@@HamsterHaris I do have a question though, hope you will answer. I still don't understand whether increasing TDP (Wattage) will also increase the clockspeed of the processor, cause as far as my short knowledge goes iGPU uses a portion of the CPU clockspeed. Please enlighten me.
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
Let's do this one in details. We will reffer to your CPU as an APU which is made out of the cpu and gpu component. The cpu TDP in ryzen controller actually refers to the APU tdp - the maximum heat your APU can produce (which in turn is the maximum performance it can do). The cpu component of the APU is more important (and more power hungry) than the gpu component so the cpu will always have an advantage in the power distribution. That being said, let's say that the APU has 35W and we increase it to 45W. Now the APU has more power to distribute between the cpu and the gpu BUT - the gpu max frequency stays the same! *This means that all of the tdp increases will simply be shifted to the cpu instead.* If you were to increase maximum gpu frequency (from the gpu tab) - only then would the APU allocate more power to the gpu part. TL;DR Increasing the TDP will only affect the CPU (for as long as the tdp isn't too low) P.S. one tiny exception is where too low TDP would lower both the cpu and the gpu performance as there simply isn't enough to distribute. I would also like to point out that the TDP only limits by temperature (so there is no starving of the APU but rather hitting the brakes once a point is reached) On the other hand VRM current is the one that infact changes the power distribution.

Hi H Haris. This is a really informative video. Thank you for the effort. I am using the 2.2.5 version & only tweaking the temps did work for me. But I have realised that lowering the temps too much is causing the FCLK & UCLK clocks to throttle (refer HWinfo sensor data for the processor). For e.g. in my Nitro 5 3550H lower the temps to 88 C causes the FCLK & UCLK clocks to not hit the 1200 mhz max, which means it's not communicating with the RAM at the max speed. Although 1200 mhz is achieved at 89 C. I have also noticed that the spike temps are still 5 - 6 C higher than the selected temp in RC. My settings are temp - 90, Boost TDP - 40 and nothing else. RC definitely behaves differently in different games but whatever it is, it does work and when the repasting couldn't stop stuttering, RC did.
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that reduced cpu performance might cause UCLK to clock down (for power conservative reasons) which in turn will cause FCLK to follow as they need to be in 1:1 ratio for stability. Also ryzen seems to be getting different data from many monitoring sensors, so it is often hard knowing whether there is a real issue or simply false reading I will investigate this further, however I believe that it is either power-saving or false reading from hwinfo
@koushiknath7
@koushiknath7 3 жыл бұрын
@@HamsterHaris Correctly said. I have to use HWinfo to monitor the CPU temps in Afterburner. Is there anything else that works with Afterburner instead of HWinfo for CPU temp monitoring? Also I wanted to know how is the Vega GPU temps different from CPU's when they essentially are in the same socket? The highs & lows differ a lot.
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
None that I know of.. The igpu should have the same temp as the cpu, yes. I'll go ahead with it faulty reading I mean you could have a difference in a few degrees if by any miracle each part of the APU has its own thermometer but I really doubt amd (or intel) do it

@koushiknath7 3 жыл бұрын
@@HamsterHaris okay. I believe the boost TDP is what is contributing mostly to the UCLK speeds. But then again as you found the readings might be off with HWinfo. I did find that lowering the target temps too much in RC effects the UCLK speeds directly, may be due to reduced boost TDP. I'll wait for your further findings. I will be getting my hands on a R5 4600H soon so will be able to test and confirm RC behavior on UCLK speeds for 4000 series as well before and after applying RC temp limits.

Couple of questions. When you start up RC, the default values (TDP, TDPboost, TDPmin, Temp, VRM, etc.) are not necessarily the defaults for your APU, correct? Secondly: does VRM limit the TDPmin at all? I believe from my limited experience with it, you can increase TDPmin up the the power made available to the APU (via the VRM). Is this correct?
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
1) No idea honestly. All the laptops I've tested it on were 35W variants so they all had the same values 2) It could but not necessarily. All TDP options are based around heat production while VRM is around actual electricity. So in theory, if you were to reduce the Amperage you could increase TDPmin (as less power results in less heat) while higher would reduce TDPmin. The way I look at it is that TDP is simply heat/min while VRM is simply power. In the end it is tricky as both can limit each other

