Is there a more legendary JDM combo than Nissan's SR20 and the S-chassis? Sure, there were plenty of other famous duos like the 4G63 and Evo, EJ20 and WRX, RB and Skyline, 13B and RX-7, 4AGE and AE86 but the sheer numbers and the popularity of the SR20-powered Silvias easily make it the definite JDM Tuner Combo of the late 1990s and early 2000s. What kinda sucks though is that the American market which didn’t get many of these, and the ones it did get, were powered by an asthmatic, naturally aspirated, 2.4L iron block KA24 engine. Arguably the best Silvia of them all, the S15, never even made it to USA. What the heck, Nissan? ----------------------------------------------------------- Liked this video? Fun fact for those who don't know, "zenki" and "kouki" don't specifically refer to Silvias. They're just Japanese terms that effectively refer to different facelifts on any car chassis. Zenki, chuki, and kouki mean early period, middle period, and late period respectively. You could call a ZL Outlander a kouki if you wanted to!

I live in the UK and owned an S14a for 11 years. It wasn't perfect but I loved every mile of the 100k miles I put on it. What a car. Wished Nissan still made these cars.

Great video! I had an imported 1998 S14 K's in New Zealand back in 2008-2010. Easily the best car I've ever had! Back then it was super tidy with low KMs and only cost NZD$9K. Got a 180SX now that requires some work to get registered again, and I can't wait to experience that S chassis feel again through the hills.

Nice hommage to a really good familly of car 😍(Nissan can we please have an "S16" ?) My daily and only car to this date is my Euro 200sx RS13, wich came with an CA18DET (like all euro S13). But since 2016, the little 1.8 let his place for an redtop SR20, with few bolt on and an Elite 1000 it's quite pleasant to drive and reliable. (low 300 hp) She is basically an "190sx", at midpoint between an 200sx and a JDM 180sx. Right now the engine is out for a full service and forged internals to deal with more power to come, but not something to crazy (Limiting factor is still the OEM gearbox).

I still have my 180SX I got it back in 2000 and was my daily driver for 14yrs before I moved to Asia for a new job. Oneday when I return I will give the CA a rebuild and the car a refresh I want to be a grandpa still rockn my S13.

Nice informative content as always, My friend has X-trail GT with 20VET, bought back in 2013 to use as countryside hauler 😂 came with Fujitsubo catback, has 245 000+kms still unopened engine, factory everything, love to see the faces of the occasional tail gaters and aggressive drivers when they see the car scoot past them on full throttle 😂

In the US we got the sr20ve in infiniti G20. The only things we got a sr20de in were the nx2000 and sentra se-r. None turbo powered. Great motors, even without the turbos.

there was a few vvl motors, the p11 primera sr20ve, the pulsar sr16ve, the p12 primera sr20ve which is similar to the xtrail gt sr20vet but with different cams and pistons etc.

I believe, the x-trail gt had 206kw (280 ps) in 4wd form, up from 184kw on the s15. There’s one on gumtree Australia currently. Would be interesting to drive on the dirt.

X-trail got CVT in its T31 model. Pretty sure the SR20s were in T30s which still had the normal, gear-style transmission.

Agreed. The gumtree one is auto. I had a pulsar sss, lowered x-trail, now wrx lol. Apparently the sr29 crank fits in a qr25 to make some frankstein thing :-p

Primera was the source for getting a SR20VE and not really like a pulsar at all (P chassis), the JN15 Pulsar VZR was the one with SR16VE variant.

We did a lot of SR20DET/CA18DET swap in the Bluebird SSS/Primera chassis and in South East Asia there is a Primera station wagon chassis call AD Resort. I think in Japan its California bcoz there are plenty of rear end ½ cuts from Japan with California on its number plate frame.

@@haltech exactly, was cheap enough that if something happened was easy enough to replace now it’s like do I really want to risk it on night run on these tiny roads up here in Tochgi.... and now due to its age the insurance companies will only cover it for third party so it’s not even covered for theft anymore. I’m not exactly sure what the rule is but I’m guess ones it’s over 24 years old as it’s a 1999 and they want cover it anymore like they did the previous years.

Your dumb. US has different car standards for imports. Would need some aspects changed to suit. Meaning more dollars are spent to provide for the US market. Australia/NZ have similar car regulations to Japan which make it easier. US car manufacturers also didn’t want extra competition from popular foreign brands. This also contributes to import/export tax when trying to sell in US. A lot more factors to include too.

Weaknesses of sr20s: pistons. Followed by rods and then the liners need to be secured. By comparison: Volvo b230 weaknesess: rods on early motors, otherwise, upgrade rods and head and 500 reliable hp. Yet, so many people will throw so much money at an sr!
