Thats the thing, just because there is better and more recent stuff out there, your older stuff is not bad because of that. A lot of people get drawn into the thinking that they always need the new shiny stuff, in quite a lot of cases that is not true. Of course if someone has the money and likes to be on top with technology, that is one thing, just upgrading for the sake of it is more like burning money. Still have AM4 3700X 32GB DDR4 3200 CL16 and a 2080ti on 144Hz 1440p and I am still fine with it. Want to go to more VR gaming and for that performance is not really sufficient. Because of that I am looking at used 3080ti and 5800X3D or maybe 5700X3D since that is almost half the price with only minor performance reduction. I still dont see the point for me to go to AM5 yet cause I wont buy the soon available ridiculously overpriced NVIDIA 5000 Gen GPUs that need PCIe5 so I am happy with AM4 PCIe4. EDIT: I like to keep cost and loss of value down with hardware, therefore buying used and usually stay 1-3 generations behind, depending on if the performance is sufficient for what I like to do with it. Really easy to burn a lot of money with PC hardware. Especially if gaming is not the only hobby (Cars, driving on Nordschleife and other race tracks, Mountainbiking, Festivals, Concerts...)

I just picked up a second-hand ryzen 5 3600 system from Facebook Marketplace for $200. It was running an RX 580 and only a single 8GB stick of ddr4. Luck of the draw with 2nd hand 3600s though. I got one of the early ones, and the memory controller quickly degraded to the point where I went from running the RAM rock solid at 3200 16-16-16-36-52-1 (Single rank 8GB Samsung B die modules) to gradually decreasing the frequency and loosening the timings. It was just out of warranty when there were no settings for CPU or RAM that were stable. It wasn't just the Bios updates either, as I tried rolling them back to the original when it started getting flaky.

Undervolted using curve optimizer -30 all core, and overclocking using PBO2 +200, running at 70c with stock cooler at max load xmrig mining. Getting very good gaming performance, surprisingly good, and doing around 5500 hashes/sec on xmrig. Not bad for a placeholder while I wait for a good deal on a 5700x3d. Definitely worth keeping around in the collection, as it's more than fast enough for most people's needs.

Upgrade - July 2024 - R7 5700X3D (still using Wraith Prism after adjusting curve optimizer & PPT, TDC, EDC) Now with 5700X3D + RTX 4070, I have a great gaming PC for my 1080p ultrawide display. Can't wait to see the 8700k vs the 7800X3D as an 8700k owner looking to upgrade and curious just how much of a performance uplift I'm going to get! This is wild!
@saundby5 ай бұрын
I upgraded from a 7820K to an AMD 7950X3d and the difference is night and day in multithreaded workloads. Stuff that used to be click the button then wait while the bar crawls across the screen happen so fast that the first few times I didn't even realize it was already done. I stuck with the 7920K way too long. A 7800X3D will give very similar performance. My heavy work is image processing and CAD/CAM, I need those extra cores. Anything else, the 7800 is equal to the 7950X3D in every way. I went with the X3D because I wanted the thermal limiting for an air cooled system, and the performance hit vs 7950X has been nil because the loads are very bursty. I did the upgrade 14 months ago, and still couldn't be happier.

Honestly the 8700k is SO MUCH slower than a 5800x3D... but again it depends on how much you do. Overall you will have more than 100% performance uplift in most things. All of the "older architectures" get absolutely demolished by Zen3.
@ismaelsoto95074 ай бұрын
Tbf the i7 8700K is ever slightly faster than the R5 3600 or similar in performance depending on the game so you already have a decent enough comparison and even a R5 7600 would be a huge upgrade performance wise.

@@Watcheyes My last CPU jump was 4.5x over what I had before to a 5900x. It will be a while till something is even close to that over the 5900x. Maybe next gen will get there if the Zen6c rumours are accurate. 12 full cores with 32 Zenc cores would be pretty awesome.
@Watcheyes5 ай бұрын
@Somethingaboutthat Yes that's is a huge bump. The 5000 series is so good it will take a very long time to outrun. And I think the 5000 series for content creator (doing 4k) is all you need. The extra power wont be noticed. Still deciding if to upgrade my 3700x to 5000 or go for 7000 or 9000. For me stability is of huge concern. My computer is now a bit over 3 years old, will I have it for another 3-4 years or jump to a new motherboard and cpu instead. But stability in 5000 series is great. New 9000 series can be a risk.
