator of the Toaru franchise (all of which I like the majority of the works from) are really good at making multiple series that spoil each other in their respective franchises (though, Type-Moon is the worst for doing this). I am kind of hoping (and dreading) Type-Moon was the reason for them telling new people it was ok to go ahead and jump in blind. Not really sure what to think about that.

OH! They thank TYPE-MOON because of Chie-sensei! She is an insert of Ciel from Tsukihime. She shares the love of curry, the appearance, even the same voice actress. Chie also sometimes wields T-squares like the executor’s Black Keys. Ryu07 loved Tsukihime and got permission to use Ciel’s likeness back in the day and it stuck.

Welcome to the true meaning of Higurashi! ;). Visual novel readers insist that it's all about the power of friendship, but anime-onlys think it's a joke (well, yeah it kinda is but not quite) because that theme isn't enforced in the same way in the original anime, but chooses to focus on the horror and gore. I say why can't we just enjoy them all? I love a good mystery, but if it has heart it's even better.

The thing about Satoko's score is that Rika always hang out with fishturd, in the previous , we can see that those 3 just be Rika's guard while glaring at Satoko for interrupt their meeting and at that time Satoko did not even do any impolite behavior , and they are the one being rude for judging Satoko after conversation . IT just my theory but Satoko was waiting for some private time with Rika BC of their promise abt sharing and helping but Rika just enjoy her stupid fancy (fancy my ass) school life , slurped tea , ignored Satoko entirely while just asking only 1 time for helping her. And then Satoko snapped, blood ,died, return to episode 1 ( or 2 )

Spoilers for both Umineko and Higurashi There is a theory going around that Gou is a forgery. Maybe we are to view Gou from an objective perspective. Prison in a school? Keiichi surviving being stabbed 50 times. Animation errors that aren't errors because they are in the manga too. I hope it ends in a good unpredictable way.

@@thehispanicninja668 Umineko is the spiritual sequel to the original Higurashi. The time, place, and characters are all different though there some...surprising returning cast members, though some of them you may not have even been aware of existing in Higurashi. Basic idea is that there's a super prestigious family, the Ushiromiyas, who have a yearly family meeting on the patriarch's own private island to discuss their business ventures, etc. and to squabble over who inherits the family fortune when the patriarch, Kinzo, kicks the bucket. There are rumors that he amassed his fortune by making a deal with a witch, where he exchanged his own soul for 10 tons of gold. He is also known to be obsessed with the occult and just an all-around weird guy. "Eccentric" is putting it nicely. The main character, Battler, travels to the island with his family and the families of his cousins to partake in the meeting in October of 1986. While there, the entire extended family, plus the servants (18 people in all) are basically stuck on the island during a typhoon. During this time, Battler learns a bit about the legend of the Golden Witch, Beatrice, as well as a creepy-sounding riddle that is believed to describe the hiding place of Kinzo's gold. Also during this time, both servants and members of the family end up disappearing and dying in bizarre ways that mimic the riddle of the gold. The survivors suspect that a hidden 19th person lurks on the island, and this person could be the witch or someone masquerading as her, come to claim the gold for themselves and kill the others. It seems like a traditional mansion murder mystery, until the Golden Witch herself makes an appearance, drawing Battler into a game of twisted logic where he must disprove the existence of magic and witches in order to set himself and his family free from the witch's eternal game of torture (sound a bit familiar?).

Love what Ryukishi is doing with this series... Even when the originals already had a great ending and everything fit right, this plot doesn't feel forced and may add some lore to Umineko. Also loved the OP differences and the ending is gorgeous, too.

The mystery element isn't as intense as the original anime, like, I guess so many people guess it right this time, about Satoko sus and other-horned-woman. But if anything Ryukishi07 succeeds now, is creating fandom split between Team Satoko and Team Rika, even though I suppose that is exactly against his "ideals" of this world (our world I mean, the real one) and once again he may show us that what he wanted is for us to acknowledge that other people have faults, and we should forgive them for being faulty.

I'm not gonna lie, I was bummed out with the Satoko reveal. But after this episode I'm excited again: it's clear what message he's trying to convey with Gou. I'm just hoping it gets to explain the last questions about the damashi arcs and sticks the landing to raise interest in Umineko.

My theory on Rena is that: Satoko, who is privy to the characters' personal struggles, etc. thanks to her new "power" as pseudo-game master, knows about Rena's problems at home. In episode 1, notice how Rena is acting weird after the scavenger hunt and goes to "lie down" in the nurse's office. Satoko then follows her out, saying she's going to "wash her face." I believe Satoko takes the opportunity to suggest to Rena (who is obviously starting to experience symptoms) that the only way to save her family is to kill Rina (the total OPPOSITE of what should be happening, of course. Interesting, since Satoko now believes that talking to her friend (Rika) is useless, and then essentially spreads that message to a very vulnerable Rena). After that idea is put in her head, Rena becomes increasingly convinced that this is the only way. Notice after that scene, we get a flash of the calendar to the 15th (iirc) when we see nothing happen, just rain. Then we go to the 16th, and have more usual events. This is odd, because we always have an event in the first arc whenever the calendar changes. I believe that this is the day that she kills Rina off-camera and hides her body at the dump site. On the 16th, Keiichi goes to help Rena excavate Kenta-kun. Notice how odd Rena is acting here, compared to how she acts (and where she is standing relative to Kenta-kun) in the original works. I'd say it's becoming pretty clear to OG fans what is going on here, considering that Rena continues to act stranger and stranger as days go by, including her new lines in the "USO DA!!!!" scene about "happiness". On the final day, Rika calls Keiichi outside to tell him about how he should trust Rena and doubt himself. This, of course, is because she has erroneously believed that these events mirror Onikakushi to a T, and didn't consider Rena a threat at all. However, Rena has become suspicious that Keiichi is on to her, and notices him talking with Rika. At some point after school, I think Satoko gives Rena a dose of H173 to REALLY bring things to a head. Stabbing then ensues at the Maebara house that night. Meanwhile, completely independent of Rena and her goal of silencing Keiichi, Satoko decides this world is no longer going to work out, and kills Rika after dropping the knowledge that she was all wrong, and now her friends are going to die because of it. Then she offs herself, and on to the next fragment.

Loved this episode. Satoko has become a sympathetic villain as I can't help but dislike Rika's emotional manipulation on Satoko. As soon as I saw them hold the shot on the chandelier, I knew what was coming (and was right). Not many episodes left, but darn it has been fun to watch.

Ryu07 had previously said that Okonogi in Umineko is not necessarily the same version or archetype or whatever from Higurashi, which makes sense because they are totally different fragments. However, it's definitely not impossible that some aspect of the Higurashi story carries over in the Umineko fragments, like Okonogi getting court-martialed for his involvement in Nomura's plan and getting sent to prison...and then, some years later when he gets out, he makes acquaintances with Eva and is hired on as her aide...or at least, that's how I see it. Amakusa is a little different, since he wasn't in the original VN and anime of Higurashi, as you probably know. He first appeared in Umineko, but his weapons-handling experience and association with Okonogi made it seem plausible that he was in the Yamainu at some point...so in the Higurashi manga adaptation, they made him Phoenix (I think?) 13 (since Juuza is written with the kanji for 13) as a bit of a joke, and he got destroyed by Satoko's traps and mind games lol. From that point on, it just became retroactive canon that he was a Yamainu, and I am fine with that.