We use precise electronics for informatics. Every signal, every input is simply electrical current. While the electronics inside can "survive" higher currents it WILL damage them over time. They just weren't made for the currents other than already applied (or lower) On the other hand, lowering the current will not damage anything but it acts like a hard limit to performance (which we generally don't want. We want it to have wiggle around a certain value). Also too low values might freeze up the system (just a minor inconvenience)

Hi, does the CPU TDP setting mean that the computer will try to maintain the cpu at that exact tdp even when it is idle ? Or the CPU TDP means that it can use up to that amount of power ? Also I can see from some of your comments that you dont set the Min TDP so do I really need to set the Min TDP ?
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
2nd - can use up to that ammount of power (when not in boost state). If the cpu is in idle it will downclock as much as other processess allow Tdp min is a substep between boost and non-boost tdp I personally don't really set it as I keep the boost at low enough tdp that it never hits the temp limit thus it never exits boost under work conditions. But to be honest, I did not measure any meaningful impact of the min tdp value

Question about what the W stands for is that for Volts? At first I thought it was for watts but my charger says 150 volts. I don't want my pc to go over 70 C, when video editing or gaming. I have a Asus Tuf 505DT. What values would you recommend? Lastly, once I have the preset applied if I close the program it will continue to work?
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
It is indeed watts (power/heat) V is for volts (electrical potential (voltage)) A for Ampere (electrical current) Your charger being 150 volts means it is to be used within a 150v power grid - which is not a standard for any country so it is most likely a 150W charger... Meaning that it can charge that much at most. If you want to reduce temperature either impose a temperature limit or reduce the boost tdp from whatever is the max cTDP value stated for your processor. Lastly, you need to keep it open

Hey man everything works nice and awesome but I have this slight issue where I get absoloutely random stutters when there is no overheating or any bottleneck, from 60 fps to 30. Someone suspected that my VRM might be overheating and all, do you have any clue what possibly causing it ? I've seen random Gpu Voltages on GPU-Z althou I've been told that those were normal.
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 10 ай бұрын
Depends on how long those stutters are If you are facing short (seconds) stutters (freeze) it might just be a background process, a load in progress. If the stutter is just a drop in framerate but not actual freeze, background process or the game itself just being demanding for that moment (this can be too many visuals or cpu tasks which are not visible to the player) If however the stutter (freeze) lasts longer and is frequent OR the low framerate persists for a longer period it just might be overheating Best way to test it would be to either measure the temperatures with i.e. hwinfo (not hwmonitor) OR if you are unsure of the temp limits (as some components might reduce performance at 70C, some at 100C... depends on the manufacturer and device) you can also simply limit the performance by either lower framerate or lower settings while maintaining the same framerate (vsync or fps limit) and seeing if the problem persists. If it does - does it take a longer time to occur? If there are improvements - it may indeed be overheating Regarding random voltages.. components usually work as much as they need to (to conserve power) this fluctuations are normal EDIT: if those stutters were introduced with ryzen controller - are you trying to increase performance beyond its default? If yes, probably overheating. If not, perhaps ryzen controller on its own is causing the issue

After watching this video, I made the following set ups: I decreased the temperature limit from 80 C to 51 C Cpu Tdp to 20 Cpu boost Tdp to 20 Cpu min Tdp to 20 Re apply option to 180 seconds Right now is does not make noise at all but I am not sure if the above set up will damage the laptop in the future. Do you think it would be better to increase the temperature and decrease the Tdp even more? Could you tell me a set up for the daily tasks and a second one for light gaming? Thank you in advance!!!
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Temperature limit works only for boost tdp (which you have made equal to the tdp thus it won't really do anything) However, rest assured, temperatures up to 80C are considered safe (even though i.e. 70C is perfectly reasonable) Furthermore, 4700u default tdp is 15 (and default boost is up to 25) If you're looking for efficiency you could just reduce tdp to 15 (so it can boost to 20 when needed) Also, HP laptops come with a lot of tracking software that wastes quite a chunk of performance.. removing it might help you out more than limiting your apu EDIT Standard use Temp 65 Tdp 10 Boost 15 Light gaming Temp 75 Tdp 15 Boost 20 (to 25) Depending how much you actually need it Also if you don't have dual channel ram, dual channel can increase the graphics performance by atleast 30% without increasing any power input Edit 2 Feel free to modify my suggestions to your needs

