If you're building a new system then it makes no sense to use LGA 1700 unless you can get the motherboard and CPU for dirt cheap. Otherwise you're better off getting onto the AM5 platform even if you have to settle for the Ryzen 5 7600 or 8600G. The fact that you can upgrade to a CPU like the 9800X3D in the future without replacing the motherboard (and memory if we're comparing it to a DDR4 LGA 1700 motherboard) is just way too good of an option especially given the remaining uncertainty if the Raptor Lake stability issues have been resolved or not.

Unfortunately AMD is clearly treating AM4 as the replacement for low end AM5 CPUs. It's the reason why there are no AM5 Ryzen 3 or Athlon CPUs (there is the Ryzen 3 8300G but it's only available to OEMs and SIs). I consider it unfortunate because it means people who can't afford a Ryzen 5 7600 or 8600G are left buying motherboards with no upgrade path and memory they won't be able to reuse when they'll need to upgrade.

More than likely, AM5 will only last 2-3 generations (8000 series doesn't count because it is a refresh). I wouldn't expect to see 10GT/s DDR5 running on AM5. Younger people don't get that AM4 was an anomaly. Haven't seen anything like it in 30 years of PC building and it is extremely unlikely I will ever see anything like it again. It is far better to build a 5700X3D rig from scratch than to scrape your way onto AM5 with a 7500F and cheap DDR5 that will perform no better than DDR4 costing half the price. intel is floundering and some mutual cross-licensing with AMD may be what saves them. Don't be surprised if 3D-Vcache ends up on intel CPUs and games move in the direction of making use of it, leaving everything else in the dust. That 5700X3D is going to keep on trucking while most newer CPUs fall by the wayside for gaming due to insufficient cache.

Productivity benchmarks are pretty much pointless here. Nobody buys an X3D for that. And, while it might perform slightly worse than the 14400F on a productivity benchmark, that is irrelevant to me because I'm not making big bucks on the occasional video. When you look at power consumption, the 5700X3D is pretty much the most cost efficient CPU on the market currently for productivity use, when considering all factors. Most people have no reason to fret over an extra half a minute on a video render. The people who do aren't buying a CPU in this class anyway. Also, one thing reviewers consistently overlook is that, while another 20fps in Cyberbug is nice, the fact I no longer have frame drops when driving through Night City since I upgraded to a 5700X3D is priceless. That is absolutely cache dependent and no intel CPU can give you that. In general, an X3D CPU will give you a smoother gaming experience. Too bad everyone is focused on max framerate. Yes, it is possible for millions of people to be wrong. Just watch literally any YT vid with footage of someone playing an online FPS game. They will invariably be running unlocked, which is a great way to introduce a lot of inconsistency in frame pacing for nothing. Frames you can't display are pointless. And, even if you can display it, beyond 165Hz, there are rapidly diminishing returns and going over 240fps is completely pointless because no human has vision that good. This whole concept of input lag being inversely proportional to framerate is only partially correct, and only then from a theoretical perspective. One thing that is sure to increase input lag is stutter, and that's what you get unless you lock the framerate to the lowest it can possibly go. Not the 1% low you get when you test unlocked, but the lowest momentary framerate you can observe on the counter when playing. If you do that, basically the 1% lows are just reflecting loading screens. If you are running unlocked then the 1% lows also reflect the stutter. And don't forget microstutters, something a lot of people simply just don't notice. TL;DR the goal should be smoothing out those frametime graphs.

@@Lurch-Bot I think 5700x3d is basically 5700x but more boosted for gaming perfomance thanks to its higher L3 cache which helps alot in avoiding heavy load on RAM, basically game's resources are being cached so it helps keeping higher and steadier performance in 1% lows as well. It works about that unless i missed something. Basically you get boosted only in gaming. EDIT: Nvm, i did some googling again: "It's important to understand what V-cache is. V-cache is an expanded Level 3 cache (+64mb, giving a total of 96mb of L3 cache) on the 5800x3D (and similar upcoming chips) that operates as a "victim cache". Being a "victim cache" means that it doesn't really store anything on its own. Instead, if something gets pushed out of L2 or L1 cache, it gets moved to L3 cache instead of being tossed out entirely. This means that if that data is needed again, it can be swiftly retrieved from L3 instead of having to go to RAM."

