From the age of 7 he spent summers in North Carolina with his uncle, who encouraged him to read and study. He was introduced to hip hop at age 9 and by age 11 he was competing in rap battles. He relocated to Steubenville, Ohio in 1990, to live with his mother, but spent weekends in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where his father ran a convenience store. RZA got involved with petty crime and drug-dealing, and was charged with attempted murder while in Steubenville. He was acquitted, giving him - in his own words - a "second chance". In 1985 RZA formed the group "DMD Posse" together with Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, U-God, Inspectah Deck, 4th Disciple and Method Man. In 1992 he was involved in a shoot-out in Ohio and faced eight years in jail, but he was acquitted and finally said goodbye to anything that could put him in that situation again. That same year RZA, two of his cousins (GZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard) and five childhood friends formed a new group called "𝗪𝘂-𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝗻". They all chose new nicknames, and Robert Diggs changed from "Prince Rakeem" to "RZA". The group's debut album "Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)" was released in 1993, and over time has become one of the most highly regarded albums in hip hop. RZA operated as the Clan's de facto leader, producing the group's songs and deciding who would get placed on which tracks. The 2004 Wu-Tang Manual book described his rule over the Clan as "a dictatorship". The Wu-Tang Clan released 7 more albums, and RZA also released 6 solo studio albums under his pseudonym "𝗕𝗼𝗯𝗯𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹". The Clan became one of the most well respected groups in hip hop history, and RZA established himself as one of hip hop's greatest producers. In 1994 he also became a founding member of the horrorcore group "𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗮𝘇", where he went by the name "The RZArector". RZA has also been actively involved in filmmaking, producing the soundtracks for Tarantino's "𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗶𝗹𝗹" flims. He also wrote, directed or acted in numerous other films and TV shows, including "The Man with the Iron Fists" (2012), "American Gangster" (2007), and "Brick Mansions" (2014). RZA is considered an "encyclopedia of martial arts films" due to his knowledge of the genre. His second well-known hobby is chess.