Try setting tdp values to something extremely low and apply - see if there are any changes Speaking of the VRM.. I think 30 is your default. It is safe to go lower (albeit going too low will cause a system crash) while I would advise against increasing the value. Go bit by bit and see how much it affects your cpu Also you cannot directly reset settings - instead you have to apply a preset which has the settings of default.. or restart windows Also I cannot say what the best settings are as workloads differ from one person to the other - that is why I try to explain the process so anyone can tune it to their preferences

That way the GPU has more heat headroom to boost to higher clock speed (under the assumption that the now slower CPU can still follow up) Keep in mind that long boost > short boost > TDP

Well that depends on what the bottleneck is... If the gpu is maxed there is nothing more to do; you can only reduce the cpu frequency to reduce temperature and hope that maybe the gpu can reach higher clock due to reduced thermals If the cpu is the bottleneck.. let it reach higher temperature so it can work with higher frequency This programe is more about a bit of decreasing performance for a significant drop in heat than it is for increasing performance. Simply the way electronics work

Hi! Recently got myself a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ARH05 (82EY00EDPB) laptop. Which Ryzen Controller settings (TDP, temp, e.t.c.) would you recommend that'll keep CPU at reasonable temp? Specs: - AMD Ryzen 5 4600H (6C/12T, 3.0/4.0GHz, 3MB L2/8MB L3) - NVIDIA GTX 1650Ti 4GB GDDR6 - RAM 8GB DDR4-3200 Apart from all laptop will be used for gaming and video editing. Спасибо!

The 4600H at 15W can hold 2.8-3ghz And at 45W 3.9ghz. Imagine the curve Anyway, I have the same cpu and for gaming I use... 70C Tdp 15W Long boost 20W Short boost 17W For video editing Tdp 25W Long boost 35W Short boost 30W Quite frankly I don't see the point of 45W; as the move from 35 to 45 barely awards 0.2ghz in additional performance. What would help you quite a bit would be dual-channel memory; as the cpu does benefit from it Just be careful when getting ram; look for JEDEC 3200mhz otherwise both ram sticks will downclock to 2133mhz. And no, crucial DOES NOT have 3200jedec but instead via XMP. It is false advertising. As a fact (and bought and tested myself), kingston has the appropriate ram modules. P.s. feel free to modify my values if necessary, they are just a reference point :D

Performance mode will simply let your components clock higher (causing more heat and causing the fans to spin faster to mitigate the heat) You can use RC but you don't have to - it is simply here to control the cpu to reduce total heat output (which is good for gaming as games are rarely bottlenecked by the cpu)

Keep in mind that many other factors may effect performance such as single channel memory, background applications, WINDOWS UPDATE THAT DIGS ITS WAY UP FROM HELL EVERY FORSAKEN DAY and finally some games just really want a lot of cpu horsepower. Gtx 1650 is low-mid tier but it is a LOT stronger than the rx560x hahhh The reason why the framerate drops in my examples were negligible is because for them - the gpu was the bottleneck But but.. considering that you've said that it had always happened, it is actually as youve said - most likely the gpu. Experiment with it a bit, half the graphics settings but limit framerate, see if the fps drops still occur. If they don't, you merely have to adjust your settings for the gpu Also a sidenote, generally the most taxing things in gaming are; resolution, AA, shadow quality, SSAO (if applicable) and particles Reducing all of these but the resolution should yield great performance improvements at the cost of almost no visual fidelity

Regarding the fans.. you can slow them down by increasing the maximum temperature limit (not recommended), reducing performance or if you're feeling adventurous you can apply higher quality thermal paste. Cooling pads or anything that might raise the laptop from the surface might help (to open it up for better airflow) Sadly, laptops are doomed to loud fans when paired with performance