The discussions around Ryzen 3000/4000/5000 likely not beeing supported on "older" Chipsets (MSI) was scary and made the whole "AM4 long time support" claims by AMD look stupid. But in the end the support turned out to be excellent. Not least because many consumers and independant media here on KZbin held AMD to their promised long term support.

And i only have an RTX 3050, it was a crazy good upgrade, highly recommended.
@mynickisalreadytakenАй бұрын
Really good to hear. I have an R7600 and it works great in Beam. I was using an i7 8700, so quite similar to your old 3600 and the jump was def. intense. I will put in a used 9800X3D in 2 years i guess. Maybe. Am on 1440p UW with RX6800. Oh and good to hear that Beam works fine with an RTX 3050. Had the same experience with an RX 6600 before. It just eats CPU a lot. But even older Systems can run this game well. I d onot have a lot of BeamMP experience, but the R7600 works fine so far.
@Lurch-BotАй бұрын
BeamNG is physics realistic. The more complex the physics calculations in a game, the more CPU cache hungry it will be because it has to cache data for every intermediate step of every calculation. OP was partly correct about Black Myth Wukong being GPU intensive. But games are usually only GPU intensive when their physics calculations are relatively simple. Jedi Survivor is another example of a game that really doesn't benefit from more cache because they aren't at all trying to be physics-accurate. By contrast, racing and flight sims benefit greatly from V-cache. If I had asked some random gonk on Reddit whether I should upgrade my CPU or GPU (5500/6600), I'm sure they would have universally said to upgrade the GPU even if I told them I only had a budget of $200. Even if I bought a used GPU, that wouldn't gain me much. Meanwhile, because I have been gaming since the '80s, I am fine with running everything at 1440p low if I have to and I properly prioritize a smooth gaming experience over eye candy. So I got a 5700X3D. Also, Lossless Scaling exists. There never has been a better $200 PC upgrade, inflation adjusted, and there never will be again. There may be some games out there that don't benefit from the extra cache but there are so many that do. In those games, a GPU upgrade is not going to net me more frames. But even in the games that don't really benefit much from the extra cache, I still notice a smoother gameplay experience, in spite of the fact I made a lateral move on single threaded performance. There is more to X3D than can be shown via conventional benchmarking methodology.

@@mynickisalreadytaken last year i was on BeamMP on a 10 person server, struggling to get 15fps, and someone else who also was struggling with 15fps had an RTX 4090 if you can believe it, turns out he was also on some intel 6 core cpu, thats the problem. So on BeamNG and BeamMP, the more cars, the more cpu threaded it becomes, so the more threads, the more cars you can have. And i think the 3D V cache comes into play as well. Thats why i found it amusing that someone with a high end GPU was having the same experience of my 3050 lol.

@@Lurch-Bot Good choice on your new CPU. In your case you had the opportunity to have a "more modern" AM4 System already. The 5500 is good, but is more or less a Ryzen 3600. In BeamNG this CPU works, but going from 5500 to 5700X3D while also having more modern DDR4 RAM ( i guess 3200), you benefit alot in this game with a better CPU. And with an RX6600 you are more than capable to generate enough frames for BeamNG in 1080p. I used an RX6600 for 1080p Ultrawide in Beam with an i7 8700 (Around Ryzen 3600/5500). Works. But the Upgrade to the Ryzen 7600 was intense overall Even without the 3D V-Cache. If you do not have a strong focus on BeamNG, a faster GPU would have worked with The Ryzen 5500 in general. Also in most other racing games. Again, Resolution is important, too. Most Games would have no Problem with that CPU. But your 5700X3D is an Excellent Choice for this case, i would say.

