Like many other Russian air defense systems, S400 seems to be highly centralized. It depends a lot on many sensors being networked together, to detect and track targets as well as fire missiles. Because the missiles are so dependent on sensors, and enemy strategy would be to try to attack or fool the sensors. Why destroying enough sensors in the network, the missiles would become useless. If you could locate the command vehicle and somehow sabotage it, you could also cripple all the launchers as well. Several years ago, in the midst of the Syrian Civil War, one of the many rebel groups attempted this, basically trying to attack in air base protect it by a Russian system. They used inexpensive drones to try to over well the network. Unfortunately, the drones were so cheaply crudely made that attack proved ineffective. At the same time, millions of dollars worth of missiles were fired a drone carrying hand grenades. Too bad the attack wasn’t backed up by another barrage of crude drones. Nations like the United States and Israel are actively trying to build networks of decoy vehicles to trigger and over response by systems like the S 400. Can the air defense system discriminate between a target drone and a real attack aircraft? Hard to say.

I think you’re thinking of the patriot… s-400 wouldn’t be used against small, slow, low-flying target because it would make no logistical or economical sense. Those kinds of threats would be relegated to BUKs, TORs and Pantsirs, which use much cheaper and shorter range munitions. S-400s are basically reserved for ballistic/cruise missiles and fixed/rotary wing aircrafts. But otherwise, yeah… being networked means the exact opposite of what you’re implying. The system can draw on data from a huge number of different radars which can’t effectively be all targeted, let alone destroyed (including mobile ones). It actually means it’s incredibly resilient.
@Rrgr5 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say useless, those systems have redundancy, probably will be less effective, but not useless, the US had that arrogance around the S-75 in the Vietnam War, they were shocked when they discovered that jammers and radar busting wasn't enough since the system had a less accurate manual mode that could cause a lot of damage regardless, and those brought down some B-52s, enough to make the US resort to diplomacy, even in the worst case scenario those were dangerous.
@redrust3 Жыл бұрын
@@Rrgr5 True! it forced US to reconsider its tactics. Most large bombers now carry standoff weapons, like cruise missiles and various guided bombs. Fast, maneuverable fighter aircraft, might carry dumb free-fall bombs. Stealth aircraft carry weapons on deep penetration raids over enemy territory. HARM missiles seem effective against all radar, especially those assigned to S 300, S 400, and S 500 radars. Without these radars, the longer range Russian SAMs are useless. NATO doctrine says to destroy the electronic sensor first, then destroy tactical assets. Ukraine is a little different. They use HIMARS to destroy tactical assets like headquarters, ammunition supplies, and troop barracks. We’ll see how well these tactics work in the coming weeks. At this time Russian Air Force is using dumb weapons like bombs and rockets on the front lines. Guided missiles and larger drones are used to attach civilians. So far the 200000 fresh Ukrainian troops intended for the spring counterattacks have not been harmed at all. So says Yvgeny Prigozhin. Curious. I thought the Russians had better satellites.

With all the connection between the Saudi armed forces & US defence contractors in SA you would think it would it would be easy for the US to gain what ever was needed to appreciate all the details of the S400 system. The S400 system is made up of many components to work effectively. Destabilising one component may cripple the whole system. Either degrade the radar coverage, command & control or just launching enough drones to attack the system until the system was unable to re load the launchers in a timely manner. It comes down to making drones cheaper than SAM missiles. Interesting to hear from EF18 Growlers & the Wild Weasel community on this topic.

A good friend of mine works with modernizing Russian weaponry (not in Russia) for re-export. Including BUK, S-300 and etc, they also produce their own derivatives from time to time. His exact area is target detection, and he has always been very straight on that with me. He says that in terms of hardware Russian STA weaponry is quite ok, no real objections, except excessive weight. Everything is mostly in place and seems like reliable. It is, however, software, which is 'complete uncomprehensive low-quality enormous pile of crap'. He's always been laughing on the so-called 'Russian' digital tech inside their weapons, since they're either old Soviet (which are basically copies), or new American - literally Intel processors where processors are and other non-Russian electronic components repackaged into military casing. He also used to say that as a means of modernization, they had to literally rewrite every piece of code they could from scratch. I tend to trust him, y'know.