@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Yes, it can be but it isn't really beneficial for gaming It is a very short clock boost (which might not improve performance at all), furthermore, when talking about heat as an issue, that lets call it super boost as it is higher than standard boost, will produce insane ammounts of heat (heat increases almlst exponentially at higher clock rates while performance increases linearly) Finally, for most of the games even the stock clock will do fine, let alone long boost The way I do it is just more power efficient Regarding the 100c First it depends on whether there is a hard temp limit imposed on your laptop, if so, it won't reach 100c at all However, 100C is usually a hard limit and will instantly cause thermal throttling! Speaking of lower temps, the temp limit should work but might not be as intened as the cpu and the gpu are on the same heatsink, meaning if the gpu provides more heat, the cpu will mitigate some of the heat on itself. It those scenarios a reduction of tdp might help a bit Lastly, id like to point out that the discord of ryzen controller focuses more on pure power while I focus on efficiency, both are valid in my opinion and serve their purpose

To be precise, you can use the VRM current without causing damage - and if it still works, no damage has been done. Imagine it like this.. The TDP options limit the CPU according to the heat while the VRM according to the power input. While protections are in place for both ways, high heat will simply shut down the system while high electrical current will destroy the components. To answer your question - it won't affect it if used short-term with small changes in values. Some time later I'll be making in-depth videos on the PC components themselves and electronics in general which might explain why do I advise against higher electrical currents

@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
That is a double edged sword In theory, the U series should be more efficient on lower frequency clocks but OEM's commonly use that "advantage" to simply make cheaper, thus less efficient cooling solution. In reality... Get the H series which runs at 45W, let it run at 35 or 30W and still enjoy high clock speed while retaining less heat. You will have no issues making a 45W cpu run at 30W but you might have a lot of heat issues making a 15W cpu run at ~30W Edit: the temperatures should be about the same (due to the OEM thing explained above) whilst the H class will outperform the U class. Also be sure to check specific laptop reviews as sometimes certain models have great cooling solutions. Also also, keep in mind that the U class is by no means weak, but ofcourse if performance is imperative, H class all the way

Alright I'll try to explain everything Case 1) setting cpu to 99% will limit your cpu to 99% of base clock (2.1ghz) - as you've said it will not boost due to the restrictions Case 2) is self explanatory However. Case 2 will result in 35-40W max -> which in turn thermal throttles after some time; meaning that if you're setting to even higher, you'll just hit the temp limit in an instant and exit boost state immediately and reach 2.1ghz down again You'll want to reduce tdp to range of 20-30 instead of increase... Also short tdp should be less than the long but more than the cpu tdp (cpu tdp < short < long) And ofc auto reapply to a reasonable number as settings tend to reset back P.s. haven't tried apex on the r5 3550h but I did achieve 60 constant in titanfall 2 (same engine!) on 20W tdp

I usually use Tdp 20 Tdp long (boost) 25 And tdp short 23 If it isn't enough (especially since you have 8 instead of 6 cores), feel free to increase all values equally to accommodate for the performance needed (The default tdp values for your cpu are 45-54W (with some OEM'S going all the way to 80W, which I would avoid by all means)

Sadly you cannot undervolt on windows; only linux woth other programmes Reducing voltage will just flat-out starve the cpu and will push the frequency down (It is the voltage of the motherboard supply to the cpu but not of the cpu itself; meaning supply is reduced but demand remains the same)

Hello Few possible reasons Some laptops simply don't want to modify temperature value. Workaround is reducing tdp a bit. This is especially true for those with special software regarding performance profiles such as asus armoury. Also, if during gaming the temperature goes above your temp limit, keep in mind that the cpu and gpu are on the same heat sink - meaning that the gpu will most likely heat your cpu above the level you've set Hope this helps

And it is only for simple tasks Temp 70C; all TDP at 7W 2) Normal web browsing and 1080p video Temp 70C: all TDP at 12W 3) light gaming Temp 70C; TDP 15W; boost 17W; boost tdp min 16W 4) heavy gaming Temp 75C; TDP 20W; boost 23W; boost tdp min 21W 5) videoediting and such (max performance) Temp 85C; TDP 30; boost 35; boost min 32 Keep in mind that I'm using only TDP modifications and no VRM ones. The room I'm in is usually always at about 25C so it suits my settings I'd also like to point out that while these settings work for me, they might not be ideal for you and tweaking is required. Is it really safe to put your tdp into 7w only? I thought the minimum for this cpu is 12w?
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. With lowering the TDP we are lowering the performance (and with it the voltage). The worst thing that can happen is a unresponsive system (which is fixed by restarting). You cannot damage your chip by slowing it down. The 12W minimum is just the wattage it is rated at to run without slowdowns. The only reason I use 7W is because I am writting in MS Word (or reading) quite often - and this way I can make the chip cool enough to disable the fans. The downside is that the cpu is clocked at about 0.7ghz. Point being - it suits me but it might not suit other people

