@@vangledosh it is cheaper. 3600x is out of production and has been for a while now. They've already been "thrown off" shelves and the few new ones in stock are now going at a premium. 5600x is currently in the middle of its logistics curve, Cheap to manufacture, high supply, medium demand, lots of stock. 3600x used though is a different story. you can get a 3600x, anywhere from 1/3 of the price to 2/3 of the price compared ot a 5600x depending on used state and condition.

I just love the fact that you can almost put all am4 cpus into any mobo, given the right bios. I am running a 3600X atm and thinking about getting a 5800x3d in a year or so when I feel like upgrading but don’t want to switch platforms. There is still plenty performance for an average gamer like me for a few years to come.

One exception is A520 and B550 boards. Most of these boards will NOT support old CPUs (1000-series, 2000-series, and some 3000-series APUs). Some do, but not officially. My ASRock A520M-ITX/AC definitely did not work with R7-2700. What's stupid is, 300 and 400 series chipset boards now support ALL AM4 CPUs. The same R7-2700 worked on ASRock B450M PRO4 R2.0 with the latest BIOS. I just bought one LOL. At least B550 supports PCIe Gen4 on the main PCIe and m.2 slot. A520 has *absolutely* nothing going for it, as far as I'm concerned.

Yup, for sure! I started this platform with an R3 1200 just to play with the then-new Ryzen architecture; got an R5 1600 when Microcenter started selling them for ~$90; then picked up an R 5 3600X - and every single one of these CPUs has been fantastic, even the 1200, while a bit of a dog being a 4c/4t, it still offered smooth frames(what little frames it had to offer LOL) and consistent performance, had some fun overclocking it on water too. I too am looking to finish off the evolution of my AM4 system with HOPEFULLY a 5800X3D; if not the 3D, then it's gotta be the 5900X, either one would make for a superb finale. I am planning on getting an AM5 system sooner than later, might take the same approach and start with the lowest end CPU just to get in cheap so I can start playing with the new platform(I don't think I'm getting in with a $60 motherboard & $100 CPU this time though LOL. I can't be the only one who would gladly trade PCIe 5.0 capability to have more affordably priced motherboards...). However, mid-range CPUs have really been hot on value pretty much since the Ryzen R5 1600 anyway, we'll see. Gonna be exciting to start the new journey, given how awesome of an enthusiast experience AM4 has been!

I would give overclocking the memory a shot. The IMC on the 5600 is much stronger and should have no trouble hitting DDR4 3000 or more with basically any kit.

Thank you for doing this test. I’ve been thinking about switching my 3600 for a 5600. But looking at your benchmarks, my R5 3600 is still plenty good. Specially the games i play. I also loved how my setup (R5 3600, RX6600XT) was in the benchmarks. A R5 5600 is 150 USD at my local micro center, so if anyone sees this comment in socal, and wants to upgrade to a 5600 for less than 200 USD, now is the time.

Except for PCiE 4 not much, pretty much same speeds, same cache just a few more PCI lanes which even the 1st gen CPU's haven't gotten maxed out yet. We just don't use all those lanes as no more SLI, no add in cards for most folks and NVME are large enough now that 1 or 2 is perfect. Unless you are making Avengers movies in full CGI you really don't need to go past 2700x with the 5700x being a neat toy to just have. NVME at pcie4 aren't that noticeable for most end users except those in the rendering fields.

​@unholydonuts I did, got myself a Ryzen 5 7600, RTX 4070Ti, 32GB DDR5 5200Mhz, and a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus. Thought about going AM4 but even the 5800X3D struggles running Starfield for example. The Ryzen 5 7600 isn't much faster but my build is now "future proof" without really costing more, yes the AM5 mobo's may be ~$100 more expensive but the 5800X3D is ~$300 while the 7600 is ~$200, and comes with a stock cooler and pre-applied thermal paste.

I upgraded from a 3600X to a 5900X on a B450-F Gaming II from ASUS, even that worked fine.... BUT... if pushed to its max especially if you allow the CPU to really stretch to 180W wich it can without overclocking the VRM's on my board would literally melt away. I dont know the temps but I guess 90 - 110C+ in Cinebench so 3 months later I upgraded to a X570S Tomahawk Wifi Max, and now I got very powerful VRMs and cooling and I also notice a big improvement in response in many games. I run a 2060S so not a mega powerful GPU but about on par with the 6600XT in this test or maybe a bit slower. I get similar frame rates in Cyberpunk atleast. 60 - 100 fps depending on the area.

