I'm 47 and growing up in Philly, every boy had to learn how to fight, even if you weren't a boxer. You have to slap box, body box. Everybody could fight. If you were to fight someone, you had to give them a 'fair one,' that's a fair fight with your hands. If you knock the man down, you let him get up and continue if he wants to. You live to see another day. This younger generation, don't fight, they just jump each other or just shoot each other and call themselves 'tough.' Nowadays girls fight more than boys.

That position is taught in Daniel Mendoza's "The Art of Boxing" published 1789, which is the first boxing lesson book. He published it as the official text book of his boxing Academy.

ppkrex I can do better than that! BEFORE ANY WRITTEN WORD, SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE LIKELY DEFENDED THEMSELVES BY LOWERING THEIR HEAD AND PUTTING THEIR CHIN BEHIND THE LEAD SHOULDER! MY POINT WAS THE TERM ITSELF "PHILLY SHELL".

I read that but the images shown in the book don't have a bladed stance. Instead they stand very square. Also I don't recall instructions on how to fend off shots being anywhere near the way it's done in the Philly shell

Great video , i am glad a video like this was made to explain the origin to people. This is the way so many people do their research nowadays instead of communicating or reading , so the vid is great.

Hey love your videos. I have a question that i hope somebody can help me out with. Can Someone please explain to me why ANDRE WARD is rated so high in people rankings. You have a better chance of seeing UFOS or Bigfoot than a recent clip of him in action. You but him on your list of boxers who doesnt need trainers. HOW??? What makes him so special?

Actually, I did not know him. It is good however that you were able to relate to him. That is most important.

Experts in the art of "PHILLY SHELL" Georgy Benton, Jersey Joe Walcott, Floyd, James Toney & Jaun Guzman....
@TheUmmahFightCamp8 жыл бұрын
+ILYAS ABDUR-RAHEEM My point was the "ORIGIN" of the NAME. James did NOT call it that. Floyd did NOT call it that. Walcott (Arnold Cream from Camden, NJ) did NOT call it that. Of all of them Benton was the one from philly although Joe was from across the bridge from it. There were several "Experts" I knew who used it in the streets. You mean the experts YOU know.
@MrChozenone18 жыл бұрын
+TheUmmahFightCamp na'am I just love the way they used it ESPECIALLY " Benton"..... I wasn't agreeing or disagreeing with you....... Thanks for the Knowledge........
@TheUmmahFightCamp8 жыл бұрын
+ILYAS ABDUR-RAHEEM One thing I would like for you to know Habibi, disagreeing with me is not an issue with me. All I want is a separation from bias. I'll give you an example: If someone said the greatest featherweight of all time was WILLIE PEP, I would not debate that. If someone else said it was SALVADOR SANCHEZ, I would not debate that either. Understand? When you see me get irritated, it is when people simply follow their heart and get "bent" if I do not. As Sallaamu Alaikum

Im a begginer at boxing and Im quite interested in philly shell, but I realise that its not good for southpaw stance, because it expose too much your liver. Am I right?

Hello! Sorry for the delay. We are always "open" for something. Use whatever style you like and fits and adjust as you spar/fight.

Ive recently come to consider western boxing the "black martial art" do to our influence in presenting "unorthodox" methods into the sport and those methods and techniques eventually becoming fundamental. What are your thoughts? What would boxing look like if blacks never influenced it?

TheUmmahFightCamp Mr Carman. I know that you haven't made a video in a few weeks, but if you ever read this comment, I was wondering could you talk about throwing roundhouse kicks to the outside of your opponents lead knee to off-balance them, almost like a leg sweep. Throwing it in a way so the opponents knee buckles and off balances them. In sparring it's happened to me numerous times but Ive never heard anyone talk about such a tactic, and I want to know how to perfect it to buckle my opponents knee to throw them off balance. Thank you. Much love

Philly shell style the hand position has its roots in Chinese martial arts for instance when Bruce Lee is in a fighting stance he's standing in the Philly shell stance
@TheUmmahFightCamp9 жыл бұрын
The BLADED stance does not have it's origin in any style my friend. It was likely used in the first fist fight about 100,000 years ago. As for Bruce Lee, many people used a side stance Before him.

TheUmmahFightCamp I watched your video on Floyd saying he would get stomped out in a real fight I believe it some people think boxing is fighting its not it's sport in a real heat of the moment spontaneous a real fight is just that nobody's gonna be trading punches