@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
Literally, it will only change the temperature limit To explain in depth Fan curve is set by the OEM so you can't change that one - and it is regulated by either temperature alone or temperature and frequency. That being said, if you set 60C 1) cpu will exit boost as soon as it hits 60 (meaning back to stock speed 2) if your fan curve is regulated by heat itself, they won't even spin up all that much as 60 in laptop environments is considered great (for whatever reason) With the fans being slower than expected at full power you can expect a fall in performance but also.. well a drastic fall in heat (as it is limited to 60C) You have to understand the parameters for this programe to be efficient Fan regulated by cpu temperature (+ potentially frequency) Boost regulated by max temperature (which keep in mind, if you set i.e. 80C but your mobo can handle 75; you aren't getting past 75c) Boost frequency and stock frequency regulated by heat output (tdp options)

hi, im thinking of getting a huawei honor magicbook pro 2020 with the ryzen 7 4800H. however, im also considering the lenovo yoga slim 7 with the ryzen 7 4800U. huawei says average battery life on the magicbook is 11 hours (56Whr batt) on 1080p playback, while lenovo says average battery life on the magicbook is 17 hours (60.7Whr batt). im assuming that the magicbook has a shorter battery life due to the 45W TDP 4800H compared to the 15W TDP 4800U of the slim 7. given this, is it possible to extend the battery life on the magicbook by reducing the 45W TDP of the 4800H to 15W using ryzencontroller? are there any pros and cons to this? i want the longer battery life of the slim 7 but it is just so impossible to get so im looking into the magicbook as a competent alternative. hoping for a quick reply from anyone. thanks
@HamsterHaris
@HamsterHaris 3 жыл бұрын
Long answer incoming You can extend the battery life of the huawei one with the ryzen controller although keep in mind the following 1) you lose performance for the watts you reduce 2) if you set the H class (45W) cpu to 15W just like the U class - the U class will outperform the H class despite both having 15W. Reason being that U class are hand picked as the ones in production that ended up more efficient. Some factors to consider more. -The lenovo one has a slightly higher capacity battery. -If either of these has a dedicated gpu that one will have shorter battery life because devices draw power even when idle -This one is very important! Take their measurements of battery time with a grain of salt. Most testing is usually done in impossible conditions or are exaggerated. Try to find reviews of the specific models and see if their claims are truly correct P.S. If you've really set your eyes on one device and believe it is perfect for your needs, don't settle for anything less Just my advice

The gtx will always drain more battery than the 5600h, so that is the biggest power waster (next to the screen itself) Regarding 5600h, you can maintain a good score with limiting all the tdp values 20-30. That is sufficient for all cores to reach stock clock and for 2 cores to reach max boost clock

I tried to set it to 15 and lower but it affects the performance so badly to the point that I was experiencing a lot of stuttering in games. Note that 2500u has a cTDP of 12-25 watts so if you want to lower your temperature you need to set your tdp lower than 25 watts. Don't go lower than 12 because if you do that you will starve your CPU and badly hurt your performance. There have really been a lot of comments with acer laptops causing issues and so far the only solution was either the reduction of TDP OR reduction of VRM current. It seems that something somewhere on those forsaken motherboards is cooking. Your solutions are good and logical. If you're feeling adventurous you could reduce the VRM from 45 (i believe that is the default for your apu) to 40. P.S. regarding presets, there aren't any perfect ones. They really depend on your workload. I.e I will be using 5-7W for browsing, 15W for older games such as age of mithology, 25W for Apex and 40W for video editing (using 4600h)

I don't understand your question all that much so I will answer all. The settings you get once you open ryzen controller for the first time are not necessarily the ones for your cpu! You didn't say what your apu is.. If you have an H or HS class apu 25 is lower than the stock settings and will reduce the heat output by quite a lot at the cost of some performance If you have a U class apu you above your stock settings and will gain performance at the cost of additional heat output (for as long as you don't reach the point for thermal throttling)
