By the time these come to market they have thoroughly been combed over, that is of course unless you happen to live in the wild in Russia and have a metal detector, thats where all these come from. After all the years in the ground being hard packed the explosive charge in the middle resembles one of those cans of instant juice you keep frozen in your refrigerator, a few years ago there was a video on youtube of some guys in Russia disarming these things and they put that solid hunk of TNT out of one of these in the 'Y' of this big tree and detonated it, it was impressive to say the least.

These mines were bad for moral during WW2, designed to mutilate rather than kill, allied soldiers hated them because they detonated at about the same height off the ground as the average standing man's nutsack. It is likely that they deprived a lot of men of fatherhood after the war. In the book Monte Casino, ten armies in hell the author writes 'The dreaded S-mine was even more frightening, about the size of a tin can and called the Bouncing Betty by the Americans (more accurately called the 'de-bollocker' by the British'.) and then goes on to describe them in use.

@@Stray03 Thanks for the reply, yeah like i was saying i ended up buying a nice little kit that comes with all kinds of ball bearings and i found that 3 mm bearing fit in that hole but if you dont have the plunger spring in there they fall thru and if you try 3.5 mm they dont fit,lol,thats very strange because when it come to mm thats how it works,2/2.5/3/3.5 and so forth, i mean the fuze works great now but i cant just put the little balls in there like you do,i have to have the plunger spring in there to keep them in place, the Germans must have had a bastard size ball bearing in there and the hole has some kind of chamfer so the little balls dont fall thru?
@Stray033 жыл бұрын
@@dntlss they will fall through which is why I keep them sideways. a good trick I learned in my job is to put some petroleum jelly on the bearings so they stick a bit more and won't fall out while trying to install striker. They must have used a special jig to install the stuff easier.

Dont have a tellermine unfortunately. Infact I dont even have the t.mi.z42 or 43 fuzes to show those. Best I can do is a t.mi.z 35 fuze

A bouncing Betty lol. People back in the day gave cute names to dangerous stuff. Even the name “Tank” was supposed sound non threatening as to not alert enemy forces that they are actually building an armored meat grinder.
@Stray034 жыл бұрын
Lol yeah. They wanted the enemy to believe they were making water tanks or something of that nature.

Probably although it would dumb down the video for people and make a fake explosion that makes people think that hollywood explosions happen.

I always find complex items made before plastic and polymers took over much more interesting. So much energy and materials were used for the smallest of things, but that’s just how life was then.

Where did you get your S mine? I'm having a hard time finding a inert one with the internal parts and ball bearings.

Right time right place for me met someone who was actually willing to sell it to me. Since then I have seen some complete ones sold on ebay, and people from europe in fb ordnance groups seem to sell them once in a while. I dont know what import laws are for mines here so I dont risk it. Maybe where you come from they have clear rules about it.
@tothemachines74795 жыл бұрын
@@Stray03 I finally found one kept looking but it's well worth it for my collection, talked to a few people from Europe that had complete ones with orginal ball bearing, and found out it's a real pain to get them imported to the U.S. The one I found comes with a certificate of authenticity. I might try to make a mock charge out of wood to complete it. Thank you for replying.

Yeah. But for the cost of those mines it isnt worth it since you can get the same effect out of more efficient designs.
