Hi E V E R Y O N E !
This is one of our short R E A L T I M E movies showing recent events.
In this video we share our experiences in this week - all footage was taken this week.
We sail the M A J E S T I C waters of N E W C A L E D O N I A and are joined by friends on their boat 'Jolifou' in Oro and Catamaran 'Blubie' in Gadji.
Both these anchorages are in the Island Of Pines (Ile Des Pins).
These anchorages on the islands whilst majestic, are not always receptive to yachties because the locals (It's a French island but the local people on the outer islands have a say) want to keep their waters pristine.
We hope you enjoy this short video and it is our hope to bring you some happy vibes and a reminder of how beautiful our planet truly is.
Cheers everyone
Impi out.

Hi Simon, I have been asked that a number of times before - I actually have a very 'story telling past' - from School to the Army (we were conscripted in Africa) to starting a business in a country of sanctions, moving to the United States and back to South Africa, Diamond mines, Cancer, Paralysis in an accident that ended up with a brain operation years later, a huge business and it's challenges and always the sea has been what has set me free :) I guess I should look into that sometime - it may be a good memory for my grandkids one day ;)

@CatamaranImpi

Hi Shane - yes - I am type 2. I went onto medication called Jardiance which expels sugar through urine. I found Metformin was causing me many side effects. There is nothing like diet and exercise though, so apart from treating myself to the odd 'Pan au chocolat' I stay well away from foods with sugar and test everyday.

Hi guys, you've probably answered this question before, but I've only just came into watching sailing vids, but why did you opt for an open bridge??
@CatamaranImpi
@CatamaranImpi 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Shane! Yes, we have been asked about the open bridge many times and for good reason really. The bridge actually does have a 'dodger' that folds up to provide a roof and front windscreen to protect one from the elements out there although I seldom put it up since I am one of those sailors who enjoys open air sailing. Some folks with similar vessels have built hardtop canopies with sides and a solid windscreen . On long passages at sea it is not necessary with the technology we have to be upstairs. There is autopilot and inside we have a second 'station' with a remote helm so we can choose if we want to be indoors or outdoors anytime. The main sheet is also controlled on a second electric winch from inside the patio enabling one to release power or sheet it on for mainsail tweaking. What we love about the bridge is the ability to see into the water especially in reef infested areas. Actually, getting to the location where I shot this footage had us sail through a storm that was not predicted - winds were topping 50 knots in gusts and friends of ours on their mono hull 'hove to' waiting for the storm to pass. I was on top of the bridge sailing Impi by reducing sails and in spite of the conditions was able to see where the reefs were and at 9 knots SOG it was comforting to be up there with that visibility and feeling for the power of the conditions in the rig. For all the storms we have sailed through (and we owned a different catamaran before Impi - Catana 471C) I have felt at an advantage being in the open and 'on top' of the craft close to the mainsail and rigging where one can sense the forces at play. No matter the craft, in a storm I am wanting to be out sensing the forces at play on the boat and adjusting lines / halyards / sail area / heading etc. to keep ourselves and the boat safe at sea. For me, the bridge 'on paper' looks like a challenge but in reality it is a huge advantage when sailing the oceans. Cheers and thanks for the interest and for commenting. Brent

Thanks Mike - actually I seldom take underwater footage because I am a bit useless at capturing it. This dive had tunnels, caves with ceilings that have spiderweb cracks allowing the sun to stream through etc. etc. and somehow I ust could not capture it well. I took my Canon down in the waterproof housing to see if I could get better shots and the on off button engaged under pressure at 20m and remained engaged - lol - I just could not get it to toggle until I surfaced. You dive in fantastic waters Mike ... and yes, the water clarity here is also great on a calm day.