This is my actual combo the 5700X3D and 4080 Super. I like it to game at higher resolutions without needing the best CPU in the world to give me the appropriate head room. The X3D chip is just a really good value and will always uplift games that take advantage of the 3D V cache
@Lurch-BotАй бұрын
No game is 'taking advantage of the 3D V-cache' because it is too new. There are just games that rely more on CPU cache than others. Those frame drops you don't get when driving through Night City anymore are because of the fact CDPR was trying to put 10 lbs of crap into a 5 lb bag is one of the most obvious benefits of X3D. Yeah, the engine is crap and not well optimized to do those calculations but that's a nebulous argument when you want to play Cyberbug. Basically, the physics calculations needed to move that fast through a high density area are so intense that it overwhelms pretty much any CPU that isn't an X3D. Cache is required to process all those physics calculations. This is why X3D pretty much universally performs better in racing and flight sims. The more realistic the physics, the more caching required for the intermediate stages of those calculations. Not that Cyberpunk is physics accurate but is far more complex than something like Black Myth Wukong. If a game ends up noticeably GPU heavy these days, it is usually because the physics are simple.

I'm actually confused...I always thought that the FPS was always limited by either the CPU or GPU (meaning one of them will hit 100% utilization before the other). However, I can clearly see that neither CPU or GPU is hitting 100% in these comparisons, what stops the 14400F from spreading its legs further for instance to gain the extra FPS.
@swiftqwrt7543Ай бұрын
From experience, a cpu dont need to show 100% utilization for it to be a bottleneck. The i5 might not be able to use all of its cores in games 100%.
@Phoenician4922Ай бұрын
@swiftqwrt7543 Thanks...I guess so...I'm also a bit surprised that we can still get a CPU bottleneck with high and ultra settings, I thought we needed the lowest settings on 1080p to get a CPU bottleneck but I guess not. Makes me think twice about getting a low end cpu with let's say a 4060.
@tyler6602Ай бұрын
I was just messing around with a GPU benchmark on lowest settings and it only used 2 threads of my 8 core CPU so my cpu usage was only around 15 percent while the GPU was only at 50-60
@swiftqwrt7543Ай бұрын
@@Phoenician4922 Yes, its interesting to see how different games utilize cpus. If the cpu and ram isnt powerful enough, gpu wont be able to run 100%. If fps is acceptable though, i dont think its a problem.

When you think about the fact that the 5000 cpus were starting to be release when Intel was only on its 10th gen, those productivity benchmark stay very honourable in my opinion. Were the 5700x3d released back in 2020, Intel would quite likely be dead today.

For 5700x3d Owner I have good news for you how to get free extra performance If you have ram 3200mhz overclock it to 3600mhz ( higher the ram speed are better regardless of the CL) and use PBO 2 tuner and lower the voltage -mv20 Those will higher 0.1 and 1% And slightly increase Avg frame rates ( Ram speed effects significantly depends on type of the game some games take a big advantage of that and avg frame get up alot ) I am 5700x3d owner i did multiple tests on it
@tim3172Ай бұрын
- Assuming RAM that was binned down to 3200MHz will actually work with reasonable stability at 3600MHz (there's a reason they didn't sell it at 3600MHz for a higher cost.) - Assuming their 5700X3D functions exactly as yours does... which is almost never the case as AMD chips tend to vary wildly in silicon quality. "Those will hire"... riiiiiiiigggghhhhtttt "Ram speed effects".... again... riiiiiiiggghhhtttt

These AM4 3D chips make the platform last longer for gamers. No need for expensive AM5 upgrade to game on PC. I don't expect AMD to release new models for this platform(though the return of 5800X3D would be nice), but hope AM5 gets slightly better support and last as long.

For some reason I found more interesting the what appears to be bottleneck in both systems being the CPUs. Not completely unexpected, but does make you wonder if you are going to have these or similar CPUs, if it would be even worth the extra cost going for a 4080 Super or equivalent.

(Laughs in X3D) Did you notice the GPU on the Intel side wasn't under as high a load? It's like the architecture just wasn't feeding it data as efficiently as the Ryzen side, so it generated less FPS.

Also - probably you know that - RDNA3 gpus loose HALF of fps going high>cinematic. Also - word is 9800x3d on 1080p med-high is getting huge fps bump - can observe this on hardware canucks as they've compared 1080p high to 720p low to check perf scalling. I get that 9800x3d is pricey part but my guess is 9800x3d+7900GRE can be used to gaming gains same way as on budget builds and that would be cool to watch, say on wukong with path tracing+720p+fsr3.1. I constantly promote calling such type of tests 'shameless' :).
