Süddeutschland: "Meet the Germans"-Roadtrip Teil 2/4 | Meet the Germans

Rachel begibt sich für Meet the Germans auf einen Roadtrip durch Deutschland. Zweiter Stopp: der Süden. Zwischen Bodensee, Neuschwanstein, München und Schwäbischer Alb erkundet Rachel Bayern und Baden-Württemberg, kostet typische Spezialitäten von Brotzeit bis Käsespätzle und lernt ein paar wichtige neue Vokabeln, die man in Süddeutschland kennen sollte.
Die gebürtige Britin Rachel Stewart lebt seit 2016 in Deutschland und lernt noch immer Neues und Überraschendes über die Deutschen und ihre Kultur. Für Meet the Germans taucht sie ein in den deutschen Alltag - und mit wahren Kulturschätzen wie "Bier", "Schrebergärten" oder "Brot" wieder auf. Aber auch kontrovers diskutierte Themen wie "Deutsche Digitalisierung" oder "Voll emanzipiert? Frauen in Deutschland" gehören natürlich zu Meet the Germans dazu.

As a north german born but Berlin living German I can confirm that the south got nice landscape and food and mostly nice people. I can't get used to the dialect spoken down there (nor in the east). Sometimes I feel like southern germans are little "posh" where the north and east is more down to earth. But who cares, I like the beer at Oktoberfest. Greetings from a Saupreissn ;)

Re: Octoberfest. It should have been mentioned that the Octoberfest originated as the wedding celebration of Crown Prince Louis and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen, lending it the name "Theresienwiese". The historical perspective of it is that at the time - 1810 - Europe's map was being redrawn by Napoleon's army, and Bavaria included the area of Rheinland-Pfalz. For those interested, I recommend the multi-parter "1900", available at the ARD Mediathek, a sprawling fictionalized look at the politics behind the party at the turn of the century.

South Germany and the Rhine is more like France, Austria or Northern Italy, while everything else in the North is more like the Netherlands or Denmark.
