S D Burman and his Lyric Writers

In this video, Gulzar, Majrooh, Ranjit Gazmer (Kancha), Meena Kapoor (Singer), and Neeraj have spoken about S.D. Burman and his grip on the lyrics written by him.
Gulzar, whom himself is a renowned writer, has gone on record that every each and every lyric writer wrote his best poetry for S.D. Burman. To a pointed question, “Did he mean that Shailendra, who wrote regularly for Shankar-Jaikishan, wrote better lyrics for Burman Dada”, Gulzar said ‘Yes’.
S.D. Burman was pioneer in composing tune first, and asking the poet to write to the meter of his tune. He realized way back in his Calcutta days before coming to Bombay (Mumbai) that there were limitations on the composer if there were pre-existing words. Watch video ‘S.D. Subsequently, two of our geniuses, Begum Akhtar and Gulzar, have gone on record ‘Sur’ or tune is more important than poetry. Read Below:
Begum Akhtar

Gulzar:
“I believe that in any song that becomes a hit, the primary factors are the rhythm and the tune. The words follow. In fact, the quality of the words depends on how much it matches the melody and the beat. That is why I consider the role of the lyricist as secondary to that of the composer.”

Many fans of Dada including me, always wait for new videos uploaded by you. I was so happy by seeing new video notification today (June 11) but that was deleted by some copyright issue related to zee. Now feeling sad. I wish to see each and every interview about Dada even don't want to miss a single word said by anyone about Dada. Even for me music means RD Burman at first, but I can see that Dada is the greatest music director of all time. No one can be like him

@ The Chief, Thanks for interesting comments. You are not alone who after viewing these videos are of the opinion that there is indeed no one like SD Burman, as a composer, and as a human being. I, along with my colleagues, am in the midst of of editing with subtitles a biography in Bangla created by Shri Girindra Majumdar who has won several awards due to his research on SD Burman and his music. In the first part itself Purnendu Dev Burman from royal family, and a nephew of Dada recounts how he visited Dada in Bombay and saw lot of audio tapes. On questioning, Dada told him that he had archived his tunes for Rahul to use them later. The video of 'Lyricist Gopaldas Neeraj on SD Burman Part ll' had been on KZbin for couple of years, when Zee guys decided to block it due to 30 second clip Sharmeelee song 'Megha chhaye'. There were 2 other songs of Shemaroo who don't block but claim any money it may earn money, which in case I don't claim. I'll recommend you download all these videos so that you have them for ever. Lalwani ji I am a big fan of Dev Anand and S.D. Burman sir, could you tell me which was their first Film together? And in how many film did they work together?

@bijender singh rawal SD Burman scored music for 28+1 films where Dev was the hero. Plus one is for the English version of Guide, directed by Tad Danielewsky. Their pairing started with Girish Trivedi’s Suraiya starrer Vidya in 1948 and their last film together was in 1973 Navketan’s Vijay Anand-directed, Hema-starrer Chhupa Rustam. Lalwani ji one more question arose in my mind , as I watched the video of Lyricist Yogesh and U.K. Dubey ji they said Dada refused Dev saheb to compose music in his films after Prem Pujari, but he gave the music in films like Tere mere sapne, Ye gulsitha hamara , Gambler and chupa rustam. I have heard he refused to compose the music of 'Hare Rama hare Krishna' because it required Western music then this movie went to R.D. Burman but what about 'Ishq Ishq Ishq' this movie was most suitable for Dada's music because of hilly background. Was Dada refused to do it?

@@bijendersinghrawal5999 The real reason Dada didn’t compose the music of Hare Rama Hare Krishna was to pass it on to son RD. Dada had similarly passed on a number of films to son to boost his career. During the creation of Dum maro dum song Dada was there. Dada knew Western music very well.

"I have read that Shailendra was second choice for Guide, as probably hero and director were not happy with two songs composed out of lyrics from first choice. Can you throw light on it including mentioning the name of first choice. No offence intended."

@rumahale, Coming from you, it's a big compliment. Thanks. Hasrat Jaipuri had been selected for Guide with approval of all three, Dev, Goldie and SDB. One song was recorded too, but afterwards it was not liked. Dada spoke to Hasrat that he had to come up with something better, his earlier lyrics were rejected. Hasrat lost his cool, blurting, "Is bharve (pimp) ke liye aur kya likhoon. Dada didn't like such language, and conveyed to Dev and Goldie. They all decided to terminate Hasrat after paying him his dues, as he had not understood the main character of the film. Shailendra was called as suggested by Dada. The film's tremendous success is mainly due to its music, lyrics and direction. (As narrated to me by Anitaa Padhye, author of Marathi book, 'Ek Hota Goldie'. Anitaa has a done a tremendous job of interviewing Goldie and has in support some 45 recorded audio tapes of her interview with him.)