@@CatamaranImpi Brent a gopro 4 onwards takes decent underwater shots "if" you do the following - use a red filter over the lens And use an L arm to mount the go pro on. Both these are cheaply found on line etc. The L arm which is a simple ali bar bent mounts the go pro on the bottom and you hold on the side (foam on the handle) this helps hugely in keeping the camera stable and taking the shake out. The red filter brings back all the colours as without it images are mainly blue. 2 simple things to do which will change your underwater footage dramatically in terms of quality

Question: why do so few KZbin sailing channels feature a sail to New Caledonia...it looks beautiful...
@CatamaranImpi
@CatamaranImpi 5 жыл бұрын
Robby, that is a G R E A T question. Ana and I sailed all the way from South Africa visiting many beautiful regions of the world and we fell in love with New Caledonia which few sailors who fly through these waters do. This is our 4th return to New Caledonia! Many sailors tell us they pass through rather quickly because the wind is blowing and they get stuck in a marina, but in reality the islands are so well scattered that one can sail in pretty much any direction with the wind and find a great spot. The area is vast although it looks small on a 'map', it is reef infested which is beautiful but is very worrying for a number of sailors. Personally I find the charts are accurate enough and used with a program like SAS PLanet it really makes sailing here safe. Sailors say the 'islanders' are not very friendly which was our initial thought too, but as one gets to know them they open up. Food is also very expensive and many sailors complain that it chews into their 'cruising budget'. One can find almost any French food here and I believe New Caledonia has more Porches sold per head than any other country in the world .... they are rich in Nickel although demand and pricing is down right now. Another issue is the visa issue. I believe for some countries long term visas are not possible so international yachts find it difficult to really get to know these parts. I considered changing my residency from South Africa to New Caledonia and in consultation with immigration attorneys discovered that they have a very high tax rate - in fact they do not have 'tax alliances' with other countries so in effect we would be subject to 'double tax' for money generated offshore. I mention this because it seems to me that New Caledonia are not encouraging people to move here. New Caledonia does have some issues where the local island folks sometimes chase sailors on - they say it's because they want to keep their waters pristene but I think it's more political than that. It's their space though, so we respect them for the decisions they take, and so far we have not had drama with anchoring where want to unless a number of yachts arrive and then the locals want it cleared out. From when we first visited these waters until now, there has been a huge increase in the number of yachts arriving here. Sadly, I do fear it may become a busy destination, but I think more so for the sailors who can afford to be here. I hope this provides some answers -I am going on what many sailors have told me about not wanting to cruise in New Caledonia. To be honest, it's a region NOT TO BE MISSED ! So far some of the places I have loved most is of course New Caledonia, The Tuamotu Atolls (we did 2 seasons there) and The Bahamas were also nice (although more busy with boats). New Caledonia has all the beauty of these places but so much more diversity like huge mountains, rivers, birds and bird song to name a few additional attractions and one is never far from great supplies.

Catamaran Impi Thank you for that very thoughtful and timely response...based off your channel, when I retire and get a sailboat of my own, New Caledonia will definitely be on my list....another question...a few years back...I watched one of your episodes where your wife and yourself take a beautiful dinghy ride into a river well inland...(I hope this is enough information)...but I’d like to watch it again, but can’t seem to find it...

Hi Pius and thank you again! Yes, we had hoped to see you in Australia but we have been having way too much fun here. I must say though that the weather is starting to show signs - the GFS models showing up a potential cyclone here end next week or so. The models are in contradiction so we hope GFS is not accurate, but it is time to be sailing out of here for insurance reasons, but on the other hand we have not had great weather windows to Australia recently and Australia also showing us some stormy conditions. So - watching for a window - notified customs in Australia today that we will be on our way!

Ana and Brent, I have always been facisnated by those trees that seem to feature in photos of New Caledonia. I keep thinking 'How can pine trees survive out here?'. What is the species and can you provide close-up shots of the trunk and leaves on your next visit? I am keen to know. A big ask, I know! Thanks for all your great videos over the years and very happy to see you get mentions recently on other sailing vlogs (much deserved recognition). Well deserved. If you ever wish to name your tender...it has to be 'Moose'. His existence broke my heart. Take care both and Happy festivities wherever you may be.

Thank you ! Yes, those trees are fascinating - they are commonly known by locals as 'Colonial pines', some folks refer to them as 'Columnar Pines'. There is a very nice write up about these trees here: www.livingoceansfoundation.org/isle-of-pines/ We are getting ready to depart for Australia but if I get to an island again with those trees I will take close up footage. They are identical to the 2nd photo in the article I link I posted here. We love sharing the dream so it's been a pleasure for us to do so and really pleased you enjoy the vids. Moose was such a special island dog and a great idea to name the tender 'Moose' :) Thanks for the wishes ... we think this may be a bit of a 'missed season for us' in terms of festivities as we probably will be sailing over Ana's birthday and starting to settle into Australia before Christmas ... but for us we treasure each day.