All the analyzes about Türkiye are wrong. Critical information about the S-400s is missing. The USA's decision to exclude Turkey from the F-35 program was on the morning of July 15, 2016. The failed coup attempt to consolidate the West's almost 100-year-long control over Turkey was bloodily suppressed with the help of the people. When Americans started to be liquidated in Turkey, the USA decided to exclude Turkey from the F-35 program. The US economy was most affected by this, and there were problems in the supply of F-35s, and the planes began to crash due to chronic problems. The plane called F-35 is a US weapon, at the end of the day, the definition of friend and enemy is made by the US and every country that flies this plane has to comply with this. F-35 is a 5th generation 'ghost' aircraft that the USA sold to its 'allies'. not more. Therefore, these planes were given to Greece, which is a US proxy.(Greece's 'duty' is to declare the entire Aegean Sea as its own, based on islands that are thousands of kilometers from Greece and 500 meters from the Turkish mainland, and declare war on Turkey, which does not accept this when the time comes) S-400 was an excuse. Turkey knew the embargoes it would face and was already out of hell on July 15 2016. They created an air defense umbrella whose ceiling was made up of S-400s. They nationalized almost all US-origin systems. Despite the visible and invisible embargoes and sanctions of the West. Russians saw that those who shot down their own planes and assassinated Andrey Karlov crushed their own people with tanks, bombed them, and threw a bomb into their parliament on July 15 2016. For years, the USA desperately tried to put pressure on its 'allies' Turkey to return the S-400s to Russia. In fact, a US senator proposed a bill to purchase Russian-made S-400 missile defense systems from Turkey. You mentioned the ineffectiveness of S-400's 400 km missiles against warplanes. There is no such thing because the target of S-400's long-range missiles is strategic bombers and large aircraft such as AWACs.

@aritakalo80113 жыл бұрын
It won't be below radar horizon, if the radar is high up in the missile and nearer. I would assume the below radar horizon capability applies to the active seeker missile. At which point the target won't be below radar horizon, since the radar is flying along with the missile. Such missile in networked system can be launched with out lock-on with command link guidance based on target point the main radar at battery don't see at all and then at suitable distance commanded to activate seeker and search for lock on. Lock-on After Launch.