This piece pretty much mirrored my situation. I had a 3600, which was great, but I ended up upgrading to the 5700X for several reasons: a) better compatibility with fast RAM b) more cores for productivity c) it unlocked the full potential of my 6600XT. Overall, the 5700X was just a better match for my whole system, and I could then sell my 3600 with my older B450 system. I do agree with Steve here; if you have a 3600, you're not missing much for gaming, and especially if you have a B450 or older system, just stick with the better matched system overall

That fast ram compatibility argument is not valid. Limiting factor on both Zen2 and Zen3 is still inifinity fabric. If you are hitting 1900mhz IF on Zen2 then you have very little to gain from Zen3's allegedly better IMC. Even on Zen3, IF can barely clock past 1900mhz meaning for clocking rams past 3800mhz, you still have decouple IF and have to deal with increased latency on both.

@@Levent_Ergun In my circumstances, I had a 3200 cl16 kit that worked perfectly with the R53600. I then bought a 3600 cl18 kit (with RGB) and it refused to hold the XMP profile without crashing. As soon as I swapped out the cpu for the 5700X, I had zero issues with the new ram and XMP. That's why I say the new CPU is more compatible with the latest ram kits.

@@garbuckle3000 Never use the XMP, Set your clocks manually. Not saying it won't still crash, But sometimes that actually makes it stable. Not only that, But you can adjust the clock a fraction to make it stable.. It may not be the exact clock you paid for, But a a few mhz won't make difference.

If you want an 8 core Zen 3 part for around 280 bucks the 5700X is the way to go, other options would be the 5600 if you want to pay less (still has around 3700X multi thread performance) or the 5800X3D if you want the fastest for gaming (imo it's a bit too expensive at 450 bucks)

He definitely didn't get 3600 stable. On my x370 MSI gaming pro carbon with 4 dimms I can't get past 3333 stable. It'll boot into windows at 3466 but bsod shortly after and i haven't been able to get that stable so i call BS.

​@@TKIvanov Not lucky, 3 first kits of Corsair LPX ( different revisions, one supposedly B-die ) were not even stable at 2666MHz. Swapped them to Ripjaws V CL16, managed 3000MHz until the last AGESA update where 3200MHz was possible. R5 3600 and 3600MHz was obviously no issue though.

Older video, but it's what I'm looking at right now. Picked up an Rx 6700xt a few months ago and although my 3600 isn't running into any usability issues based on the things i play, i still considered the 5600 upgrade. This video does give me an idea of the overhead protentional but looks like i don't need to rush in doing the upgrade. If anything it'll be something i pick up a little later if for nothing else then to upgrade from zen 2 to 3 so that i don't have to consider another upgrade for the next 5-6 years.

Exactly the kind of video I have been waiting for! As an early 3700x adopter who plays at 1440p, it has been harder than I thought to find consistent and reliable scaling data comparing similarly core configured Ryzen parts from Zen 2 and Zen 3 at resolutions above 1080p, so a huge thanks for making this! As much as 1080p data makes the most sense for CPU testing, I wish 1440p data for CPU's didn't get as lost in the shuffle as they occasionally do! Excellent work Steve!

@@jherr856 I dont bother overclocking the Ryzen, I just put PBO on and make sure the Motherboard decides how much power it gets, and when I changed the last bit a few days ago it went from pulling 125W in Cinebench to 180W and in Cyberpunk I see 4.4 Ghz all core with no manual adjustments, just let the CPU and motherboard (PBO2) do its job. I run a 5900X and a X570S Tomahawk Wifi Max... so very good VRM's to ensure that power get there! Ran a bB450 first, and it works fine, but the VRM's overheat if pushed hard and the CPU get choked out. All core overclock maaaaybe worth it if you do long heavy all core loads of some kind, for gaming, its silly. Mine boost to 4.95 Ghz now and I only run a 35$ Hyper 212 Black Edition cooler, an air cooler that came out 10+ years ago :D Temps hit about 75 - 80C in cinebench and about 65C in Cyberpunk wich is by far the most CPU demanding game I've ever seen. It just take all the cores and threads and devour them, I see 60% CPU usage at times with just a 2060S and 1080 at144 hz.

