I used to play with this on my old computer as a kid. I could probably recite this demo without too many prompts. The part about adding it to any basic program was a bit of a stretch. I remember trying this out and the time it took to load SAM from disk meant you were probably going to be sitting there listening to your 1541 chugging away for longer than you'd be using the actual program.

The first PC my family got was an IBM running Windows 3.1 around 1993. It had a text to speech program and I thought it was so cool to be able to type whatever I wanted and have the computer say it. In 1982 it would have been absolutely amazing that a standard home computer could do voice synthesis. I can imagine people in 1982 seeing/hearing S.A.M. in action and thinking "Wow, it is amazing how advanced computers are getting!" Technology was so much more fun and exciting back in the 90s. Things were advancing so fast. For example the Super Nintendo came out in North America in 1991 and had 2D 16-bit graphics that were really good for the time. A huge improvement over the NES from 1985. Just 5 years later the N64 came out. In 5 years we went from the 2D graphics of Super Mario World to a fully 3D platformer with Mario 64. Then around 4 years after that Shenmue was released for the Sega Dreamcast which had AMAZING visuals for the time. It also was amazing how it was an open world game where you could walk into a store and buy stuff or go to the arcade and play some games. So it was only about 9 years from 16-bit Super Mario to fully 3D open world Shenmue. But nowadays when you look at a 10 year old game it really doesn't look all that much different than a current game. The improvements have been getting less and less over the years. Are we getting to the point where graphics can't really improve that much?

Wow!! What a great trip down memory lane. The weird thing is that we are nearly the best graphics we could ever get (hyper realistic), yet many games today seem to focus on voxel, pixel, 80’s-looking graphics. Ugh. No thanks. I think we are close to not being able to tell the difference between actual video and gaming.

There's actually an open source port/clone of sam that you can install on Windows (I think you can compile it for Linux too, but not sure). It also has a web version you can play with thanks to Emscriptem.