Armenia does not have S-400 and S-300. It is too expensive to waste the missiles of these systems to shoot down drones. So...The Karabakh conflict showed, first of all, not the superiority of the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 in the air, but the Armenian side's overestimation of its forces and the poor organization of defense on the ground Military operations in the 21st century cannot be "cheap and angry", and yet individual technological "chips" in the form of attack drones do not promise victory. A decisive role is played by the entire system of the military organization of the state, including the potential of the defense industry, arsenals, and logistics capabilities. The Karabakh conflict showed, first of all, not the superiority of the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 in the air, but the Armenian side's overestimation of its forces and the poor organization of defense on the ground. After the ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh, a lot of evaluative publications appeared in the media space, the content of which can be condensed into two simple statements: Azerbaijan won because it had Turkish drones, but Armenia did not; Russian "heavy" air defense systems are becoming useless in today's "drone war". Such a simplified approach is explained by the relatively abstract military-technical knowledge of experts, as well as by a huge number of illustrative examples of the defeat of Armenian military equipment and personnel. However, reality is always more complex than our ideas about it. There are no miracles in the world, any movie is made according to the director's idea. The videos filmed by the Bayraktar and other UAVs of the Azerbaijani army in Karabakh initially served to undermine the enemy's morale and promote Turkish drones on the world arms market. At the same time, "empty flights" and misses, the defeat of dozens of drones by means of air defense (air defense) and electronic warfare (EW) remained behind the scenes. Careless self-confidence A properly organized, layered air defense system is capable of neutralizing any swarm of enemy drones, and electronic reconnaissance means in a matter of seconds give out the coordinates of the combat control points of loitering ammunition (for fire destruction). Meanwhile, the single air defense systems of the Armenian troops deployed in Karabakh did not provide reliable cover not only because of the "outdated" characteristics. The level of organization of the service, the lack of a system also affected. Note that "Strela-10" and "Osa-AKM" are air defense systems of the 1960s, sometimes they did not reach the "Bayraktars" at an eight-kilometer height. And modern complexes "Tor-M2KM" (short-range) and "Buk-M2E" (medium-range) protected only Yerevan and the Metsamor nuclear power plant. Another problem is the neglect of camouflage means on the ground, separate military objects seemed to shout: "Kill me!" (one direct hit into the headquarters tent with a flag on the mast can make several units uncontrollable, and this is hundreds or even thousands of military personnel on the battlefield). On the other hand, when Turkish drones began to "accidentally" fly from Karabakh to the border territory of the Republic of Armenia, there properly organized air defense and electronic warfare systems shot down the UAVs without any problems. Soon the drones stopped flying (control points may have suffered as well). The 1994 military victory formed and over the years strengthened the myth of the invincibility of the Armenian troops in the Karabakh direction. Only this can explain the absence of serious engineering structures on the 100-kilometer line from the Araks River to the Mrava mountain range. The trenches and firing points open from above, and separate dugouts are examples of fortifications from the beginning of the last century. The Armenian side did not take care of long-term firing points (made of reinforced concrete) and a network of underground communications, although there was quite enough time - more than 25 years (remember the tunnels of militants in Syria, built with a minimum of technical means). Syrian and Libyan experience Returning to the topic of combat competition between Russian air defense systems and Turkish drones, one can recall the "drone fall" in the airspace of Syria and Libya - as a result of the professional use of the Tor-M2KM, Buk-M2E and Sosna anti-aircraft missile systems. The Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system demonstrated the same high efficiency. If these complexes were deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh in a timely manner, they would not have left the Turkish "Bayraktar" any chance. Judge for yourself. The Tor-M2KM air defense missile system is equipped with eight missiles with a firing range of up to 15 km and an interception height of up to 10 km, capable of detecting and shooting down subtle targets (EPR - up to 0.02 square meters). Simultaneously detects up to 48 targets, accompanies ten and strikes four. The maximum firing range of the Buk-M2E air defense missile system is 45 km. The interception is carried out at altitudes from 15 meters to 25 kilometers. It is capable of shooting down aerodynamic targets with speeds up to Mach 2.5, and ballistic targets up to Mach 4. Simultaneously fires up to 24 targets (including subtle ones, with RCS up to 0.05 square meters). SAM "Sosna" sees cruise missiles and drones at a distance of up to 12 km, the zone of guaranteed destruction: in range - 1.3-10 km, in height - from 2 meters to 5 kilometers). The fire control system is optical-electronic - the complex does not unmask itself with any radiation. The air defense missile system is capable of operating in automatic mode at any time of the day, in any weather, without the participation of the crew. In the affected area and ground targets, including tanks (there are armor-piercing warheads), the tank is detected at a distance of up to eight kilometers. As part of the peacekeeping operation, Russia has deployed the latest Leer-3 electronic warfare systems to Nagorno-Karabakh. Its main tasks are jamming GSM cellular signals, jamming 3G and 4G networks. The complex consists of one KamAZ vehicle and two or three Orlan-10 UAVs with a range of 120 km (time spent in the air, at altitudes up to 5 km - up to 10 hours). The drone can also detect phones, tablets, conduct reconnaissance, plot data on a digital map and transmit it to artillery crews for a fire strike. The Karabakh conflict is once again frozen, not resolved, and modern reconnaissance and air defense systems have not lost their significance.