You bring this out 2 days after I upgraded from the 3600 to the 5600X. Since my 4k panel died late last year, I got a cheap, HDR, high refresh panel that tops out at 1080p. SInce I'm now down to high refresh, 1080p, and since the 5600 and 5600X were on sale significantly cheaper recently, it made sense to get one for the extra fps. I thought so, anyway. Have to say, the heat this new chip puts out is incredible with the stock cooler. The 3600 has the same exact cooler, I believe, and while the 5600X is often throttling itself to get to a lower temperature, what I didn't realise is that the 3600 seemed to be doing the same thing, it just wasn't as noticeable. I would recommend to anyone getting a 5600X, consider getting a custom cooler. I might make the same recommendation to guys who have a 3600 or 3600X, too. I'll be doing so next month, I spent all my pennies this month already. PS, some of the newer emulators such as Xenia (Xbox 360) and RPCS3 (Playstation 3) have benefitted a lot from the upgrade in my playtesting. Fight Night Champion running though RPCS 3 now runs flawlessly, whereas previously there were some quite nasty slowdowns and sound artifacting going on particularly during knockdown sequences. Red Dead Redemption has also been improved quite a bit, and is now what I would call 'playable' although still not perfect running on Xenia. Project Gotham 4 (also Xenia) improved quite a bit too. I haven't run them through an fps counter or anything, I haven't needed to, it's noticeable simply by feeling and looking.

Try a small undervolt on your cpu, Should be able to shave 10 degrees off temp and allow fans to run quieter, without affecting performance.

Sort of did this, but a little bit more extreme on both ends. Went from a 1600-AF (slightly slower version of the Ryzen 5 2600) to a Ryzen 7 5800X. The difference is definitely VERY noticeable. FPS drops in Starcraft 2 have been greatly reduced and Lost Ark loads thing in a heck of a lot faster without stutters. If your power supply can handle it I definitely recommend looking at the 5800X on the used market. Got the 5800X through facebook marketplace for just £200. Might have been able to sell my old 1600-AF for £70 or so, but using it in the homeserver instead (that using an ANCIENT P8400 Core 2 Duo, even the Ryzen 1600-AF can outperform that old piece of junk using only one of its 12 threads, the performance upgrade there is utterly insane). The only downside to these AM4 motherboards being so versatile might be in the long run the motherboards will die, but the CPUs will survive which might make AM4 motherboards in the future very very expensive. The same happened to a lot of the older Intel CPUs, their performance is alright, the CPU prices are literally $10-40 but the motherboards are like $120-400. So who knows for someone looking to make a buck, stock up on AM4 motherboards and sell them in 10 years ;).

I built a new computer last year and purchased things I could get, the R 5 3600 based on reviews, a very cheap zotac GPU, but went for a Asus ROG Strix B550 - e. Last week I purchased a Saphire Nitro + 6700 and I am very very happy with my build. Also first build with AMD, I usually go with Intel and Nvidia. I based my build on reviews from the Hardware unboxed team and Gamers Nexus. I only play at 1080p. I'm really happy with the choice so far. Thanks guys for the time and effort you put in. I'm here in Australia too and find the prices insane, I'm also in rural NSW and have to get everthing posted to me so there is extra cost on top. Keep up the great work.

Hmmm.... For the Ryzen 3000 series owner on 300 series board - it may (or may not) be worth go one step higher. And then it also comes down to if one is planning to upgrade to AM5 (or LGA1700) right away. Lot of factors to take into consideration. For sure, there is less need then the Ryzen 1000/2000 series owner. Anyways, I talked about what I was thinking last time, and this weekend I did move to a 5800X in my old X370 because I'm pretty sure I can get a good few more years of happy service out of my main system. So I kicked the platform upgrade even further down the road, really let the prices of DDR5 settle down. This allowed me to upgrade several other AMD systems around the house as well. I'm sure someone will ask - why 58000X instead of 5700X? Simply I found it on sale for $10 less then the street price of the 5700X. :-)

For me who got 3600, I find that 5800x3D is not worth the upgrade now since I play on 1440 and most of the games I play is gpu bound or above 144fps anyway and my eyes ain't good enough to go beyond that(I got rtx3080). So the 5800x3D price right now is not for me but maybe next 3 years I will consider it compared to what's on the market at that time. 3rd gen of Zen4 may get cache and IPC buffed and even better ヾ( ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)ノ

@@willplaister9743 If you are playing at 1440 or 4k, you should expect nice improvement to the 1% lows but not to the average fps. If playing at 1080p, expect the 1% lows AND fps average to jump up nicely. The X3D should also remain relevant much longer than the non-3D models.

