EDIT: Or a mix of both. Hidden blocks can be used to complete a level but have to have an outline, or they can't be used at all to complete a level.

I think hidden blocks should be limited in use instead. Like you get two total for a level, one in the main world and one in the subworld. They have to be above another block. They cannot form a softlock. They can only contain power ups, 1ups, or vines. That way you could get the effect of a hidden block from the first three super mario games without it being outright used for malicious stuff.

I'll meet you halfway on the hidden blocks situation. Make them work like the comments do - give the players the option to display or not display hidden blocks. That way, you can keep the surprise of a well-hidden kaizo while being able to show blocks when you're stuck in a level

As far as hidden blocks go I think depending on game type either a ground pound should briefly reveal a shimmering ghosted outline of the block, or the controller should vibrate similar to secrets in Mario Odyssey.

Id say about the hidden blocks Nintendo should make a new rule to upload every level where "Beat the level without hitting any hidden blocks" Just like beating every level with starting at every checkpoint. This would end hidden keys in hidden blocks and probably would even end most dev exits / stars, but could keep the funny kaizo blocks. I just don't know what they would do for every level that has already been uploaded.
