Actually it would be - while not useful and way too much work to be worth it - cool to see the difference between say 3800X vs 5800X3D compared to Intel i5-2600K vs 7700K - the difference between single generation of AMD compared to what... four? generations of Intel CPU and motherboard upgrades during stagnation. So 8c/16thread to 8c/16 thread and 4c/8 thread to 4c/8 thread. EDIT: Let's see: 2000-series, 3000-series, 4000-series, but I don't recall Intel 5000-series, 6000-series and 7000 series. Have I lost a couple of years from my braincells, or did Intel skip 5000-series?

Aye.. that's where the time-line broke. I hope AMD can eventually force Intel into platform collaboration again. And that we can have multiple chip-set vendors who're CPU vendor agnostic. Having VIA Technologies back in the ring with super affordable chipsets for the budget crowd would be nothing short of epic. And being able to pick and chose between CPU vendors throughout an entire RAM generation on the same board would be a dream.

Spot-on with that analysis of why this was such a heavily-requested comparison, Steve, at least in my case. Being able to drop this chip into my existing motherboard for the same price as a CPU+motherboard upgrade, and getting essentially identical performance in gaming as Intel's best, makes the 5800X3D very appealing, especially when DDR5 RAM is still quite pricey, despite large improvements.

Paired with 3080Ti(reference nvidia scored at best buy) and only game at 4K so there isn't much there for me for any new CPU today. Not until the game engines utilize the cores better. Glad to see AMD creating this type of option though. It really does fill a gap for a lot of gamers, and at the same time gives AMD their first commercial marketing of the tech.

I had a bad itch to upgrade my AM4 platform several years ago. I was running a R7 2700x and a RX 580. I was going to get a new gpu but at the time, gpu mining has made video card prices insane. So, to scratch my itch, I upgraded to the 5600X instead. As you pointed out, I did not see a huge performance uplift with the RX580 but I bought a RX 6800 recently and the combination has really put a smile on my face. Like many others, I waited a long time to upgrade my gpu and the 5600X was a good compromise until a gpu upgrade was cost effective. Now, with the 5800X3D as an option, I still have an upgrade path left on the AM4 platform that makes financial sense. Should extend my use for another 4 to 5 years. Thanks for all the hard work putting together this data. It is appreciated more than you know.

Awesome overview. Some games seem like they have massive benefits (on the 6950XT at 1080p) since we are measuring FPS, but it is primarily because those games already render high framerates... looking at frametime however (what we actually perceive) it's just a matter of 0,5ms in CS:GO and (more substantially) 2.7ms in Assetto Corsa... Which still isn't MASSIVE, considering the amounts of cash you need to fork up to catch any real perceptual performance difference. Being a 6600XT owner, I am incredibly happy that I went with the 5600 instead of "future proofing" with a highly expensive part like the 5800X3D... The last 10 years I feel like GPU performance improvements has decreased substantially (with often the lack of driver support killing off old hardware prematurely), and likewise we aren't as CPU limited with the advent of low level APIs like DX12 and Vulkan.... I am having a hard time seeing my setup becoming irrelevant the coming 5 years, especially considering how well UE5 runs with TSAAU on the card. Same goes for the most demanding games today, like Cyberpunk. With FSR/DLSS RSR/NIS, Freesync/Gsync and hopefully even more enhancements techniques... like an improved FSR2.0-based "Radeon Boost". We have so many tools to prolong the relevance of hardware generations.

@@MrGts92 Personally I wanted an AMD card because of the superior Linux driver support... I am switching from Windows for good now, because I am so tired of being a part of big tech consumer exploitation (Microsoft, Google etc). But other than that AMD is extremely competitive here in northern Europe, especially in the mid-range. I bought the 6600XT at release for MSRP (460EUR with tax incl.) It was frequently in stock and for that price meanwhile the 3060Ti was going for 850EUR+ and was never in stock. So it really didn't make sense to go with nvidia at all. Even to this day, AMD still stay competetive in terms of pricing in Sweden. I sold my 6 year old GTX1070 for 300EUR, so the upgrade was only a 160EUR investment One thing I have learned from owning AMD hardware and Nvidia hardware over the years is that nvidia generally is a lot better at release, but doesn't improve much, and even degrade as new hardware generations come out. Mainly because less focus is spent on game optimizations on newer games for older architecture. AMD on the other hand usually stick to a very similar core architecture. They massively improve drivers over the first year and continues to support the cards for years to come. We can see this with the 6600XT. It has gained massive RT performance increase, as well as DX11 and OpenGL performance over the first year. I can play Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition with normal RT sticking around 65-90fps at 1440p. Doom Eternal with RT at 1080p renders at 120-170fps. So, really it's actually a very powerful card. It plays games with RT where RT makes sense, and others were it doesn't make sense (like cyberpunk) both the 3060 and 3060Ti are struggling with RT as well. :) So I really feel like that "superior RT performance" won't actually add any benefit for me.

The 5800X3D spells more trouble for Intel than people might realize... It's neck-and-neck with the 12900K despite using significantly less energy, and despite Intel had a full year more development time on Alder Lake. Zen 4 and Raptor Lake are on the horizon now, with Zen 4 being slated to fix the clock speed lead that Intel has. If AMD comes hot out of the gate with the Zen 4 X3D variant(s) it's absolutely in the realm of possibility that their traditional roles will be completely reversed: AMD as the premium brand with the ultimate gaming performance, and Intel as the value king that provides good all-round performance for the price.

Very good Steve, you figured it out. AMD owners will buy a less expensive CPU for a socket when they know there are future releases coming out on that socket. Then when the last gen comes out for that socket they often get the best CPU they can, within reason for that socket and the amount of time they own the MB is often around 5 years. They don't have to always have the "best" system. You get a MB that you really like and that's the base of the system, not the CPU, so you're dealing with something you get very familiar with over time and in the end you got a lot of use out of the product and you enjoyed it the entire time.

I would just like to say that the 5900X is also a good upgrade path if you're into more than just gaming. Will still have a decent bump in FPS compared to the 3600, however you get 12 cores, not 8, and if you're streaming while gaming, videoediting, multitasking like a champ and so on it makes quite a difference.

This test perfectly shows why I will not be upgrading my CPU for at least two more years. Ryzen 5 3600 is still perfectly capable of running every game there is and will keep that up for 2-3 more years, in my experience. While I don't have said CPU, I do have a very comparable one in almost every way: the i7 8700k (Same amount of cores/threads and pretty similar performance all around). And since I use my CPUs as long as they perfectly run every game I throw at them, even AMDs long socket life does usually not prevent me from buying a new board every time. A Ryzen 5/I5 usually outlives that, with about 5 years of usage and the Ryzen 7/i7 do around seven years, even if you insist on them doing every game on the market.

After the better part of a decade of 14nm stagnation this last year has been absolutely INSANE in terms of CPU gains. AMD really managed to seize the opportunity to gain momentum with Zen 1 to 3, and Intel managed to fight back right in the nick of time with Alder Lake. The 3D Vcache "stunt" by AMD just seemed like the proverbial rabbit out of the magicians hat to close this round. Zen 4 vs Raptor Lake is going to be absolutely thrilling, and if the rumour/leaking folks are to be believed RDNA3 vs Lovelace is going to be a thriller too... I had all but lost interest in the boring incremental improvements in the PC space (this is written from my 12 year old "coffee table laptop"), but it's certainly been re-ignited. If it hadn't been for the crypto bullshit and human malware I think 2020-2022 would have been remembered as the second dawn of the PC for sure. Anyhow, I digress: Cracking good job as always Steve!