The 1050 was never a gpu for gaming at 1080P and 60 FPS, not even at the time of its release, for that you need an RX 6600 or a 3060.

300 series and 400 series VRMs are identical on more than half of the motherboards, particularly b350 b450 boards. The power draw on 5000 series 105W processors follow the same algorithms as 3000 series 105W TDP and 2000 series 105W TDP processors. You don't extreme overclock 16 core processors on Bx50 class motherboards generally no matter which generation and most of the time it's only worth overclocking 65W class processors on the lower end boards anyway.

I agree and wouldnt expect any serious overclocking, but it'd still be worth seeing the results as even at stock (let alone PBO) i'd imagine some of these boards might struggle with some core heavy work. Especially when many boards will claim "support" for these high end chips.

12 and 16 core are suited to the higher end 300 and 400 series with decent vrms. 6 and 8 cores run great in all but the worst asrock boards. They should still be fine for gaming, but actual heavy workloads on the 12 and 16 core chips will result in throttle and heat.

I have an R5 3600 CPU that runs @4.5 GHz with 2x8 GB 3800MT CL14 Micron E Die RAM with tight timings. It gets very close to the stock 5600 performance. I'm scoring 558-560 in the CPU-Z ST test. It is very important to overclock IF and RAM to reduce latency hit due to the L3 cache configuration.

About a year ago I upgraded my 2700X to a 5600X, it was impressive enough (and due to Intel 11th Gen) I built a workstation with a 5950X as well. Definitely happy with my choice. Probably wont be upgrading too soon, but excited to see what Ryzen 7000 and Intel 13th Gen will bring to the table.

I personally upgraded from a 3600x to a 5600x on the same ASUS ROG Hero 7 Wifi mobo, and the performance gains were really noticeable, especially in the latest games at 1440p and because PC ports are becoming more and more CPU bound. I sold the 3600x so I barely paid half price for the 5600x. Absolutely worth the upgrade, as it removed a lot of microstutters in games, but also runs noticeably cooler (around 8-10c less) and uses less power, so the fans stay quieter.

JUST as I suspected..... I think I'm gonna save up a few pennies and go for the 5800x3D ..... I don't think I'll be able to afford a new mobo, ram, AND cpu (plus I would like to get a new case and higher wattage psu) when they come out...mainly because I don't want to get a low end machine if I went with the am5 boards... so I would have to save even longer (i don't do credit cards, so I gotta save up) and that's gonna take a w hile to get what I REALLY want... so I'm basically future proof for a few years... Rebuilt my PC back in 2020 (from an AMD Phenom II X3 720BE) to a Ryzen 5 3600 (got it for $160 at Microcenter). 2 years later, this machine still runs like a champ and can game the latest games. Only thing possibly holding me back is my GTX 1660 and my monitor which is limited to 6fps, but still, I can play at 1080p with many games maxed out and keep a constant 60 fps. If not max quality, I can go with high and still get 60 fps.

personally i was going to get the 3600 when pairing it with a 16 series card was pretty good, mom went out and bought a old dell prebuilt called it good and here i am 2 years later.. built my first pc and got an i5 10400f inside with an rx 6600, now i know you might be wondering why i would comment if its not talking about ryzen but seeing how the 3600 and 5600x are really good bang for the buck i would compare the i5 10400f to the 3600 and 5600x

10400f cannot beat 5600 for sure, hell not even close to 5500. 3600 vs 10400f well 10400f is bettter in games for sure. 12400f is more relevant to be compared with a 5600 and even then I personally will stick to AMD purely because of how much variety I have and how I don't need to pay over a hundred bucks to get a decent enough mobo with overclocking support vs pretty great AMD B450 or B550 which go for 60-90$

I was running a 3300X on an MSI B450 Gaming pro carbon with an RX5600 XT. Upgraded to a R5 5600 recently, really made me rethink what my minimum requirements are for a multitasking PC.

Great video! I switched from the 3600 to the 5600 and it was an excellent upgrade for me when gaming at 4K with a 3080 Ti.

I'm upgrading from a R5 3600 to a R9 5900X (2nd hand) that I was able to get for $290, this will breath more years to my X570i mobo.
